Welcome

It’s not by chance that our Top Watches issue coincides with the changing of the seasons. The topic of time — how it passes, how much we have left, what to do with it — is at the forefront of our minds as we notice summer drifting away and fall creeping in. Roberta Naas, Elite Traveler ’s contributing timepiece editor andbona fi de watch guru, has selected the most

Elite Traveler around the world For daily updates, follow us on Twitter @elite_traveler and on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest @elitetraveler

extraordinary new releases for this eighth year of Top Watches. Almost every year since our Top Watches feature began in 2017, we have presented 50 watches (except during the height of the pandemic when watch production slowed). This year, we have scrapped the 50 rule — as Naas succinctly puts it, “Why, after all, should there be 50 watches in the lineup if 50 watches don’t fi t the bill?” By including fewer watches, it means the criteria for inclusion is evenmore stringent than ever before. To make the cut, every timepiece must retail for a minimum of $20,000; the watches must have been introduced in 2024; and selected timepieces must be new and di ff erent when it comes to display, indications, functions, technology and aesthetics. The resulting list sees some of the most complex three-dimensional and classic watches, head-turning feats of high jewelry and incredible world fi rsts. From haute horology to haute perfumery, Naas also visits Henry Jacques’ laboratory in the South of France and reveals how the brand creates its gorgeous elixirs. Elsewhere in our In fl uence section, Alex Martin takes a closer look at Patek Philippe’s reimagining of its mid-century classic Golden Ellipse with a bracelet as fascinating and intricate as its movement. Also in our In fl uence section, Kim Ayling chats to CEO and founder of Tully Luxury Travel, Mary Jean Tully, about her vast travel experiences and the place that she returns to again and again (despite visiting over 120 countries). I sat down at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands to speak to ocean-exploring legend Jean-Michel Cousteau before taking a dive into the Indian Ocean, where we spotted a turtle. Michael Teo Van Runkle gets behind the wheel (in one case, behind the handlebars) of the latest and greatest new releases in the motoring world — including the fi rsthybrid Bugatti and the Lucid Air Sapphire, which can reach a hair-raising top speed of 205 mph. In our Explore section, Becca Hensley looks at the fi nest suites on the high seas and Michelle Gross is seduced by island life on Turks and Caicos. Emma Al-Mousawi heads out on an incredible journey to Panama, while Fiona Sims heads to the Azores for a culinary-focused escape. As ever, we close out this issue with our Flight of Fancy — VistaJet has partnered with Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea to launch A Way fi nder’s Journey for a spectacular evening under the stars.

Travel writer Fiona Sims’ specialties span a broad range of topics, but it’s the culinary world where she really gets her teeth into a story. In this issue, Sims takes us to the Azores — a mountainous collection of islands some 870 miles o ff the coast of Portugal — for a deep dive into the archipelago’s rich culinary scene, and the chefs, producers and purveyors putting it on the world stage. As she writes on page 132, the Azores’ “nutrient-rich volcanic soil gives a distinct terroir to the food produced here, from the highly prized beef, to the dialed-up flavors of the fruit and vegetables.” ‘Home’ to Sims is between the Isle of Wight and London. Object of desire By Samantha Coles

This image A limited-edition collectible chest and a sculptural bottle Below Daniel Arsham’s avant-garde relief was inspired by a stained-glass panel at

the champagne house’s cellars

To mark Moët & Chandon’s 280th anniversary, the house has released Collection Impériale Création No. 1. (In the countdown to its 300th anniversary, Moët is releasing a new creation every two years.) This is the fi rst release from the Collection Impériale; the new cuvée is a blend of three grape varieties from seven remarkable vintages — the 2013 Grand Vintage (aged in stainless steel tanks), along with the 2012, 2010, 2008, 2006, 2000, all aged in oak casks, and fi nished with the 2004, bottle aged on lees in 2015 after its second fermentation. The golden-hued champagne has mineral dry notes such as licorice root and mocha, with secondary aromas of fresh hazelnut, vanilla, and a touch of dried fi g and Mirabelle plum. To celebrate the release, the house has

