lives today. The unique “Decision Theaters” give visitors the opportunity to weigh in on whether they agree with those decisions. The highlight of this exhibit is the origi- nal “The Buck Stops Here!” sign that he kept on his desk. Some of the interactive exhibits are geared speci ¿ cally for young people. Truman’s hope was that the library would instruct young people about the history of the pres- idency and the government. After leaving the White House, Truman maintained a working of ¿ ce at the library, sometimes even answering the phone himself. The courtyard is the ¿ nal resting place for Truman, his wife Bess, their daughter Margaret and her husband. The archives hold ¿ lm footage, audio recordings and oral histories as well as more than 15 million manu- script pages, over 100,000 photographs and nearly 28,000 museum artifacts preserved and available to researchers. The museum hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day). Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri, only 20 minutes from downtown Kansas City, has been visited by millions of people since its dedication in July 1957. Inside the museum lobby is the colorful 495-square- foot “Independence and the Opening of the West” mural. Visitors can begin their tour by viewing a 15-minute introductory ¿ lm about our 33rd president. The museum includes an exact replica of the Oval Of ¿ ce as it looked in 1950. One exhibit follows Truman from his early years and his military service in World War I through his political career. Another chronicles the years he guided the Unit- ed States through some of the most perilous times in our history—the death of President Roosevelt, the use of the atomic bomb, the end of World War II, the Korean War and the beginning of the Cold War.
