@ELITETRAVELER AROUND THEWORLD The Elite Traveler team has been enjoying staycations and further-flung destinations, as well as looking behind-the-scenes at the creation of autombiles and yachts. This time last year, our Fall issue’s welcome letter began with the fatefully optimistic words: “As the world begins to ease out of lockdown…” Who’d have thought we’d be in a similar position some 12 months later. Oh, to have a precedented time again! While we’ve been aching for life to return to ‘normal,’ it is now clear that there is no such thing. But, to quote Morticia
Addams, what is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly... This summer, I stepped onto an airplane for the first time in two years — something that used to be a monthly (give or take) occurrence that I certainly took for granted. Although visiting Sir Richard Branson’s serene private abode, Necker Island (now reopened with a number of sustainable updates after hurricanes and fires nearly leveled it; see pg 132), was worth every single Covid-19 test. It is normal to feel overwhelmed (as I did) now that travel, and indeed the world as we know it, has changed so much. If you are one of the many who still feels apprehensive about long-distance travel, look closer to home and cruise the open roads. Alexandra Cheney takes a Bentley Continental GT on winding roads through Arizona on pg 128, admiring the beautiful red-rock landscape and taking dips in natural pools along the way. Prefer the cold? Becca Hensley heads to glamorous Aspen on pg 124 to see all the wonderful things you can do on and off the slopes. Our resident timepiece editor and human horological encyclopedia, Roberta Naas, has once again compiled our Top Watches feature. Now in its fifth year, the extremely selective list has a brand new criteria based on what you — our readers — want to see on the pages. A new minimum price of $20,000 and only those released in the last year have made the cut. This magnificent curation looks at the skilled craftsmanship and meticulous, painstaking attention to detail that goes into every single piece. Elsewhere in this issue, Doug Gollan checks out the latest model from Cirrus, Luke Abrahams takes us on a style journey to Positano, Italy, and Sophie Killip speaks to renowned interior designer Stephen Sills. We round off our Fall issue with an absurdly romantic dinner in the middle of the ocean, just off Turtle Island in Fiji. Samantha Coles Editor samantha.coles@elitetraveler.com
Samantha Coles makes some new friends on Necker Island. The curious lemurs can often be found scurrying around the private island’s tennis courts.
Kim Ayling soaks up the dreamy nautical views at The Idle Rocks, Cornwall. The boutique hotel is in the traditional (and charming) fishing village of St Mawes.
Sophie Killip makes the most of the end of summer at The Goring, London with some succulent lobster and champagne. We’ll drink to that.
Alex Martin has the yacht of his dreams created by superyacht design studio Harrison Eidsgaard. Her name? Alba, after his baby daughter.
What better way to check out a new hotel than with a bubble bath and a glass of wine? Samantha Coles visits Mayfair’s latest opening, The Biltmore.
Kim Ayling visits the Bentley factory in Cheshire, England to witness the unveiling of the latest model, the Flying Spur Hybrid Odyssean Edition.

Whether you’re buying a superyacht or searching for the ideal vessel for a charter vacation, it’s expected — and understandable — that much of your attention will be focused on the water. If you’re seeking a sanctuary for rest and relaxation, your focus need not go any further than that. If, however, you harbor an adventurous spirit and wish to journey down the off-beaten path, an expedition (or explorer) yacht with a land-roving vehicle is a must. When Perini Navi was commissioned to build the 164-ft explorer yacht, Exuma , more than a decade ago, special attention was paid to the yacht’s ability to sail through shallow, unchartered waters, as well as its minimal impact on the environment. The modern vessel — both in age and aesthetics — has earned the Rina Green Plus Award for the achievements of its eco-friendly design. Additionally, the yacht, which can comfortably accommodate 11 guests (with seven crew members), has sailed the world’s oceans since its launch and, thanks to an amphibious, off-road vehicle as part of its fleet of toys and tenders, the yacht has allowed its owner to even more extensively experience and explore the world’s less-inhabited regions. In fact, when Exuma was presented for sale by Fraser yachts in Monaco in September 2020, the owner addressed that specific amenity and the opportunities that it has presented. “I felt the need to have an explorer boat with an amphibious vehicle. This was absolutely essential,” he said. “Some people don’t realize how useful it is. We can use it in any country, including difficult places like Papua New Guinea. All these islands where there were no rental cars or taxis, we could just drop it into the water, climb the beach and tour the island.” Prospective world explorers who wish to sail — and drive — across remote areas of the world, just as Exuma ’s original owner has done, can do so by purchasing the 11-year-old vessel for €16.9 million (about $19.9 million). On the charter side, Ragnar , an expedition vessel available for weekly charters at €525,000 (about $623,000) by Burgess Yachts, delivers everything the intrepid, modern-day world explorer is seeking. Equipped to traverse arctic waters and boasting a range of 6,000 nautical miles, the 223-ft vessel, which was built in 2012 and refitted in 2020, can bring 12 guests (and 17 crew members) to the most far-flung regions of the world. It’s also equipped with an amphibious ATV, which allows guests to venture even farther afield. Not surprisingly, when the yacht emerged from Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts after a rebuild last summer, its captain immediately set the vessel on a course for Iceland. According to Chris Gregory, a London-based charter broker for Burgess Yachts, more vessels like Exuma and Ragnar are likely to offer similar amphibious and off-road tenders in the future. “The popularity of adventure charters is ever increasing, with more people wanting to go further afield,” he says. “With new destinations opening such as the Red Sea, we expect the need and want for such vehicles to increase. If you think about the Middle East with possibilities of dune bashing and desert safaris — an off-road vehicle would be a perfect addition to a yacht’s toy box.” fraseryachts.com; burgessyachts.com While many expedition yachts are sailing the world’s oceans, not all are created equal. As two leading vessels prove, the freedom of exploration requires a tender garage equipped with an amphibious, off-road vehicle.

