More than 100 years ago, the hand-held stopwatch was the only method of timing horses in races, or other intervals of time. Then watchmakers found ingenious ways to build the stopwatch into a pocketwatch and then a wristwatch. Today, chronograph watches — timepieces that measure continuous or discontinuous intervals of time — are among the most beloved on the market. One of the most alluring factors about a chronograph is its look: these watches typically have multiple subdials on the main dial, and are often boldly accented with color to offer an energetic appeal. A basic chronograph has an independent sweep seconds hand and typically hour counters (or totalizers) and minute counters. The amount of time a chronograph can track varies depending on the watch. There are several different types of chronographs, and many offer added functions such as altimeters for measuring altitude, tachymeters for measuring speed, and even pulsometers to measure, yes, the number of heartbeats per minute.

The 42mm El Primero Full Open chronograph is equipped with the brand’s famed El Primero caliber 400B, containing 326 individual components and beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour. The movement is semi-skeletonized for added beauty. Crafted in stainless steel and 18K gold, the chronograph features a central seconds hand, 12-hour totalizer and 60-minute totalizer, as well as running seconds in a subdial at 9 o’clock and the date at 6 o’clock. $11,200 Where to buy Tourneau TimeMachine in New York, contact Michael Gordon, boutique director, +1 212 758 7300, zenith-watches.com

The 43mm Manero Flyback in 18K rose gold is perfect for the modern gentleman who loves refined technology. It exudes a classic, pure style, while offering the useful ability to measure consecutive short time intervals with its flyback function, meaning at the end of the start/stop process the chronograph minute and seconds hands fly back to their original position to begin timing again without the need to press a reset button. The Manero Flyback chronograph is powered by the sophisticated CFB 1970 caliber, an automatic movement with a power reserve of 42 hours. $18,000 Where to buy London Jewelers in Manhasset, NY, +1 516 627 7475, carl-f-bucherer.com
