Weight and Safety Tip Tire Weight Limits By Jim Koca #86367, Escapees RVers’ Boot Camp Instructor “When using a tire in either a single or dual application, the less air in the tire, the less weight it will be able to carry.”

One question that I’m always asked is, “How much weight can my tires carry?” The answer is to look at the side wal ls of your tires. T ire manufacturers place the maximum load a tire can

carry at the maximum air pressure on the side walls. You will ¿ nd the maximum load for single-tire and for dual-tire application. Re- member, it is the air pressure in the tire that is carrying the load of the vehicle. For example, let’s look at a tire with the following ratings:

“Max Load Single 4080 lbs @ 110 PSI Cold, or Max Load Dual 3640 lbs @ 110 PSI Cold.” In single-tire applications, it will be able to carry a maximum of 4,080 pounds when it is in À ated to a maximum of 110 pounds, and the air pressure was measured when the tire was cold. In dual tire applications, each tire will be able to carry a maximum of 3,640 pounds, for a total of 7,280 when the tires are in À ated to a maximum of 110 pounds. Again, the air pressure was measured when the tires were cold. Another question that is always asked is, “What is cold?” The air-pressure measurement should be made before the vehicle is driven that day. When using a tire in either a single or dual appli- cation, the less air in the tire, the less weight it will be able to carry. In order for the tires to be in À ated to the proper air pressure for the load they are carrying, each wheel position should be weighed individually. After deter- mining the weight on the tires, you will be able to look at the tire manufacturer’s in À ation tables and ¿ nd the correct air pressure for that speci ¿ c load. Escapees SmartWeigh will provide you with individual wheel weights, and this will allow you to properly in À ate your tires for the loads you are carrying.

Our program provides accurate individual wheel weights for your RV, toad and tow vehicle and it will help you trim the pounds if you need to.