partnered with American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham. His curious work explores themes of architecture and the passage of time, both of which are evident in the piece he created for Moët — an avant-garde relief that was unveiled at the champagne house in Epernay. The striking piece was inspired by a stained glass panel by Félix Gaudin that has been within the house’s cellars since 1890. Just shy of 10-ft long, the artwork, which was fashioned from a white cast resin that recalls the chalky soils of the Champagne region, will be a permanent fi xture in the cellars — mounted not far from the original stained-glass window. Alongside the artwork, Arsham also created a limited-edition collectible chest and a sculptural bottle. Limited to just 85 pieces, the 3D bottles

emulate the artwork, with references to the Château de Saran, which Moët & Chandon has owned since 1801. $28,000, moet.com

Following a notoriously turbulent year, Wheels Up has revamped its product portfolio in a bid to make access to private aviation simpler than ever and boost its membership numbers. Offering new options for both members and pay-as-you-go fliers, the freshly launched program both improves choice and accessibility (two ongoing gripes in the charter market) and pulls on the rewards based model typically favored by commercial airlines — a scheme that marks the first of its kind in the private aviation industry. Harnessing its strategic partnership with Delta Air Lines, which was part of a multimillion-dollar bailout program for Wheels Up last year, the aviation company now offers members the unique opportunity to earn Delta Diamond Medallion Status based on their qualifying private spend. One of Delta’s most premium membership bands, Diamond Medallion Status includes priority airport services, unlimited complimentary upgrades, waived checked baggage fees and a choice of customizable benefits. Members can now also use Wheels Up deposit funds towards commercial Delta flights, as well as receive a 20% discount on select commercial Delta routes. Wheels Up also promises to cap costs on high-demand days and reduce rates during non-peak times to help improve savings across the board. “This new product model makes Wheels Up the first company in the industry to offer incentives for frequent fliers in the form of flight credits and commercial benefits. We believe this new model is representative of the flexibility travelers want today, and we hope through these incentives our existing community and new customers will see Wheels Up as the top choice for a premium, luxury travel experience,” CEO George Mattson told Elite Traveler. While the bulk of new benefits are geared toward Wheels Up members, pay-as-you-go charter customers are also privy to a host of new incentives, including a 2% flight credit for every $50,000 flown and Delta Diamond Medallion Status after achieving qualifying flight spend. wheelsup.com elite traveler FALL2024 46 by KimAyling Aviation THE EXTRA MILE

RISE OF THE SUPER MARINA

TAKE THREE/// SUPERYACHTS

1 RENAISSANCE

367.4ft (112m), from $3.2m (€3m) per week for up to 36 guests in the Mediterranean burgessyachts.com

With more and more yachts on the water, many of which are longer than 130ft, fi nding a safe harbor in the right location can be harder than it sounds. But investors are responding to the demand. In a growing trend for supersized destination marinas, the International Yacht Club d’Antibes recently invested a hefty $147m to upgrade Port Vauban’s iconic Quai Camille Rayon, better known as Billionaires’ Quay because of the gargantuan size of yachts it can accommodate. O ff ering far more than just a place to park your yacht, the new site boasts a brand-new clubhouse, helipad reception area and upgraded crew facilities. Barcelona’s Port Vell has also been transformed into an impressive 151-berth facility for yachts of up to620ft, o ff ering owners and crew convenient access to the city and all that the popular Catalan capital has too ff er. The only other marina in Europe with larger berths than Barcelona is Porto Montenegro in the Bay of Kotor. Credited with starting the trend for destination marinas when it completed construction in 2014, Porto Montenegro has become a destination in itself, with a fi ve-star hotel, luxury boutiques and even an international school on-site for berth owners to use. Prices, however, can be high for such prime locations — a 280-ft superyacht owner would need to pay in the neighborhood of $9.1m for a 280-ft berth on a 10-year lease in Quai Camille Rayon. Many berths are sublet by their owners at high prices when not in use, and given that most superyachts spend just 10% of the time cruising, a berth to call home for these larger yachts (whether rented or owned) has

