The Houston Museum of Decorative Arts: A Victorian Treasure, Beautifully Restored
T his spring, the Houston Museum of Decorative Arts returns home to its beautifully restored Victorian residence in the heart of the Bluff View Art District. After a multi-year renovation, visitors will once again step inside a place where history, craftsmanship, and one remarkable woman’s vision come together. At the heart of the museum is the extraordinary personal collection of Anna Safley Houston, an eccentric businesswoman who collected with intention. Over the years, she assem bled an array of European and Amer ican decorative arts, including glass, ceramics, elegant silver, ornate picture frames, delicate miniatures, and finely carved furnishings. Houston believed decorative arts were meant to be lived with and enjoyed. The Victorian home itself serves as a canvas for the collection. The thoughtful renovation illuminates the residence and deepens its sense of place, evoking the refinement of centuries past. Among the most striking features awaiting guests is the presence of a fireplace in nearly every major room. These fireplaces act as architectural anchors, grounding each space with richly ornamented mantels, carved details, and period tilework. Together, they create a rhythm throughout the home and recall a time when the hearth was the symbolic heart of domestic life. Now carefully cleaned and re stored, the fireplaces have reclaimed their prominence. Their ornate designs draw the eye upward, high lighting soaring ceilings and intricate moldings. Original lighting fixtures, with
their delicate metalwork and glass detailing, glow once again with under stated elegance. Rather than replacing them with modern interpretations, the restoration honors their craftsmanship. The home’s banisters and stair railings continue to showcase the artistry of the 19th century. As visitors ascend the staircase, smooth wood and decorative spindles reflect an era when functional elements were designed with flourish and care. Throughout the house, the ren ovation achieves a graceful balance, preserving the ornate beauty of Victo rian design while ensuring structural integrity for generations to come. The effect is seamless. The home feels not merely restored, but awakened. The experience now extends be yond the historic walls with a thought fully designed outdoor space. Nestled among the cultural landmarks of the district, the new courtyard offers a setting for receptions, gatherings, and private events beneath the open sky, where the glow from the museum’s windows reflects the glistening glass against the evening air. This spring, the Houston Museum of Decorative Arts invites visitors to rediscover a Chattanooga treasure. Whether you are drawn by history, architecture, artistry, or simply the pleasure of stepping into another era, the museum offers a unique experience. The newly renovated Houston Museum of Decorative Arts is located
at 201 High St, Chattanooga, TN 37403 in the Bluff View Art District and will reopen late summer of 2026. Check their website for updates. thehoustonmuseum.org
