Welcome Luxury is all about elevation.

Elite Traveler around the world For daily updates, follow us on Twitter @elite_traveler and on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest @elitetraveler

I recently went on a trip to The Ritz-Carlton, Fari Islands in the Maldives. It’s a brilliant resort, as you’d expect from the brand and the paradisical location, but what really struck me was the little things that make all the di ff erence in the world of luxury. From not having to touch my suitcase from my beachfront villa until I landed back in London to the ‘jogging station’ stacked with ice-cold waters and cool towels, the divinity is in the details.

Luxury is all about elevation. Whether it’s elevating an experience from a good one to a great one, elevating a watch from impressive to outstanding, or elevating a yacht charter from a vacation to a deeply moving adventure. In this issue, our Leaders in Luxury special, we look at the regular Elite Traveler topics and take a deep dive into a particular trend to see which brands are the true innovators in that sphere. Emma Al-Mousawi discovers the wonders of travel as a means for self-improvement; speci fi cally, travel that focuses on education and broadening the mind. John O’Kelly summarizes that there is a lot at stake when distinguishing a good luxe hotel from one that’s exceptional, and one of the big tells is the standard of dining — after all, what’s better than a long lunch or getting better acquainted with the culture through cuisine? O’Kelly looks to the hotels “where magic happens and memories are made.” Going hand in hand with an excellent dining experience is the wine. Kim Ayling explores the role of the sommelier and speaks to those making waves — from pairing fried chicken with champagne to arranging cellars chronologically instead of by region. Within each feature, you’ll see a QR code which, when scanned, will take you to the relevant section on elitetraveler.com. So if Becca Hensley’s in-depth guide to Los Cabos has you itching for more insider information on the hottest places to visit (and the things you can’t miss while you’re there), scan the code and away you go. You’ll also fi nd our regular scheduled programming in our Explore section. Michelle Gross heads to Savannah to check out the newly opened Hotel Bardo — and its restaurant, which is named after the patron saint of hangovers. The Elite Traveler team tackle London and its newest, most impressive suites, from the Peninsula Suite with its 13-person cinema room to the astonishing collection of Damien Hirst artworks and an outdoor ‘lake’ at Claridge’s penthouse. In our Hot List, Emma Al-Mousawi twins safari with sand in an itinerary that takes her to Tanzania. Staying within the continent, this issue’s Flight of Fancy embarks on a full day of heli-biking on Mount Kenya, an extinct volcano and the second-highest peak in Africa (the fi rst being Kilimanjaro). You’ll be dropped at around 13,800 ft, where you will begin your thrilling descent, riding down the mountain and taking in the captivating views.

LEADERS IN LUXURY AVIATION

The innovators

Presented by

As we look to private aviation’s luxury leaders this year, we focus on innovators. It’s a mix of companies, people and products that have and are changing the industry. The year 2024 is the 25th anniversary of the jet card’s invention — a product that has proven itself over the years, though it’s not without skeptics. Then there is Delta Air Lines, whose well-regarded CEO hopes to cap an illustrious career by becoming the fi rstmajor airline to create a large-scale integrated private aviation solution successfully where others have failed. But that’s not all. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) continue to move forward, fl ying you to more places faster, in greater comfort, and with an ever-increasing environmental focus. And then there’s franchising, where one of our innovators hopes to change the charter broker market — but don’t call it McCharter.

JET CARDS

This year marks a quarter century of the jet card. The jet cards — particularly those that o ff er guaranteed availability and fi xed or capped hourly rates — fi ll the ocean-size gaps around chartering fl ights and owning a fractional share of a private jet, or owning your airplane outright. The jet card was invented by Sentient Jet, which is now part of Flexjet; the company was founded in 1999 as eBizJets (short for Executive Business Jets) and the jet card was its product. “Sentient Jet’s journey began 25 years ago with the invention of the jet card — a concept that has rede fi nedhow people fl y privately,” says Andrew Collins, co-CEO at Flexjet and longtime head of Sentient. The early pitch has mostly stayed the same. Sentient’s 2002 website compares the jet card to fractional ownership this way: “As you might imagine (or have experienced), fractional jet ownership is essentially shared ownership of a heavily used asset purchased at a substantial premium. The downsides to this are many: Exorbitant acquisition fees. Hefty monthly maintenance fees. Blackout periods. Long-term contractual commitments. Painful exit fees.” In comparing jet cards to on-demand charter, the Boston-based broker points out that: “One-o ff charter fl ights charge you for empty legs, landing fees, wait times and positioning. Most important, private jet charter lacks the one-way pricing, responsiveness and nationwide reliability of private jet membership.” Skeptics skewer jet card providers that use client funds for future fl ights to pay current expenses, yet there have been relatively few failures. Instead, the model fl ourished, particularly after the 2008 fi nancial crisis, which led to a glut of aircraft available on the charter market. Contrary to common perception, buying private fl ight time in chunks of 25 or 50 hours doesn’t mean you are getting them cheaper than if you booked them one by one —

