Andy Hayler’s Top dish

What does the legendary bar car of the Orient Express have in common with the sleek cabin of Concorde? Both served Louis XIII Grande Champagne Cognac, part of the history of luxury travel. To celebrate its heritage, Louis XIII has teamed up with three luxury French houses to create a limited-edition masterpiece. L’Odyssée d’un Roi consists of four hand-stitched Hermès trunks, each containing a white gold pipette crafted by the silversmith Puiforcat, a crystal decanter and four glasses by Royal Cristallerie Saint-Louis, a special blend of Louis XIII Cognac, as well as a book about Louis XIII’s mythical journeys. More than 50 artisans have spent over 1,000 hours creating these four bespoke creations. Three of the trunks (one will stay in France) will be auctioned to raise money for The Film Foundation, which was set up in 1990, to protect and preserve movies. One bespoke trunk will be sold at Sotheby’s in New York in September, another in Hong Kong in October and the third in London in November. Bidding starts at $100,000, Contact Connor Kriegel, head of auction sales, Sotheby’s, connor.kriegel@sothebys.com PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