Vision Jet G2+ The third edition of Cirrus Aircraft’s popular, very light jet was unveiled this summer
ONE VISION
There are basically three things you need to know about the third edition of Cirrus Aircraft’s popular very light jet. Unveiled this summer, the Vision Jet G2+ can take off frommore airports; it can do so with a higher takeoff weight; and, while its panoramic windows will entice you away from your digital devices, you can now stay connected with Gogo Business Aviation internet. An update of itsWilliams FJ33-5A engines means shorter runways for takeoff. That adds convenient airports in Santa Monica, California andWings Field outside Philadelphia. It also means there are no longer seasonal weight constraints when flying out of Aspen (see pg 124 for our guide to the swish town) or those hot days at Las Vegas Henderson Executive Airport. In fact, executives say to think of runways at 4,000 ft, and up to 500 lbs more payload for people, pets, baggage...whatever you need. The Vision Jet’s popularity with owners, pilots and passengers has always been due to its flexibility. There are multiple cabin configurations that can easily be switched out by the pilot on a flight-by-flight basis. Owners say the feature
makes it ideal for fishing and skiing trips on the weekend, then flying the corporate team to the week’s meetings on Monday. The single-pilot small jet can seat up to seven. And while owners and pilots are often one and the same, that’s changing as well. Cirrus’ VisionAir Owner management program offering includes an on-demand professional pilot, concierge service, complete maintenance coverage, aircraft management oversight and storage, as well as options for insurance coverage and referrals for professional tax advice. There are currently more than 245 Vision Jets in service. According to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, it has been the most delivered private jet over the past three years. The G2+ is priced at $2.98m 'fully loaded.' That’s a bit more than the $2.85m price tag for the G2 and up from the original, which cost $1.96m. Of course, the Vision Jet is unique with both its emergency parachute, a feature that’s been used over 100 times, and Safe Return Emergency Autoland. The latter enables the aircraft to be landed by autopilot at the nearest suitable airport
with a touch of a button, located for easy use by passengers should the pilot become incapacitated. If you want to get a good look at the G2+, Cirrus has scheduled static displays this fall at airports inWestchester County (north of New York City); Nashville; Las Vegas; Sanford, North Carolina; and Scottsdale, Arizona. If you’re already an owner, there are opportunities for bothWiFi and engine upgrades, Cirrus executives tell Elite Traveler . The Vision Jet is likely to be more readily available on the charter market in the future. Florida-based Verijet is expanding its fleet nationally — and eventually to Europe. It offers a fixed rate of $3,000 per hour and an option to have a second pilot. Jet card broker OneFlight International includes the Vision Jet in its fixed-rate, guaranteed availability membership program. cirrusaircraft.com Doug Gollan is founder and editor-in-chief of the private aviation solutions buyer’s guide, privatejetcardcomparisons.com

