Heading inland in the afternoon, we made our way to a beautiful temple. It was a work of art. But as our tour ended, the setting sun stole the show. Rays of light flickered across rice fields shelved into the sides of nearby hills like something from a movie. It was simply magical . I’ll never forget it.

task; the suites you will fi nd on page 80 are truly the best of the best and o ff er the most dazzling amenities — think: a salon with walls painted by Jean Baptiste, an in-suite basketball court and a bowling alley, a master bedroom submerged under the sea, and suites that break the $100,000-a-night mark. We’ve categorized the suites based on vacation type, from beach breaks to wellness weekends, and, new this year, we have included our legacy suites — those very special abodes that have featured in Elite Traveler ’s Top 100 Suites for the last fi ve years or longer. Elsewhere in this issue, we answer the question of what to get the person who has everything with our curated gift guide — 10 pages of delightful goodies from hi-tech gadgets to glittering diamond jewelry and the best in booze. In our Explore section, John O’Kelly makes a strong case for Hong Kong: “Though circumstances temporarily eradicated Hong Kong’s viability as a vacation destination, within a day or two of returning visitors will understand just why this city’s o ff ering is world-beating.” Read his in-depth guide on page 148. Emma Al-Mousawi overcomes her water aversion with a voyage to the Galapagos Islands — turn to page 152 for a day-by-day itinerary. So that’s a suite sorted and a potential destination sorted. Now — how to get there? Doug Gollan looks to the skies and delivers the latest in aviation news in our Top Jets feature on page 135. Alexandra Cheney gets behind the wheels of two hypercars — one electric, one internal combustion — to discover their power. More of a seafarer? Miriam Cain looks at classic yachts and their replicas. Or, if you’re looking to get away from it all, our Flight of Fancy on page 168 features a magical experience swimming in a gulf in Costa Rica among glowing bioluminescence.

Object of desire by Samantha Coles

Playing games Unveiled for the fi rst time at Salon Art + Design, a prestigious New York art show held in November, this nostalgic trunk celebrates the traditional board game. Yet less a trunk and more a fully functional game table, the piece, named ‘Game Island Trunk,’ is full of clever compartments and contraptions that house the most beloved games. The sides of the trunk open out to o ff er seating on either side and create a workstation for each player; a chess board has its home atop the workstation. Deeper inside, you’ll fi nd backgammon and Ludo, as well as a hidden tower of Jenga blocks guarded by mini trunks that hold poker chips. The trunk is an impressive display of exemplary craftsmanship — the tangible result of brothers Paritosh and Priyank Mehta’s creativity. The pair founded the Trunks Company, a Jaipur-based brand specializing in handmade, hand-painted trunks created using traditional methods such as the ‘lost-wax technique.’ (It’s a process by which a duplicate sculpture — often a metal, such as silver, gold, brass or bronze — is cast from an original sculpture. Intricate works can be achieved by this method, and the oldest example dates back to 4550–4450 BC.) Many of the Trunks Company’s pieces are bespoke and include such whimsical creations as Timeless Travels with the Taj — a re-imagination of the majestic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in trunk form. Surpassing the power and prowess of supercars, hypercars belong in an even more rarified class of automobile. Their existence elicits questions that often double as exclamatory sentences: How fast is it?! It does what ?! On the following pages, this duo of hypercars — one electric, one internal combustion — redefine boundaries and push possibilities

Pininfarina Battista “It’s better if you start from a full stop,” the engineer in the passenger seat advised. Hands at nine and three, full exhale. “All clear,” the professional Italian race car driver exclaimed into the walkie-talkie. On an undulating road deep in Southern California’s Santa Monica Mountains, experiencing the full expression of the all-electric, 1,900 hp Pininfarina Battista is a breathtaking, cheek-flapping delight. The first time feels unreal. Even after the comprehension of Battista’s one motor for each wheel (which combined allows for a top speed of 217 mph) sets in, digesting a statistic like 0-60 mph in 1.79 seconds is very different than swallowing it in real time. Named for the company’s founder, Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, the hypercar marks the Italian design studio’s first in-house production vehicle in its 93-year history. Although now owned by India’s Mahindra Group, throughout the 20th century Pininfarina continuously collaborated on exterior bodywork and styling with Ferrari (288 GTO), Alfa Romeo (Giulietta Spider) and Maserati (GranTurismo), to name a few. For its namesake debut, the company partnered with Rimac on the carbon-fiber monocoque chassis but its exterior

design styling is proprietary. As is to be expected, Battista exudes an edited, composed set of lines that begin at the U-shaped nose, extend around the exposed carbon-fiber belly and end at the active rear wing. No need for superfluousness here. The all-wheel drive automobile features a double wishbone suspension and semi-active dampers. Without losing power or control, Battista can flick between the five customizable drive modes (in order of intensity: Calma, Pura, Energica, Furiosa or the customizable Carattere). The 120 kWh lithium-ion battery can go from 20% to 80% in 25 minutes (depending on the charger) according to the company. It also touts a 300-mile range, if driven conservatively. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport

