We love this design featuring glass, stone and light wood

A sculptural masterpiece, this eclectic bookshelf bridges the gap between art and design. The architectural genius of Italy-based architect and sculptor Livio Ballabio comes to life in the Mondrian Bookcase by Livio Ballabio for AND—Arte nel Design. Ballabio, who has created furniture lines for fashion brands Etro and Roberto Cavalli, is known for using industrial elements such as wood, brass, bronze, glass and leather — and this piece is certainly no exception. The circle-shaped bookcase recalls the De Stijl art movement fromDutch painter Piet Mondrian, who Ballabio is continually inspired by, and fromwhom the piece gets its name. The circular shape represents Artful design

infinity, while the varying geometric shapes evoke different facets of reality. Each square is made from a natural element, and the piece will come with two bronze sculptures in a hollowed space. You can customize your bookshelf; choose from glass, stone and light wood or the darker option of black and brown leather squares situated next to a deeper-hued wood. The unconventionally designed bookshelf’s purpose is twofold: It’s an artistic sculpture and a fully functional piece of furniture. It’s bound to be a statement piece in your home or office. $160,700, artemest.com

The GTC4Lusso T is sporty and versatile with four full adult-capable seats, seven-speed dual clutch and newly launched dual cockpit architecture

by Alexandra Cheney Motoring

RISE OF THE EVERYDAY DRIVERS Ferrari isn’t exactly synonymous with daily drivers; two of its models, though — the GTC4Lusso T and the Portofino — debunk that notion. Deep within Ferrari lore, it is known that the strong-browed, brilliantly coiffed Enzo Ferrari preferred automobiles that transported him to the track over ones that raced on it. Despite the fact that his company cemented its status as the ultimate builder of street-legal race cars, Il Drake personally favored Prancing Horse’s Grand Tourers, like the 250 GT/E or the 330 GT: sports cars meant to be packed with weekenders, golf bags and beach towels, then driven up mountain passes and down to coastal hamlets. Paradoxically enough, a stigma has long trailed Ferrari’s 2+2s. The arrival of the GTC4Lusso T, the FF’s successor and Ferrari’s first V8 turbo-powered four-seater, as well as the Portofino, a stealth roadster that serves as the replacement to the California T (the best-selling vehicle in Ferrari’s 71-year history), could resolutely settle the issue. To test this, Elite Traveler worked the duo of cars through their paces on Southern California’s coast.

GTC4LUSSO T A FAMILY FERRARI

getting used to, as does the engine start/stop button. It can easily rival any F1 wheel in terms of buttons and knobs, but also in pragmatism, as the drive modes option — or manettino — sits on its lower right. Lusso, which means luxury in Italian, flows through the entirety of the GTC4Lusso T, from the improved sound insulation via a 25 percent decrease in climate control system noise to the newly launched dual cockpit architecture — a meaningful investment to ensure the oft-forgotten or absent luxe passenger space is equally as customizable and comfortable as that of the driver. Ferrari directs the GTC4Lusso T to those seeking something “sporty and versatile.” It’s also the lighter, rear-wheel drive, evolved sibling of the GTC4Lusso, a 681-hp, naturally aspirated, all-wheel-drive V12. Removing four cylinders from the front engine drivetrain shifts an impressive amount of the balance rearward, a welcome equilibrium whether you’re diving into corners or accelerating into straightaways. GTC4Lusso T from $256,000, auto.ferrari.com

Santa Monica’s perpetually sandy Bay Street parking lot is enjoyed by local surfers and Chanel location scouts alike, but not a single head turns as I pull in. The burbling arrival of the long, low, glass-roofed GTC4Lusso T, glistening against the late afternoon light, encapsulates the brand’s messaging. Behold a nimble and light shooting-brake coupé with a fastback-esque silhouette that’s also “perfect for driving on a daily basis.” Unquestionably, this Ferrari adapts to its surroundings. Measuring 3.5 inches longer than the 2019 Toyota 4Runner and boasting four full adult-capable seats, the 602-hp turbocharged rear-wheel-drive V8 is undoubtedly enigmatic. Its seven-speed dual clutch can change gears fully automatically, but the paddle shifters are more of a delight than a three-bears-type hindrance (too big, too small, too delicate, too stiff). I find myself purposefully downshifting to enjoy the crisp pop and gurgle, a welcome confirmation of the GTC4Lusso T’s designation within the Prancing Horse moniker. The steering wheel incorporates push-button turn signals, which admittedly take some