Château de Berne’s winemaker starts harvesting grapes at midnight and presses them immediately to keep the pale color
Wine by Elin McCoy
ON THE ROSÉ ROAD AGAIN
Wine tourism is back, and one of the most pleasurable regions in which to indulge grape- driven passion is sun-drenched (even in fall), movie-set-beautiful Provence, home to the world’s most fashionable rosés. More grand wine estates than ever are wooing oenophiles with luxury lodging, pools, spas and expert-led tastings. Château de Berne, about an hour’s drive from the buzzy beach clubs of Saint-Tropez, is a trailblazer of the trend, with a serious eco-conscious twist behind its excellent wines. Think of the bucolic 1,700-acre historic estate in the large Côtes de Provence appellation as a sustainable Shangri-La. The château’s gourmet restaurant, Le Jardin de
Berne, is one of a small number of Michelin 1-star restaurants in France to earn the Guide’s new Etoile Verte (green star) award for sustainable gastronomy. Executive chef Louis Rameau draws from a 30,000-sq-ft organic fruit and vegetable garden to create his seasonal, local-flavors-of-Provence cuisine. The château’s savory rosés, as well as rarer estate reds, whites and sparkling wines, come from vineyards that were certified organic in February 2018. The tile-roofed Relais & Châteaux hotel is one of only three five-star spots in France to earn European Ecolabel certification, which reflects its commitment to conserving energy and water, and reducing waste. 1. 2020 CHÂTEAU DE BERNE INSPIRATION ROSÉ This intensely pink wine in a square-shaped, clear bottle is an archetypal Côtes de Provence rosé, with floral aromas, zingy acidity, a silky texture, and bright herbal, mineral and strawberry flavor notes. It’s a savory blend of grenache (for spice and body), cinsault (for freshness, delicacy, fruitiness) and syrah (for richness). Approx. $46 for a magnum, chateaudeberne.com The tall, embossed transparent glass bottles are stylishly chic, but are surprisingly heavy, given the estate’s sustainability aims. Still, the sophisticated, pale pink wine inside is raspberry-scented and spicy. For great party pictures, the big 3-liter and 6-liter bottles are wonderfully Instagrammable. Approx. $57 for a magnum, ultimateprovence.com 2. 2020 ULTIMATE PROVENCE ROSÉ
Clockwise from left Château de Berne’s bucolic landscape; the château’s serene spa; cuisine uses ingredients from an organic garden; many of the château’s wines are certified organic
and revamped three other local estates, each with a unique vibe, to promote his sustainable luxury vision. Closer to Saint-Tropez, for example, is Ultimate Provence, which opened in 2019. The sleek rooms have an edgy, millennial tone, and inventive rosé cocktails are served on the trendy rooftop terrace. All the properties have certified organic vineyards, as do some 24% of those in Provence — more than any other French region. That, Château de Berne and rosé are all reasons enough for jumping on a plane and heading to Provence. Suite from $1,360 per night. Contact info@chateauberne.com, +33 494 604 360, chateauberne.com
cars. The château’s limestone hills and forests, rich in biodiversity, include miles of trails to hike and bike when you’re not exploring the vineyards, tasting wine in the cellar with an expert sommelier, or sipping the estate’s several rosés. Fresh, light, crisp, dry and mouthwatering, pale pink wines account for about 90% of the wine produced in the appellation. Château de Berne’s winemaker starts harvesting grapes at midnight and presses them immediately to retain the pale color. Traditionally, Provence rosés are blends of several grapes, including grenache, cinsault and syrah. British billionaire Mark Dixon bought Château de Berne in 2007, and since then he’s also snapped up

Face time
Heard of wearing your heart on your sleeve? What about your lips on your finger? Or nose on your neck? A year of wearing face masks has inspired designers to find new ways to display your facial features, each with an eccentric — yet elegant — twist. Schiaparelli artistic director Daniel Roseberry’s spring/summer 2021 jewelry collection paid homage to the Maison’s historic love for the surreal and iconic trompe l’oeil emblems with exalted nose earrings and necklaces, whereas Los Angeles-based designer Rosanne Karmes of Sydney Evan (named after her two children, Sydney and Evan) is never far from fun, whimsical styles, like her ruby lip ring. Elsewhere, waist-up dressing is having a revival in the Zoom age, and it’s a boon for jewelry designers. Not only has the pandemic refocused adornment at center stage, but also engendered a subconscious wave of self-care and personal conservation, too. The Evil Eye talisman — a symbol of protection against evil forces — has been given a contemporary update by Suzanne Kalan in diamond, emerald and 18k yellow gold, while Jessie V E’s chunky 18k gold Keep Safe pendant can be worn for years to come and passed from generation to generation.