There’s driving, and then there’s piloting the 8.0-liter, W16 engine Bugatti Chiron Super Sport. This hypercar requires an extreme amount of cooling — not just because of its 1,578 hp, but because the mid-engine vehicle breathes . Inhalation comes via four, two-stage turbochargers and sequential boost. Exhales occur thanks to a vertically stacked quad tailpipe configuration that, quite unsurprisingly, does not blow fire. With an extended rear and modified front, a downforce-generating diffuser and a hefty amount of air intakes, airholes, side air curtains and drag inducing wings, one can judiciously say the aerodynamics of the Chiron Super Sport are nuanced. Although the brand notes that the new hypercar embraces “both luxury and comfort,” it’s advisable to find an empty highway or back road to test the ludicrous 7,100 max rpm. Perhaps a private track. A mid-morning Friday jaunt through Beverly Hills on Sunset Boulevard, however, proved to be an exercise in patience rather than throttle control. Exemplifying the Bugatti aesthetic, Chiron Super Sport retains its customary center console, complete with spherical buttons and knobs. When the engine evokes visceral reactions, the interior should remain tactile. The traditional swooping C-shape rear exterior language lives on, as does the pinched but

never puckered taillight bar. From $3.825m, bugatti.com

Yachts by Miriam Cain

Modern classics

Whether it’s a restored yacht or a replica, there is something about the way yachts used to be designed in days of yore that remains attractive even to a modern yacht buyer. The enduring appeal of a classic yacht evokes to this day the glamour that yachting held in the Roaring Twenties and into the ’30s. It was during this golden age of capitalism that household names like Astor, Rothschild, Vanderbilt, Woolworth and Morgan threwo ff the shackles of class and aristocracy, and built ever-larger motor yachts on which to spend their summers. For sport, they also built iconic racing yachts to view from aboard these grand dames, primarily during the J Class era from 1929 to 1939, just before World War II. Sadly, only a few of these classic yachts still survive ( Talitha G, Haida, Endeavour and Nahlin being among the most famous). These days, those that survive have generally been lovingly and painstakingly restored and refurbished by their custodians, but more recently a number of replica yachts inspired by the classics have also made their mark on the current fl eet via a combina tion of classic design and modern amenities. Here we take a look at two of the yachts that have drawn inspiration from the elegant vessels of the 1920s and ’30s, and ably demonstrate that it’s not age that makes a classic, but beauty.

The 295.6-ft Nero

NERO With her bright yellow funnel, clipper bow and midnight black hull, the 295.6-ft Nero iswidely considered to be the fi nest new classic a fl oat. Inspired by the iconic lines of the Corsair series of yachts built in the early 20th century by JP Morgan, she marks a perfect crossover between traditional design and modern amenities. Her interior detailing showcases artisanal skills with stunning features such as an Edwardian-style sweeping staircase and a large, handcrafted teak sky lantern, all echoing the nautical designs of her predecessors. Having undergone signi fi cant re fi ts in both 2016 and 2021, Nero features further design and craftsmanship highlights that leave her feeling both contemporary and elegant. Interior designer Laura Pomponi has managed to carefully pay homage to Nero ’s design heritage, but with a fresher, more modern appeal. Her stunning duplex master suite features a large lounge, study, master cabin, his and hers bath rooms, and private access to an observation lounge. A host of superlative amenities include an all-new state-of-the-art gym on the sun deck, where guests can enjoy spectacular views while working out with the quali fi ed personal trainer in the crew. Nero alsoo ff ers her guests a beauty salon for an array of treatments from the crew beautician and masseuse, a resistance pool, a large whirlpool and a wide range of water toys that include a 32-ft custom Corsair tender. Nero is glamour personi fi ed. Nero is available to charter through Burgess Yachts from $497,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests, burgessyachts.com

Ranger has classically styled mahogany

Ranger during a race

RANGER The period between the two world wars is often referred to as the premier decade of superyacht racing. This was the age when the fashion was to have one’s own sail racing team, and yachts like Endeavour , Velsheda and ShamrockV , all three of which survive and still race today, became the ultimate status symbol. Designed in 1934 for the purpose of winning her owner Harold Vanderbilt an America’s Cup, Ranger was another of the 10 J Class yachts built in the 1930s. Unlike the other three original J Class yachts mentioned above, in her original form Ranger no longer exists, but her replica was built in 2003. Alsonamed Ranger , she was the fi rst Super J with the luxurious re fi nement of a bygone era but built to modern standards. These second-generation yachts

are really the reason that there is even such a thing as a J racing scene. Built to strict J Class Association performance rules and recently re fi tted with new technology, Ranger features state-of-the-art navigation, hydraulics and rigging, all of which allow her to carve through the waves at a much faster pace than her ancestor would have. Her classically styled mahogany interior with Art Deco detailing is a true re-creation that is aesthetically almost identical to its forebearer, while boasting all the luxurious comforts expected in a superyacht. Privately owned, Ranger will vie for her position with the J’s at the World Championship, set to take place during the 37th America’s Cup period in2024.