First drive: Lamborghini Urus A supercar turned SUV

It’s all a bit familiar. The Lamborghini Urus is the second SUV to hail from the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based company, but its first-ever super-sport utility vehicle. (The LM002 was its military-forward SUV produced from 1986 to 1993.) Culling wide and low design notes, specifically the squat rear silhouette from the Aventador S and the angular roofline of the Countach, the Urus certainly continues the Raging Bull’s architectural bloodline — and that’s before the start button is even deployed. The chassis section and body structure from the front wheels to the windshield is shared, alongside some componentry, with the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, VW Group’s other performance brands. The result is a casual acquaintance. Thundering under the throttle, the 650-hp, eight-speed automatic twin-turbo V8 is aptly named after an extinct bovine; there’s not a shred of fat to be found on this 4,844-lb SUV. Instead, thick thighs and a long, mean snout dictate its sightline. On offer are seven tire variations optimizing track and sand, but it’s not entirely clear which serve all weather conditions. At the Thermal Club, a private track near Palm Springs, California, professional Lamborghini drivers demonstrate what’s

already known. With a top speed of 190 mph, the Urus is fast. More important, though, are the floating-caliper, six-piston, carbon- ceramic brakes in the rear and 10-piston calipers in front. “The Urus goes, but more importantly, it also really stops,” chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani tells me over dinner at La Quinta Resort & Club. The Urus goes from 62 to 0 mph in 111 ft. Inside, the tamburo (drum) is the central interface that activates each of the six drive modes — strada (street), sport, corsa (race), terra (gravel), sabbia (sand) and neve (snow) — as well as the start/stop button ensconced in a dramatic red flip-up switch. The back seat is positively sumptuous, with ample space and dual-screen infotainment systems, while the trunk can hold two golf bags, horizontally positioned, without breaking a sweat. Executives are betting big on the Urus, erecting a new production plant, paint shop and track to accommodate the super SUV. They also hired 600 new employees specifically to build it. “The Urus will double the dimension of the company,” says Alessandro Farmeschi, chief operating officer of Automobili Lamborghini America, adding, “We are selling the wow effect.” Lamborghini Urus from $200,000, lamborghini.com

PORTOFINO AN INSTANT CLASSIC

The scorched earth, the black, burnt chaparral that’s the inevitable aftermath of fire runs from the inland valleys of Los Angeles straight to the Pacific Ocean. Searching for distractions, moments of wonder and awe to deflect the tough times ahead, everyone fromMalibu valets to Santa Barbara firefighters marveled for the solid 14 seconds it took to go from hardtop convertible to multilayered trunk accessory — and that’s without even mentioning that the transition can occur at speeds up to 25 mph. And although the Ferrari Portofino is well-proportioned and sharply angular, it’s still the brilliant hardtop that flat-packs into the trunk that’s the showstopper. The Portofino is one of former Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne’s swan song production cars. The beloved boss, who was responsible for Ferrari’s significant profit and autonomy from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, passed away last summer. At 591 hp, the twin-turbo-charged V8 highlights the features, big and small, that make owning a piece of the Prancing Horse so desirable. Replacing the California T, widely regarded as the first entry-level Ferrari, the Portofino can function as both commuter car and weekend delight. It clocks 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds with 561 lb-ft of torque. Interestingly, though, the engine-management system doesn’t allow all-access in first through third gears. In fact, only in seventh is all the torque available. In auto-shifting mode, the transmission promptly cycles into seventh at every opportunity — call it Maranello-based fuel efficiency. As with the GTC4Lusso T, options abound, including Apple CarPlay ($4,219), Scuderia Ferrari shields on the front fenders ($1,856) and a carbon-fiber cup holder ($2,531). There are 18-way power seats and, in addition to the central 10.2-inch infotainment screen for driver and passenger, there’s a separate 8.8-inch passenger-only screen. Of course, the heart- pumping snarls and snaps courtesy of the quad tail pipes come standard. Portofino from $210,783, auto.ferrari.com