although, depending on where you are fl ying, the savings versus on-demand charters can be substantial. The bene fi ts of jet cards are multifold. They mostly bridge the wide chasm between ad hoc charter and fractional ownership, which typically requires a fi ve-year commitment and often involves splashing out millions for a share in an airplane. Jet cards are less like a marriage and more like casual dating. If things are going well, you can re-up with your current provider. If not, dozens of companies with eager salespeople now o ff er these memberships. In addition to giving you a fi xed or capped hourly rate so you don’t have to wait for a hard quote each trip, many jet cards include WiFi and de-icing, plus expenses for one-o ff charters. But the big plus is that it’s just easy . Sentient enables instant bookings via text messages, calls, emails, the Sentient Jet app — even by fax. In minutes you have your fl ight con fi rmed. Programs often enable you to choose the aircraft type you want for that fl ight — a light jet for a short hop or a large cabin aircraft for a family vacation. Sentient typically guarantees recovery fl ights at the original price — as opposed to when you charter, which can entail paying additional fees. Crucially, the hourly rates already bake in repositioning so — as Sentient noted on its early website — you can fl y out of and into your favorite airports without extra repositioning charges. Still, Sentient didn’t make this fl ight on its own. Kenny Dichter has been as instrumental as any single fi gure inthe category. In 2001, he founded Marquis Jet Partners after pestering the then-CEO of NetJets, Richard Santulli, who pioneered fractional ownership, into allowing him to sell time on the Berkshire Hathaway-owned fl eet in 25-hour increments. Fractional ownership required a commitment of 50 hours per year and a fi ve-year contract. With the credibility of Warren Bu ff ett behind him, Dichter fl ippedthe script from the way private jets had been sold as a business

tool. Advertising images typically showed executives working diligently on their laptops and conducting meetings. Dichter shifted from the features to the bene fi ts — the leisure lifestyle aspect of private fl ights. A jet card meant getting home in time for your kid’s soccer game, or ensuring the family pet didn’t have to spend your ski vacation at the kennel. Dichter, with his acumen for public relations and celebrity marketing, helped bring attention for the product to an entire sector of the wealthy — ones who valued the convenience of knowing what they would pay and the ability to book a fl ight in minutes, but didn’t fl y enough to make owning a NetJets’ share seem worthwhile. After selling Marquis Jet to NetJets in 2010, he came back with Wheels Up, popularizing memberships on the King Air 350, a turboprop that seats eight passengers and can access smaller airports, once again making private aviation more broadly available and easier to access versus the time consuming process of chartering fl ightby fl ight. Another key fi gure in the jet card scene is VistaJet founder Thomas Flohr. Flohr’s contribution was taking jet cards worldwide, using a record order of ultra-long-range Global private jets from Bombardier to bring what Sentient, Marquis Jet and Wheels Up were doing in the US to the far corners of theworld. Suddenly, there was an alternative to buying a share in a $60m jet, owning one, or worrying about what happens if your charter jet has a mechanical problem in Nairobi. Today, over 80 operators, brokers and hybrids o ff er various versions of the jet card. Kenn Ricci, the chairman of current Sentient owner Flexjet, Inc., says, “The jet card has created a market that previously did not exist and has exposed many new entrants and fi rst-time buyers to our industry. Virtually every private aircraft provider uses some form of the product today.”

SEAMLESS TRAVEL Wouldn’t it be great if you could seamlessly integrate private fl ights and scheduled airlines? Where American Airlines, United Airlines and Lufthansa Group all failed, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian and former board member George Mattson provide an integrated airline-private aviation solution. Mattson took over from Kenny Dichter last September after Delta led a group of investors that contributed $500m when the private fl ight provider Wheels Up hit a fi nancial wall. Bastian says that Wheels Up was “a victim of its own success.” And that scale — over 10,000 members and its position as the fourth-largest operator in the US, the world’s largest market for private jets — made it attractive for the Atlanta based airline. While Covid scuttled initial plans to coordinate e ff orts, with expenses exploding as Delta Wheels Up struggled to integrate multiple acquisitions, it continued to post record revenues into 2023. Now, the goal is to tap into Delta’s roster of over 40,000 corporate accounts to balance out the leisure focus of Wheels Up’s current members. That means putting Delta’s hundreds of corporate salespeople on the job, pitching private aviation. The idea is, you can fl y Wheels Up in the US, fl y Delta One business suites to Europe, Asia or South America, and then travel from there via charter fl ights arranged by broker Air Partner, one of the private fl ight provider’s acquisitions. Mattson said he has had discussions with Delta partners Air France/KLM and Virgin Atlantic Airways about integrating private jet options as well. Of course, American Airlines was a founding partner in Flexjet in the 1990s before selling its interest. United Airlines’s attempt to start a private jet division was scuttled after protests from its unions, and Lufthansa fi nally gave up on its Lufthansa Private Jet project after over adecade. Whether Bastian and Mattson can fi nd success where others have failed, their e ff orts deserve a nod on our list of innovators.

