“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” A quote that is often attributed to John Lennon (he used those words in his 1980 song Beautiful Boy ), its origins seem to stretch further back in time, with no definitive person to attribute. But the philosophy still remains — and it is one that, while certainly applicable to the great adventure of life, is also a very apt mantra for travel.

Even the best, most rigorously planned vacations can encounter a few hiccups. Sometimes these hiccups can turn into a wonderful memory — a detour to a new destination, a last-minute flight to somewhere unexpected, or even a spontaneous day trip. This is why it’s all the more important to know you are in the safest of hands when you arrive at your destination, that any last-minute changes can be dealt with. The hotels, resorts and spas within this issue are certainly up to any task. Featuring some of the finest in the world, our expert, in-depth reviews cover slick city hotels in bustling cities (such as Home House, a seriously fun member’s club in London), eco-friendly lodges out in the bush (find andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge in the vast Namib Desert) and serene beachfront abodes (like at the Four Seasons Mauritius). But sometimes, travel plans can be hindered by forces beyond our control — like those caused by Mother Nature. Toby Louch found this out firsthand as he embarked on an exciting voyage to Greenland with Lindblad Expeditions: “In the polar regions, plans change, perhaps due to adverse weather — or maybe there’s something the expedition leader wants to check out. It’s in these moments, when a Lindblad expedition transforms into true exploration, that the drama of travel reveals itself once again.” Elsewhere in this issue, Alex Martin visits The Glenturret Distillery, the oldest working distillery in Scotland, to look at its latest release. Imbibed a bit too much? A visit to bucolic Heckfield Place and its bliss-inducing spa will surely help, as Thea Halstead discovers.

Fjords, waterfalls and fi shing villages

Once upon a time, most of the thrill and drama of travel was a result of visiting destinations that few ever had and, upon returning home, recounting audacious stories of far- fl ung lands. Today the world seems smaller. Travel is simpler, so the whole process can be seen as far less romantic. However, there remain a few companies that still specialize in scratching that itch

Greenland and Iceland. With a population of over 56,000, and a landmass that would stretch from Miami to Montreal, New York and Chicago, Greenland is a vast, empty expanse. Its coastline is scarred by retreating glaciers that have carved hundreds of fjords, many of which Endurance can navigate. Small boats transport passengers to the shore (sometimes having to jump into calf-deep Arctic waters) where they can make their way to land. Lindblad itineraries are a rough guide. In the polar regions, plans change, perhaps due to adverse weather — or maybe there’s something the expedition leader wants to check out. It’s in these moments, when a Lindblad expedition transforms into true exploration, that the drama of travel reveals itself once again.

service dinners, a fully equipped spa, yoga studio and wine tasting. Endurance ’s patented X-Bow is designed to keep sailing relatively smooth. That being said, making regular crossings of the Drake’s Passage — the world’s roughest stretch of sea — there’s bound to be a bit of chop along the way, but it’s all part of the adventure. Andwhile Endurance is certainly lavish, it’s still a serious expedition vessel. On each Lindblad National Geographic expedition, guests are joined by a host of scientists and naturalists who are conducting their own research and are on hand to provide insight to any question. In summer 2023, Lindblad Expeditions conducted several Arctic voyages with Endurance that explored

Lindblad Expeditions knows a thing or two about voyaging on the path least taken. It was Lars-Eric Lindblad who led the fi rst tourist voyage to Antarctica in1966, e ff ectively inventing the concept of expedition travel. Since then, the company has conquered every corner of the globe. While it o ff ers trips to all seven continents, it’s the polar regions where Lindblad truly thrives. Launched in 2021, National Geographic Endurance — named after famed polar explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship — was purpose-built for Arctic and Antarctic exploration. Accommodating 138 guests in 71 cabins, Endurance is capable of transporting travelers to some of the most hard-to-reach spots on Earth, in absolute luxury. Think three-course silver