On the Origin The volcanic geology of the Galápagos has captured the imaginations of intrepid travelers since the first recorded visit in 1535. There are restrictions on accessing the islands to protect the endemic flora, fauna and wildlife, but Ecoventura’s MV Origin is the ideal vessel from which to explore. Late last year, Origin became the first expedition yacht in the world to become a member of Relais & Châteaux, a testament to the hospitality, cuisine and amenities on board. The crew includes two naturalist guides who ensure you get the most out of your trip. With only 20 guests on the boat at any one time, you’re immersed in the wilderness of the landscape, uninterrupted. Excursions include guided hikes on volcanic lava, glass-bottomed-boat trips and kayaking amid rare blue-footed boobies, sea lions and finches. If you’re happier watching from the comfort of the boat, large panoramic windows or the extensive sundeck ensure you’re not missing out on any of the action. QUEST TO SVALBARD

In August this year, polar expedition operator PolarQuest will launch an expedition cruise to Svalbard, Norway in the company of multi-award-winning cameraman Doug Allan. The 10-night expedition on board M/S Quest is sure to be an exhilarating and life-affirming journey of discovery. The exact route will be dependent on the ice and weather conditions, but highlights include a trip to the scientific village of Ny-Ålesund in Kongsfjorden, where Amundsen and Nobile started their North Pole expeditions in 1928, and a visit to

the local polar bears and bearded seals’ favorite haunt — the grand fjords of Hornsund. Allan is best known for his work in the polar regions on programs like The Blue Planet , Planet Earth and Frozen Planet . This cruise is a rare opportunity to see some of the most remote areas on the globe with someone who has lived and breathed it for decades. Owner’s cabin from $11,990 for 10 nights. Browse material samples and accessories with guidance from your personal Gulfstream designer

Aviation Home in the sky Outfitting your aircraft can be a daunting and time- consuming challenge. Gulfstream’s new showroom in New York City pairs you with an expert in-house designer who will help effortlessly design the aircraft of your dreams. Designing an aircraft — whether for business or pleasure — is similar to designing a house. Though unlike a home, it’s three-pronged: part residential, part transportation, part corporate; acting as your home or office in the sky. And like a home, it can be painstaking to choose from thousands of design options on your own. That’s why, after the success of its London design showroom, Gulfstream opened a design center in New York’s Midtown Manhattan to bring its no-fuss process to some of the busiest private fliers in the world. The 8,500-sq-ft sales and design center is equipped with thousands of material samples, accessories, seating options and a 20-ft screen that helps map out potential cabin configurations and displays renderings. An expert Gulfstream designer and completions executive (who has designed hundreds of planes) will help you pick between style categories that were created based on their most popular designs. Choosing a design is a very personal decision, and your designer helps customize everything from the exterior color to the seat trim — or choose from pre-set options for cabinetry, furniture, carpet and tableware. Once you select the design, you can configure the layout of your aircraft however you wish, and Gulfstream will suggest options that best suit your travel routine, including where you go, the number of hours flown each year and your typical passenger count. As you go through the process, design elements are rendered on a screen in real time, so you can see exactly what you’re getting and compare options. You’ll take home your design plan and, after just three to five meetings, the design process is complete. by Emma Reynolds