THE BOLD TYPE
Opting for initialed jewelry is as easy as A-B-C; it’s deciding which letter to get that’s the hard part. While there’s nothing new about initials, or personalized jewelry, (signet rings have been used to mark and ‘sign’ documents going back as far as ancient Egypt), a selection of jewelry designers reinventing traditional heirloom styles has ushered in a new era of initial pieces that aren’t just limited to rings. Feels a bit narcissistic? You don’t even have to wear your own initial — like the Duchess of Cambridge, who often wears a gold pendant that bears the initials of her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, or the Duchess of Sussex, who wore a delicate necklace with the initial ‘A’ in tribute to her son Archie to Wimbledon in 2019. Whether the letter is for self-love or sentimental value, there are endless shapes, styles and even fonts to choose from. Go big and bold with Pacheree and Roberto Coin’s eye-catching architectural pendants, or stick to stacking with a

single initial on each Nouvel Heritage bangle. Elsewhere, Roxanne Assoulin’s fun, stackable enamel bracelets have been on fashion editors’ wrists for years, and for good reason.

The legendary Franco’s Bar is the place to see and be seen
Dramatic, dreamy and oh-so-deluxe, Positano is the Amalfi Coast’s front-cover star. Seductive and beautiful, vast cloud-capped mountains plunge into the sparkling sea in heartstring-pulling panoramas flecked by sheer-drop crags, colorful houses and verdant woodlands. No less Instagram worthy are its steep streets and steps, flanked by wisteria- and bougainvillea-draped hotels, decadent restaurants and the most fashion-conscious boutiques ready to dress starlets in quintessential classics. From its black-sand shores to the narrow lanes that wind their way down the precipice, you can pick up handcrafted pieces from indie ‘Moda di Positano’ designers, browse the showy shopfronts and relish in a quartet of fashion steals worshipped by the glitterati set. The style The one-stop-shop for the most stylish Positano fashion is, without any competition, Emporio Sirenuse. Perched just opposite its namesake hotel Le Sirenuse, it’s where you’ll find quirky, off-the-wall boutique chic designed in collaboration with some of the finest out there, from Emilia Wickstead to Luke Edward Hall. And for those who take their swimwear very seriously, Allegra Hicks. Looks are “a romantic take on the spirit of the Amalfi coast,” says founder Carla Sersale, whose lookbook is best described as easy-breezy, summer-ready style. Dresses are romantically flowy, crafted from the finest breathable cotton (a godsend come August), linen and silks that the master indie-loving collaborator can get her hands on. Must-buys? Our personal in-store curated edit from Carla goes to the Bella Spring Flowers-print cotton midi dress — wear for days spent on the cliffs; Nerano shorts for lazy afternoons spent on the beach; and for when a night on the town beckons, the stunning Sophia dress made to keep all who wear it cool and supremely elegant. For the guys, a linen shirt from this outpost will make sure you stand out from the rest. Local crafts When it comes to taking a slice of Positano home, look no further than its excellent ceramic shops. One of the best is Ceramiche Maria Grazia. Browse a sumptuous display of locally produced ceramics that are more or less guaranteed to cause a stir at your next dinner party. The colors and designs are subtle and classy, with lots of Amalfi lemons emblazoned onto urns, plates, tables and even cutesy egg cups. Viale Pasitea 8, +39 089 812 3481

The must-have You might think it strange we dedicate an entire slot to the humble sandal, but know this: Positano is famous the world over for its handmade flops; so famous, in fact, that many of the artisanal shops scattered through the town’s labyrinthine valleys will make them for you while you wait. Try La Botteguccia de Giovanni. Leather sandals are handmade by craftsman Giovanni in his small workroom at the back of the shop. All you must do is choose a color and any decorative flourishes you want (shells are always in fashion), tell him your size and then nip round the corner for an espresso while he makes your shoes. The late Jackie Onassis was a big fan, too. Custom-made There’s no question that the place to enjoy a drink in Positano comes courtesy of the now legendary Franco’s Bar, perched on top of the equally legendary Le Sirenuse Hotel. Expect cocktails and oysters galore, served alongside breathtaking views of the coast and the town itself. Best time to visit? Pre-sunset to watch the skies turn a mesmerizing gold. After, throw on your finest attire for dinner at La Sponda, the hotel’s magnificent bougainvillea-flecked restaurant that looks out onto the sea. The mood is wildly romantic. Think 400 glowing candles and a trio of musicians who serenade you with guitars and mandolins as you feast on excellent pasta spun with local lobster, mouthwateringly tender slabs of veal and incredible desserts. It’s a Positano experience not to be missed. sirenuse.it sandals go for about $130. labottegucciapositano.it Where to be seen