DAYSEVEN Anchoring o ff Greenland’s southernmost town, Nanortalik, you will explore the settlement with local guides. The afternoon is bookmarked by a performance of local folk music and dance, followed by a lesson in traditional Inuit umiaks and kayaks. DAYEIGHT The highlight of the day is taking in panoramic views as Endurance sails through some of the most beautiful fjords in the world at Prins Christian Sund. Zodiac boats transport passengers to land to tick o ff someextra exploration around icebergs, while underwater cameras chart what’s happening beneath the waves. DAYNINE One of the only days spent at sea, on day nine the ship makes the journey across the Denmark Strait, known by some as the world’s largest waterfall due to the colder water diving as deep as 10,000 ft beneath the warmer currents. This day, crossing back to the Westfjords of Iceland, is a great chance to visit the on-ship spa and listen to some talks from the scientists and naturalists on board. DAYTEN Arrive at the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. One of the most dramatic spots on Iceland’s west coast, this landscape has been crafted by millennia of volcanic activity. Quaint fi shing villages sit next to encapsulating waterfalls, and the unusually shaped Kirkjufell Mountain is one of the most photographed in Iceland. DAYELEVEN Onthe fi nal day of the expedition, the Linbland National Geographic Endurance docks at the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík, the point where the whole journey began. From $13,815 per person. DAYONE Arrive in Reykjavík.Take a trip to the Perlan Natural History Museum, one of Iceland’s most popular attractions, before venturing o ff to explore the sights and sounds of this island’s capital. DAYTWO After a leisurely morning, transfer to the airport for a chartered fl ight to Greenland. Arrive at Greenland’s main airport — situated at the head of the 120-mile long Kangerlussuaq Fjord — and board the Lindblad National Geographic Endurance and begin the voyage. DAYTHREE The fi rst port of call is Nuuk, one of the world’s smallest capital cities. Situated in the shadow of Mount Sermitsiaq, Nuuk has a population of nearly 18,000 and an economy that centers around fi shing. Take a walking tour of this unique destination with one of the locals, before visiting the national museum to discover how Greenland has developed over theyears. DAYFOUR Today, the ship crosses the boundary between western and southern Greenland. Paamiut is a small town that sits at the gateway to the Kuannersooq fjord system. Here, hundreds of fjords and islands dot the landscape, marked by terminal glaciers that stretch out from the Greenland ice sheet. Expect to see incredible wildlife like fi n whales and sea eagles. DAYFIVE The fi fth day is spent at sea as Endurance makes its way down to the Eastern Settlement areas of the Vikings in Greenland. You’ll follow the waterway known as Tunulliar fi k to Brattahlíð, where Erik the Red established a farm in the late 10th century. Here, you will visit replicas of Erik’s Longhouse and see where his son Leif Eriksson launched his fi rst voyage to America. DAYSIX The trip down the fjord continues. The Sissarluttoq World Heritage Center reveals what it must have been like for the Vikings and Inuits who lived on the edge of the ice cap over 1,000 years ago. Stopping at the small city of Qaqortoq — the most populous in southern Greenland — a local guide will show you around before you stop and try some traditional Inuit food.

It’s no secret that flying privately has many advantages, from increased comfort to time efficiency. Private aviation can also make a stressful situation much less so — for example, if you are relocating and need to consider how to bring any four-legged members of the family along. While some airlines do allow pets to travel alongside their owners, the majority are placed in the cargo hold, which is distressing for both pet and owner. That’s where K9 comes in. The punnily named K9 Jets is the world’s first pay-per-seat private charter service — for pets. For around the same price as a first-class ticket, pets and owners can expect ‘VIP’ (Very Important Pets) service. No cages or queues, and the pet will always fly in the cabin with its owner. The K9 Jets team will handle all aspects of the journey, including veterinary certificates and in-flight comfort and safety. Since launching, the company has helped a number of families — including one from Germany that flew with 12 dogs. K9 Jets currently offers routes between London and New Jersey, East and West Coast America, Paris and New Jersey, and New Jersey and Lisbon with prices starting at £7,300 ($8,925), which includes one pet and taxes. Further European routes are set to be included so pets can join you on vacation.