LG’s Signature OLED TV R can be rolled away sleek base or used as a sound bar when no out to full

into a t rolled screen

Technology by Samantha Coles

ROLL WITH IT Those little (or large) black screens are everywhere in our modern lives. A home without a television is a rarity (only 2.6 percent of American homes don’t have a TV) and most of us have multiple sets, along with various other smart devices. An emerging trend at this year’s CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas saw a move away from the omnipresent devices to flexible screens that can be folded, rolled or bent out of sight LG Signature OLED TV R The prototype for LG’s rollable TV was first unveiled at CES in 2016, and now the finished product is about to hit the market for the first time. It has the same components as the prototype, albeit with a few updates such as a 100-watt Dolby Atmos speaker. LG tapped into the fact that some people don’t want their TV to dominate their room, especially if the views are too spectacular to be obstructed. The 65-inch screen quietly and quickly rolls down into a sleek- looking base when you aren’t using it, and can be used at half-mast as a sound bar. LG states that it can be rolled and unrolled up to 50,000 times — that’s twice a day for 34 years. The picture quality isn’t compromised either; it’s a 4K HDR OLED screen, so you can expect crisp viewing with perfect blacks and a wide mix of vivid HDR color. The screen is incredibly thin (a signature of LG’s OLED TVs) at 3mm, so it still looks slick when rolled out at full view. lg.com

Royole FlexPai The world’s first fully flexible smartphone, the Royole FlexPai is a pioneer in this field. Not only was it the only flexible smartphone on display at CES, but it’s the only one currently on the market. It’s actually a smartphone-tablet hybrid; when it is unfolded it has the screen size of a tablet (7.8 inches with full-color flexible display and 1920 x 1440

resolution), but when folded 180 degrees it is smartphone sized, but with three available screens: the primary screen (810 x 1440 resolution) , the secondary screen (720 x 1440 resolution) and the edge screen (390 x 1440). It has two cameras — one with 20 and one with 16 megapixels —and can take photos at very unique angles. The thin OLED screen is incredibly tough and, to prove its

durability, it was folded 200,000 times without a single crack. While it is super cool, it is not without faults, and has been greeted with mixed reviews. It seems more like a pioneering prototype (and if you want to say you’ve got the world’s first bending phone, it’s a winner), which needs a fewminor issues to be straightened (sorry) out. STYLE MEN’S WATCHES

IWC AQUATIMER PERPETUAL CALENDAR DIGITAL DATE- MONTH EDITION “50 YEARS” In celebration of its first dive watch’s 50th anniversary, IWC included a perpetual calendar, flyback chronograph and Ceratanium, a world-first material combining the best aspects of titanium (lightness and durability) with ceramic (hard and scratch-resistant). The perpetual calendar uses apertures to display the day and month, with a subdial at 6 o’clock for leap years. At 12 o’clock, there’s a combined totalizer with hour and minute counters. Rather than a unidirectional bezel, it uses a proprietary SafeDive system with rotating internal and external bezels. The internal bezel only moves when the external bezel is rotated in a counterclockwise direction, ensuring your dive time cannot accidentally be shortened. $46,800, IWC in New York, +1 212 355 7271, iwc.com

DIVE WATCHES Whether you’re diving into the ocean’s depths or just like a sporty look, one thing’s for sure: Your dive watch will spend more time on land than under the sea. After conquering the technical requirements for diving, watchmakers added useful land-based complications like flyback chronographs and calendars, and made them more attractive for everyday wear with decorated and guilloché dials. Here, we round up our favorites, from a watch that will take you 2.5 miles below the earth’s surface (you’ll be dead, but your watch will still work), to a mechanical watch with chiming alarms and a sturdy everyday dive watch.

