SOUND VISION

The headphone market is fiercely competitive. Where some brands are built on marketing (or a deal with a pop star), the first headphones from cable company AudioQuest take a different tack, with the focus on innovation. Aiming to limit unwanted vibrations and produce as true a sound as possible, AudioQuest engineers took the reasonable view that headphones are essentially mini speakers strapped to your head and should be built on the same principles as those guiding good speaker design, with the addition of making them more comfortable to wear. NightHawk features such arcane cleverness as drivers with “biocellulose pistonic diaphragms”, a patented split-gap motor to “reduce intermodulation distortion” and a biomimetic grille, inspired by the structure of butterfly wings. And the earcups are formed from a new substance AudiQuest calls “liquid wood”. A sustainable, more pliable substance, it involves mixing wood with reclaimed fiber, heating it, liquefying it and injection molding it. The cables, naturally, are exceptional. Expect a “deeply immersive” experience from a set of cans that look as stunning as they sound. NightHawk will take flight later this year. $TBA, nighthawk.audioquest.com

Chill factor vs. wind chill factor.

With an average temperature of 76 degrees, plus beaches, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing and dolphin encounters, and a convenient airport in the middle of it all, Marathon is a great alternative to where you are now. fla-keys.com/marathon 1.800.262.7284