Laurent Gardinier on the modern traveler

Relais & Châteaux president Laurent Gardinier speaks to Kim Ayling about diplomacy, sustainability and the importance of authenticity

Relais & Châteaux’s new president, Laurent Gardinier, is just a few months into the job and he’s already got big plans: “Every day I hear people say ‘Relais & Châteaux is old-fashioned’ — I am here to prove we are not!” We’re talking via video call after a few in-person arrangements were postponed due to travel di ffi culties. He is in his o ffi ce in Paris; I’m at home in London. “Strikes have made it tricky to travel in the UK recently,” I o ff er. “It is a complicated situation,” Gardinier concedes diplomatically. Diplomacy is clearly something he knows a thing or two about: Relais & Châteaux’s leadership is built upon it. Gardinier stepped up to be president in January 2023 following a leadership election, and 17 years on the board. Once a new president is elected, they serve a fi rst termof fi ve years, with the potential to be reelected for a further term — if they do a good job, that is. As with all of the French brand’s presidents, Gardinier is a hotelier himself: The beautiful Domaine Les Crayères in Champagne and the Parisian restaurant Le Taillevent are operated under his watchful eye. “It is so important to have owners as presidents,” he says. “We have to remember that this brand works for its members, not the other way around.” Stepping up for election was not a decision Gardinier took lightly, nor one he took alone. “I’m 56 years old,” he says. “If I didn’t do it now, I wouldn’t do it. I work closely with my two brothers, so we agreed that the work I was doing at my company will be done by them and one more person while I am president. We made the decision as a family, which was very important.” At the top of Gardinier’s list in his new role is bringing this legacy brand to the future. Its name might be proudly displayed by the door of each of its

fi rst, but not our last,” Gardinier is quick to remind me. “We will do them every year now.” He says: “We were very cautious about what sustainability means and [what it means] in di ff erent countries. Of course we look at ener g yuse and plastic use, but we also look at people. Are the people in our community happy? Are we achieving gender equality? We have to look at all of it.” The inaugural report comes on the back of the brand’s 2014 sustainability manifesto, which outlined 20 commitments. “This was just a declaration. Now, we need to action it,” Gardinier says. To create the report, each member was asked to complete a lengthy form, outlining what they do and don’t do in the daily running of their property, with objectives based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals framework. “We were [pleasantly] surprised by how many people responded,” Gardinier says. “It really re fl ects how important sustainability is. It takes a long time to answer — it showed commitment.” The results were promising. Gardinier is especially proud of the company’s diversity: 46% of women are in management positions and 42% in the top ten salaries (although only 5% of executive chefs across the brand are women). But, some gaps presented themselves, and some pretty big goals have been outlined: Single-use plastics will be eliminated by 2025; 100% of properties will manage their green areas to enhance biodiversity (up from 70% in 2021); every member will monitor and reduce water usage by 2025 (up from a small 45% in 2021); and three-quarters of properties will use wholly organic, local, seasonal vegetables by 2030, compared to 2021’s 30%. Then comes the implementation. As Relais & Châteaux is very fi rmly and proudly not a hotel group, and instead an association of independently owned hotels and restaurants, there is no one-size fi ts-all option, nor a universal rollout. Instead, the board needs to be equipped to support each member across the global network. “Our role is to provide sustainability services to headquarters [available to] members in Morocco — who do they call if they want to eliminate single-use plastics? Then we need that for every country.” Eventually, there will be formalized sustainability inspections, Gardinier says. “It’s not to say ‘You are a bad guy’ to members who [aren’t aligned]. It will members. If you want to be serious about sustainability, you need to have a supplier ecosystem. We need to have a service in

member hotels and remains a marker of luxury, but in a world of megabucks conglomerate hospitality groups, staying relevant is essential. Your more well-seasoned friends and family might know the name Relais & Châteaux, but a new generation of traveler is coming over the hill — and if R&C doesn’t get them on board, the future looks worrying. Diversi fi cation plays a key role in Gardinier’s bold ambitions. When it fi rst launched in 1954, Relais & Châteaux was a collection of just eight properties dotted along a route from Paris to Nice, with the slogan La Route du Bonheur — or, ‘The Route to Happiness.’ Now, nearly 70 years later, the brand represents 580 hotels and restaurants in more than 65di ff erent countries. Fortunately for Gardinier, the diversity that the brand needs to prosper already exists — he and his team just need to communicate this with prospective guests. “The essence of Relais & Châteaux is [that] we have a level of quality that is the best in the location of the property,” Gardinier explains. “We don’t impose anything — you won’t be welcomed in the same way in a [Relais & Châteaux hotel] in Japan as you will be at a hacienda in South America, or in a castle in the UK… Each [property] has to be the best in that location, but for us, there is no de fi nitionof luxury. This makes us very di ff erent from the rest. But we need to have a range of properties to suit [all travelers.] We need to ful fi ll thedi ff erent desires of our guests — some want trendy lifestyle [hotels], others want very traditional. I want people to know you can have a lot of di ff erent experiences with Relais & Châteaux.” And then, there’s the key ingredient in Gardinier’s future-proo fi ng recipe: Sustainability. It is a buzzword in the hospitality industry, but one that can’t be brushed away as a trend. In 2022, the brand released its fi rst-ever sustainability report. “It’s our