become an essential, and competitive, part of ownership — something that is true not just for the owner, but also for the crew who prefer a home base where they can put down roots and buy property. A number of future developments are also in the pipeline that are designed to fi ll the gap for large superyacht berths, including a brand-new and quite visionary project called Habacoa located in the Bahamas. Scheduled to launch in 2027, Port Habacoa will be the largest marina in North America, o ff ering a total of 150 berths spanning from 60ft (18m) to 700ft (200m). Lying 50 nautical miles from Nassau, and only 160 nautical miles from the yachting hub of Fort Lauderdale, Habacoa will certainly ful fi ll a demand, as statistics suggest that there are seven superyachts for every berth in theUS. The highly anticipated Habacoa aims to become one of the most exclusive destination marinas in the world. More than just a safe harbor, Habacoa will feature an exclusive members-only yacht club, and a casino and a nightclub complex designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. The sustainable development also includes residences and a fi ve-star hotel, restaurants, boutiques, a children’s water park, and a wellness and fi tness center. The landmark development at Habacoa joins several other recently built destination marinas, like the sprawling Dubai Harbour Marina, which opened in 2020, and Montenegro’s Portonovi, which opened in 2019. These destination marinas o ff er style and functionality for the modern-day yacht owner, as well as a place for crew to call home.

Wine & Spirits by ElinMcCoy

Deep under Napa Valley’s sun-drenched hills, barrels of wine are transforming into greatness inside caves. Some look like a set from Game of Thrones ; others like the lair of a mysterious villain in a James Bond fi lm. But these underground wine havens are also a key to sustainability in a region threatened by global warming and wild fi res. That’s the story behind the new cave at Signorello Estate winery (pictured below and at right) o ff the Silverado Trail, which opened to visitors in mid-June. After the deadly 2017 Atlas wild fi re burned the original wood-frame winery and the Signorellos’ home to the ground in 30 minutes, Ray Signorello vowed to rebuild. He wanted a net-zero, fi reproof design so he’d never have to experience that devastating scenario again. Six-and-half years later, the result is a winery that morphs into a wine cave. Wine caves are hardly new — think of the deep chalky cellars in Champagne. In Napa, the fi rst one was dug at Schramsberg by Chinese laborers 150 years ago, and more than 65 wineries in the valley have carved out their own for barrel aging. The next frontier, thanks to cutting-edge technology, is putting the winery in the cave too. Two years ago, acclaimed fi lm director Francis Ford Coppola’s historic Inglenook estate unveiled a 22,000-sq-ft, baseball-diamond-shaped cave that houses 120 fermentation tanks. Signorello calls his version “the winery model for the future.” The entrance is nonburnable concrete, steel and glass. Walk through, and you’re in the cave. An excavator bored a tunnel into the hill and a team sprayed the walls with a special concrete. Barrier insulation Going underground

between the earth and the walls of the 12,000-sq-ft cave waterproofs it. Building into a hill protects from wild fi res far better than above-ground constructions. If a fi reswoops down from above, it will jump over it, making it unlikely that anything inside will be harmed. But there’s much more. Caves save energy. The layers of earth above and around the tunnels provide a stable cool temperature of 55° to 60° Fahrenheit without heating or air-conditioning systems. Natural humidity of 70% to 90% slows evaporation from wine barrels and keeps corks in stored bottles from drying out. Dark and quiet, caves protect wines from light and vibration, which can have a negative impact on the aging process, and they leave a lighter impact on the scenic landscape. Besides their eco-friendly contribution to the wine world, they’re the top spot to stay cool while tasting on a hot day in Napa. On your next visit, succumb to their theatrical allure.