Wine & Spirits by Alex Martin

This image and below The Glenturret Distillery is the oldest working distillery in Scotland; the 2023 Core Release

IN WITH THE OLD There are two types of whisky distillery in Scotland: ones that produce single malt whiskies and ones that don’t. The first, like The Macallan, Glenfiddich and Bowmore, have strong identities and global followings. The latter… don’t. They work quietly in the background, churning out millions of gallons of whisky every year for blends like Johnnie Walker and Chivas Regal. The Glenturret Distillery is making the rare migration from the latter to the former. Existing in some form since 1763, The Glenturret is the oldest working distillery in Scotland. In that time it

straight to work, producing a range of core age statement products from a 10 Year Old to a 30 Year Old in elegantly redesigned decanters. But a distillery with as long a history as The Glenturret naturally had small parcels of high-aged whisky, and it didn’t take long for the first ultra-luxury product to emerge. The Glenturret Trinity is the first ultra-premium series from the distillery. It will, once finished, be formed of three expressions drawn from some of its oldest casks and bottled in specially designed Lalique decanters. Provenance debuted in 2020 and Prowess followed in 2022. Passion will complete the triptych in 2024. There will be just 320 bottles of each, and you’ll only be able to buy them direct from the distillery’s private client division. When a distillery releases whiskies as old as these (Provenance and Prowess are both 33 Year Old age statements), it usually speaks to where it has been, but these point more to where The Glenturret is going. The quality of the decanters, the hand-carved presentation box and the price point (Prowess costs approximately $15,000) suggest an ultimate vision of creating a genuine luxury brand. theglenturret.com

has had numerous owners, with the latest, the Lalique Group, purchasing it from Edrington (owners of The Macallan and Highland Park) in 2019 in a joint venture with Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss. At the time of purchase, The Glenturret was home to the Famous Grouse Experience. It welcomed a lot of visitors, but much of the whisky from its one-and-only still went straight into the Famous Grouse blend. You could buy a Glenturret single malt, but you’d have to go a long way to get it. The Lalique Group obviously saw something special; it appears to have handed over a blank checkbook to develop a brand identity of its own. Lalique’s only previous foray into whisky was creating the decanters for the now much-vaunted Six Pillars series for The Macallan. And there’s no hiding the fact that they’re following the same playbook. First, they brought in Bob Dalgarno as the head whisky maker. Dalgarno had worked in The Macallan cellars for three decades, helping to elevate it to the pinnacle of premium Scotch whisky. He would have been largely familiar with The Glenturret stocks — which, like The Macallan, are largely formed of sherry-seasoned oak casks. He got

AWALK THROUGH THE WOODS

I’m going to take you on a journey, if I may, back in time, to a quieter world, a slower pace of life, to the late 1800s and rural England… I’m taking you to Heck fi eldPlace. Heck fi eld Place is a meticulously restored Georgian country house hotel and has, since its launch in 2018, established itself as one of the best hop-skip-and jump-just-outside London places to stay in the UK. And here, among the 400 acres of ancient oaks and sprawling rhododendrons, is where famed horticulturist and botanist William Walker Wildsmith honed his craft. Wildsmith was the mastermind

ensure that nature and the majesty of Heck fi eld’s grounds are woven throughout. One of the walls of the sauna is made entirely out of glass so while you sweat out the toxins of an evening spent sampling Marle’s wine cellar, you can admire views of ancient oak trees and fi elds of wheat. The 60-ft swimming pool, The Waters, is bathed in natural light. A wall of glass brings nature into the space to create a sopori fi c haven for post-lap snoozes and a few chapters of your book. It’s chlorine-free, too, so no chemicals to wash o ff before you head back up to your room. Everything seems generous at The Bothy

behind the progressive gardens and arboretum — during his stewardship, he and his team traveled all over the world hunting down interesting trees to bring home and introduce to the grounds. So important was Wildsmith’s in fl uence on Heck fi ed that the botanical skincare range is named after him and, more recently, the new spa has taken his moniker. The Bothy by Wildsmith is a true sanctuary that brings Wildsmith’s ethos of the healing power of nature to life. From the fossilized stone, Fibonacci staircase, birdsong soundtrack and the products used in treatments, huge consideration has been made to

