Montblanc’s Augmented Paper brings traditional handwriting into the digital world

Technology

Döttling Gyrowinder The only way to wind your watch is with a grandiose, 360-degree rotating instrument that looks as cool as the watch it winds. The Gyrowinder by Döttling, the manufacturer of bespoke luxury safes, has combined astronomical design with a rare feat of engineering— the Gyrowinder allows for completely free rotation of the watch in all directions, including a complete rollover, and has a set of counterweights so each watch can be individually balanced. The idea for the Gyrowinder came after a trip to Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, when testing a spinning training instrument for aspiring astronauts. This functionality was then integrated into the Gyrowinder. Now all you need is a suitably cool timepiece to keep in it — see our Top Watches of 2017 feature on page 64. $16,000, contact Andreas K Schlittenhardt, managing partner, a.schlittenhardt@doettling.com, +49 703 143 7456, doettling.com

MAKE A NOTE Smart devices have various note-taking functions, but there’s something satisfying about the old fashioned method of putting pen to paper. Montblanc’s latest offering brings the best of both worlds together — the Augmented Paper allows for written notes and sketches to be transferred from paper to a mobile device at the push of a button. The content can be shared, edited and even translated into digital text if your handwriting needs deciphering. You can tag and organize thousands of notes in the Montblanc Hub and the long battery life (up to eight hours of continuous usage and up to a week of regular use) means it’s an excellent travel companion — plus, without the distraction of notifications and emails, you won’t be interrupted. The Augmented Paper comes in an elegant envelope organizer made of black Italian leather. $680, montblanc.com