NEWS FROM THE SKIES FRANCHISE Orlando, Florida-based Stratos Jets hopes to do what U. Gary Charlwood did for travel agencies and real estate with Uniglobe and Century 21 — that is, creating a franchising model for private jet charter brokers. In an unveiling earlier this year, Stratos CEO Joel Thomas indicated he wants brokers to do what he says the top ones do best — prospect for new clients and sell. He plans to give them backend support for time-consuming tasks, including bookkeeping, sourcing fl ights, managing trips and tracking payments. Thomas says the model enables his franchisees to tap into the long-term relations Stratos maintains with private jet operators. In March, Gulfstream fi nally earned certi fi cation of its G700 from the Federal Aviation Administration, opening the way for customer deliveries. “The G700 brings a new level of performance and cabin comfort to business aviation and is doing so while meeting the highest certi fi cation standards our industry has ever seen,” said the manufacturer’s president, Mark Burns. The range for the new ultra-long-haul private jets increased from original expectations to 7,750 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 or 6,650 nautical miles at Mach 0.90. Its top operating speed increased from Mach 0.925 to Mach 0.935, making it the fastest in the Gulfstream fl eet. With fi ve distinct living zones, the G700 is a fl ying hotel that can sleep up to 13 passengers. gulfstream.com SUSTAINABILITY Bombardier’s Challenger 650 became the third aircraft class from the Canadian manufacturer to complete an Environmental Product Declaration, alongside its Challenger 3500 and ultra-long-range Globals. “The role of EPDs is not to stamp our aircraft as more sustainable than others — rather, to take ownership of the environmental impact they generate,” said Jean-Christophe Gallagher, executive vice president. The EPD tracks the carbon footprint and sustainability of the airplane itself, its entire lifespan and, critically, the manufacturing process, including the factory and the entire supply chain. That means using sustainably sourced materials, down to the carpets and fl ooring and the wood veneers for cabin walls. bombardier.com stratosaircraft.com FLYING FARTHER

Authentic experiences that encourage your guests to immerse themselves in local culture, discover landmarks and historical sites, or glimpse rural life are all guaranteed to make an indelible mark on their memory. Every cruising ground has a wealth of culture, ranging from natural phenomena to historical acclaim, and a superyacht allows you togoo ff the beaten track to see sides of destinations that few can access. For example, while cruising aboard the Phinisi-style Lamima through the biodiverse waters of Indonesia’s Komodo National Park, guests can get up close to the deserted beaches where wild Komodo dragons forage, or even head ashore with an expert ranger to see them in their natural habitat. While cruising Raja Ampat, take advantage of Lamima ’s PADI diving center and the two experienced Dive Masters on board and explore the underwater world — these waters have the highest recorded marine biodiversity on Earth. “For a truly rewarding experience while navigating these waters aboard Lamima , meet with conservationists and aid them in protecting the manta ray population of this region,” says Gayle Patterson, IMMERSIVE ITINERARIES

director of yachting at Pelorus Yachting. “Alternatively, while cruising the Wayag Archipelago, join conservation rangers in feeding blacktip reef sharks.” New destinations are joining the world cruising map as more and more owners position their yachts in places well beyond the typical cruising grounds of the Mediterranean and Caribbean. One country’s coastline that has become increasingly popular over the past few years is the twin Paci fi c and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica, which is where the motor yacht Kontiki is heading following a stint of adventurous charters on the Paci fi c coast of Ecuador. “A yacht charter along Costa Rica’s rich coast is all about nature and the great outdoors,” says charter broker Holly Hu ff stetler of Edmiston & Company. “Ashore, you can kayak through the jungle and cycle along the palm-fringed coast to discover its amazing wildlife, adrenaline-inducing activities and gorgeous beaches.” Alternatively, head to Ecuador and explore the country with Kontiki ’s experienced local crew. “O ff ering unrivaled access to the natural treasures and heritage of this part of South America, Kontiki ’s crew

includes a guide who works closely with native communities, ensuring the most authentic and sustainable experience possible,” says Hu ff stetler. You don’t have to venture to such far- fl ung cruising grounds to have an authentic experience: The more frequented Mediterranean coastlines o ff er endless opportunities for cultural and natural wonders. While cruising the sun-drenched Greek Islands, charterers can step ashore to explore historic sites; on board, they enjoy the privacy and luxurious amenities a superyacht provides. “With scores of small coves, most of which are only accessible by boat... guests can enjoy peaceful anchorages and water sports with an itinerary interspersed with time ashore discovering ancient sites,” says Popy Kaia, charter director with Fraser Greece. “We have worked closely with O’Ptasia ’s Captain Berdos to put together an exciting itinerary exploring the archaeological wonders of the area, which includes the ancient Greek treasures located in the Cyclades, with secret archaeological and historical sites only known to serious regional experts.”
