Nutrition and fi tness have been my biggest passions for decades. Stay ing fi t and healthy is my highest priority and I have been lucky enough to help other people align with their goals too. I’ve been on the road full time for nearly two years and I’m in the best shape of my life. I used to work out in a gym every day, sometimes twice a day. I did spin classes, yoga, CrossFit, you name it, I’ve done it, so I’m surprised to fi ndmyself thriving most when I haven’t been to a proper gym in years. My abs are proof that you can absolutely make fi tness work in this lifestyle, it’s just STAYING FIT onTheRoad By KELLEY WELCH #173565
about knowing how to get it done. S o how do you do that? We’ve been taught to restrict calories and work tirelessly on a treadmill or in a gym to slim down, but sometimes the smallest lifestyle tweaks make the biggest difference. In this lifestyle, diet is everything. You can run your heart out, squat until you can’t squat anymore, but none of it matters if your diet isn’t properly aligned. Luckily for us on the road, there are a lot of options. Here are a few tips to getting your diet in check. Get Local With It Why is it impossible to drive past cows and not yell “COWS!” This happens a lot on the road. There is farmland everywhere and with it comes some pretty fantastic local farmers markets. Farmers markets are a great way to stock up on fresh fruits, veggies and eggs without the added preservatives you fi nd in stores. They’re also a great way to spend an afternoon, so you can feel good about making the right choices while having fun and supporting local business—a win/ win! It’s easier to make smarter purchases when you aren’t overwhelmed by aisles of processed junk.
Limit Eating Out This can be easier said than done, especially for those in smaller rigs without the room to cook, but its crucial. Even if you opt for the “healthier” options when choosing take out or a restaurant, you don’t know the oils they cook with or the quality of the food. It is, without a doubt, always better to make your ownmeals. Focus On Clean Eating and Limit Sugar Diets are a temporary fi x, this is a lifestyle change and needs to be treated as such. It’s about fi nding what works for you and your body. Cleaning up your diet is the fi rst step. Aim for the 80/20 rule: 80% clean eating, 20% “junk.” You’d be surprised just how much of the junk is out there. Here’s a small guide to get you on track Fruits —High in antioxidants and vitamins —berries are your bff. I also love avocados for the healthy fats and adding a good lemon squeeze to my water everyday. Limit tropical fruits and bananas as they are very high in sugar.
