BREAKING NEWGROUND Established in 2004 by twin brothers Ian and Richard Abell, London studio Based Upon creates bespoke pieces that tell a story. With a team of creatives that cover fine arts, illustration, sculpture and photography, Based Upon conceives then constructs art and furniture. Works range from large-scale installations and sculptures to personalized artworks that incorporate precious objects and mementoes. Blue Fragmented Crack (above) represents the breaking, colliding and reforming of tectonic plates to create new continents. Each piece is individually cast in bronze and designed to fit perfectly together so the crack becomes one complete form representing reconciliation and reunion. Using casts taken from the walls of cracked clay houses at the source of theWhite Nile, the piece was then developed back in their London studio.