SHINRIN YOKU

The practice of forest bathing seems like an ancient one, conjuring visions of druids celebrating the summer solstice or worshiping the Green Man. And though the bene fi ts of fresh air and proximity to nature certainly aren’t anything new, forest bathing o ffi cially only became a practice established in the zeitgeist in 1980s Japan, seen as the perfect antidote for modern living. This prompted a slew of scienti fi c studies and research, which all reinforced what has long been assumed — engul fi ng yourself in nature is good for the soul. I took to the 400-acre forests surrounding Heck fi eld Place with the in-house mindfulness teacher, Benjamin, who guides the forest therapy sessions. His goal for our session is to amplify the power of being immersed in the forest with some mindfulness practices. We meet by the fl oating forest at the entrance to The Bothy; then we head out and pause at the foot of a giant redwood. Standing at the base of this huge, 165-year-old sequoia (brought over by Wildsmith) is the ideal place to start: Nothing reminds you of the sheer might of nature better than a tree of this size. Through breathing exercises, guided meditation and opening up all my senses to the forest, I was quickly brought to a feeling of calm and peace. Benjamin encourages me, with closed eyes, to listen to the sound of the birds in the trees, the wind humming through their branches. The sounds of nature are received di ff erently by the brain so the sound of the forest triggers balance and relaxation. As I inhale deeply, I breathe in the abundance of essential oils that are naturally released into the air by the trees. These oils are proven to decrease blood pressure, reduce cortisone levels and encourage white blood cells to regenerate. The multi-sensory calmness lasts long after I’ve fi nished the session.

Clockwise from opposite Heck fi eld Place; the 60-ft swimming pool, The Waters; sauna at The Bothy spa

The Bothy is also home to a program of carefully considered movement classes. Desperately dodging the cold water immersion, I experienced 90 minutes of shinrin-yoku , otherwise known as forest bathing. The whole experience at The Bothy leaves me feeling lighter. And that’s down to the ethos of The Bothy that mirrors that of Heck fi eld itself. Time works di ff erently here. It is slow, it is important, and it reconnects you to the healing power of nature. From $380 per night. Contact enquiries@heck fi eldplace.com, +44 118 932 6868, bothy.heck fi eldplace.com

— the lounge chairs are huge; the treatment times are long; the pace is relaxed and unhurried. The Oak Terrace is home to an alfresco hydrotherapy pool plus a plunge bucket of ice-cold water — I didn’t have the courage nor the inclination to pull the string and allow myself to be awoken from my calm, warm state of relaxation, but it’s there if you’ve got the mettle. There are six treatment rooms, all found in the subterranean part of The Bothy. Treatments range from the expected (facials and full body massages), to the unexpected (myofascial release and naturopathy).

Dine When Lebanase-Canadian entrepreneur Charles Khabouth opened Byblos on Miami Beach in 2015, it became an instant hit among locals and tourists alike. Inside, the decor is distinctive — cobalt blue sofas, huge Egyptian murals, octopus sculptures and dangling chandeliers. The cuisine is traditional Mediterranean meze-style dishes injected with a dose of Miami, like the Middle Eastern fried chicken with tahini, za’atar and hot sauce. While there is no strict dress code for Byblos, this is Miami so dress to impress. byblosmiami.com

Beachy keen No matter the time of year, Miami’s golden beaches and endless sunshine beckon. The most famous is South Beach (or SoBe, as locals say) on the southern tip of Miami Beach. Stretching for miles, it’s known for its beautiful scenery and equally beautiful people, Art Deco architecture, trendy bars, restaurants and hotels. For a quieter pace, head to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne. It’s one of the city’s more secluded beaches and has peaceful, uncrowded shores overlooked by a soaring lighthouse. Wherever you choose to soak up the sun, keeping your skin hydrated and protected is a must. Clinique’s new Moisture Surge SPF25 Sheer Hydrator has an opaque fi nish so you can see exactly where it is being applied (it’s worth noting that as the SPF is 25, you’ll need to reapply frequently if spending prolonged periods in the sun). It has a light, weightless feel and just like the sister product, the surge moisturizer (a personal favorite), it keeps skin looking juicy and fresh. Artscene Miami is an exciting hub for contemporary art and attracts artists and collectors from near and far. In

And perhaps the most notable art event is Art Basel Miami Beach which happens every December. The fair celebrates both established and emerging artists and showcases an incredible array of artwork. Come for the art but stay for the parties — Art Basel after parties are legendary, and the dress code is uber-glam and uber-cool. Opt for a Proenza Schouler cutout sequined knitted maxi dress paired with bright and ever-so-fun crystal embellished mules by Amina Muaddi.

The Wynwood Arts District was once a severely neglected industrial neighborhood that has now been transformed into a dynamic artistic enclave with colorful street art, galleries and creative spaces.