ULYSSE NARDIN DIVER GREAT WHITE With roots in marine chronometers an deep associations with the sea (its sy m an anchor), dive watches were a natur a progression for Ulysse Nardin. Its new e dive watch, the Diver Chronometer, ha concave, inverted bezel for tracking yo dive time. On the dial, there’s a power reserve at 12 o’clock, and date and sm a seconds at 6 o’clock. The caseback on limited-edition Diver Great White has motif of a great white shark stamped o Should you want an open caseback to admire the in-house movement, there’ s limited-edition Monaco Yacht Show w a as well as classic blue and black versio $8,900, Ulysse Nardin in New York, +1 212 257 4920, ulysse-nardin.com

BREITLING SUPEROCEAN HÉRITAGE II CHRONOGRAPH 44 OUTERKNOWN A historic dive watch, the original Superocean debuted in 1957. In a recent edition, Breitling partnered with surfer Kelly Slater to introduce a first for the brand: a strap made with Econyl yarn from Outerknown (co-founded by Slater himself), which repurposes fishing nets (a large ocean polluter) and recycles them into yarn. The watch is a COSC-certified chronometer with 60-second, 30-minute and 12-hour counters; it also shows the day and date. The black DLC-coated stainless-steel case contrasts nicely with the ocean-blue dial. For legibility underwater, the triangle at 12 o’clock on the bezel has a Super- Luminova-coated dot (the hour and minute hands are coated as well).

OMEGA SEAMASTER PLOPROF 1200M An update of its iconic 1970 dive watch, the new Ploprof (short for plongeur professionnel , meaning “professional diver” in French), doubles its water resistance to 1200m from 600m, but keeps many of the unique technical features from the original timepiece. Its bezel is bidirectional, and it’s locked in place with a security pusher at 2 o’clock, which unusually places the screw-in crown at 9 o’clock (making it especially useful for lefties). At 4 o’clock, there’s a helium escape valve; it has a “sharkproof” bracelet, which is suitable for diving, and it comes with an additional rubber strap. $18,000, Omega in New York, +1 212 207 3333, omegawatches.com

PANERAI GUILLAUME NÉRY

SUBMERSIBLE DIVE WATCH Thanks to its work with the Royal Italian Navy in the 1900s, Panerai is synonymous with the ocean. Its latest dive watch is inspired by champion freediver Guillaume Néry. While most watches use blue or green luminescence, Panerai uses both: The crucial zero minute and the minute hand are blue, and the other markers are green. It has a flyback chronograph with a central second and minute hand (eliminating a minute counter increases legibility) and an hour counter at 3 o’clock. The caseback features Néry’s signature and the depth of his freediving record, a staggering 126m. With a 300m water resistance, this watch could certainly handle his next world record.

BLANCPAIN FIFTY FATHOMS BATHYSCAPHE ANNUAL CALENDAR As the first diving watch ever created, Fifty Fathoms is steeped in heritage. Naturally, it has all of the expected diving requirements, including many that Blancpain created, although its depth limit has increased to 300m from the original 50 fathoms (91m) in 1953. Last year, Blancpain added its first non-diving-related complication, an integrated annual calendar. Apertures show the day of the week, date and month in the new in-house automatic caliber, which is visible through an open caseback. The meteor-gray dial is offset by luminous hour markers, luminescent baton hands and a unidirectional bezel with ceramic insert and dive-scale markers.

ROLEX DEEPSEA D-BLUE DIAL

Deep sea, indeed. This watch is tested to 3,900m, and its dial boasts serious street cred; it was inspired by a custom watch James Cameron wore when he descended to the bottom of the deepest point in Earth's ocean, the Mariana Trench. Specially made Deepsea watches were affixed to the exterior of his submersible, and they returned fully functioning from quite literally the bottom of the ocean. In 2018, Rolex updated the movement, which holds 14 patents, has a date window at 3 o’clock, Chromalight hour markers and hands with blue glow, and a helium safety valve.

BREGUET MARINE ROYALE 5847 One of the most elegant dive watches out there, Breguet’s Marine Royale 5847 is not just another pretty face. It boasts a handy and unusual alarm feature, so you can set the alarm before you dive into the water to remind you to check your air. The beautiful dial features hand-engraved guilloché, and the unidirectional bezel’s numbers are discreetly etched into 18K white gold. The automatic movement has a date window at 6 o’clock, power-reserve indicator at 10 o’clock and alarm window at 12 o’clock (so you know it is activated and you won’t risk it going off during a meeting).