2 2019 INGLENOOK ESTATE RUBICON

Bold and powerful, intense and vibrant, this stunning vintage of the estate’s premier Bordeaux-style cabernet displays notes of tobacco and licorice and is built to age impressively. Director of winemaking Philippe Bascaules is also the winemaking director at Bordeaux’s fi rst growth Chateau Margaux, and it shows in the wine’s elegance and subtlety. From $300, inglenoo k.com

INFLUENCE CRAFTSMANSHIP

Craftsmanship Patek Philippe

As ornate dress watches begin to catch the eye of next-gen collectors, Patek Philippe has reimagined its mid-century classic Golden Ellipse with a bracelet as fascinating and intricate as its movement. Elite Traveler ’s Alex Martin takes a closer look

When Patek Philippe set out its stall at Watches and Wonders in April, much attention was paid to a new Nautilus with a white-gold case, a blue-gray dial and an unusually casual denim inspired strap. The sports watch remains Patek’s most popular timepiece, with some customers waiting upwards of 10 years from order to delivery. As crowds gathered around this usual suspect, the Swiss brand quietly launched a showstopping product 15 years in the making — and it doesn’t even keep the time. On the face of it, a new chain bracelet, presented on an otherwise unchanged preexisting model, may struggle to inspire. But the level of craftsmanship and exact timing of its unveiling display the watchmaker’s uncanny ability to predict trends and innovate accordingly. In true Patek fashion, this is no normal bracelet. Comprised of 363 parts, including over 300 individually hand-polished 18-karat rose gold links, it is one of the most intricate watch bracelets ever released. The bracelet's gold links are fi rst produced by machine before being polished and assembled one by one by chainsmiths. Although visually stunning, the design is as functional as it is stylish and addresses fundamental issues with chain bracelets. Popular in the 1960s and 1970s, even the best bracelets were in fl exible, leaving them uncomfortable to wear and prone to snapping. They were also di ffi cult to adjust and often seen dangling, precariously loose, on wrists at cocktail parties. Impractical for both watchmakers and wearers, they inevitably fell out of fashion.

“Classic chain bracelets from the 1960s and 1970s, with their links crafted one by one by artisan chainsmiths from a gold wire and then assembled by hand, were appreciated for their remarkable suppleness and creativity,” Jasmina Steele, communications director at Patek Philippe, told Elite Traveler. “The main challenge with these beautiful traditional chain bracelets was that the adjustment of the length of the bracelet had to be done at the point of sale by a jeweler and, once cut-reduced in size, it could not be readapted to a larger size. Consequently, the bracelet had to be replaced. “Some of the chain bracelets were also fragile, and repairing was quite di ffi cult if not impossible without a repair that would be visible. Finally, in time, many points of sale no longer had on-site jewelers, so the sizing of the bracelet became di ffi cult or just not possible upon purchase.” In Patek’s patented design, the links move independently from one another, making it more fl exible and more comfortable. To address the fundamental issues around the fi t, its chainsmiths have innovated a new clasp with three di ff erent adjustment notches, giving wearers a much closer fi t without the need to take it back to the jeweler. This new bracelet took the best part of two decades to develop, so you would assume such an investment would go into the manufacturer's most popular models, but it has instead been given exclusively to one of its most under-appreciated: the Golden Ellipse.

First launched in 1968, this mid-century-inspired dress watch stood in stark contrast to designs of the time. Not much has changed 56 years later. It still has the same not-quite-a-rectangle but not-quite-a-circle case and a hyper-minimalist dial. It still stands out in a sea of right-angled dress watches. While this new release — Reference 5738/1R - 001— represents something of a relaunch for the Golden Ellipse, it has been ever-present in Patek’s collection since its unveiling (albeit fi rmly in the shadow of the Nautilus and its sportier cousin, the Aquanaut). But mid-century dress watches are back in vogue, with vintage Cartier Tanks and Jaeger-LeCoultre Reversos experiencing an explosion in popularity. Still, Steele believes vintage dress watches would be even more popular with younger consumers had the issue around chain bracelet sizing been solved earlier. She said: “The new chain-style bracelet is the perfect aesthetic association going back to the original Golden Ellipse models of the 1960s. Many younger-generation customers appreciate the design period but have to refrain from considering the vintage original chain bracelet models, because of the bracelet sizing problem and, in most cases, it is no longer possible to re-create the original chain bracelet.” The watch’s ‘sunburst’ ebony black dial, and baton-style hour markers and slim hands (both in rose gold), complement the bracelet and case and re fl ect that classic mid-century mix of black and gold. The movement, an ultra-thin 240 caliber, is another unsung hero. The self-winding movement with a 48-hour power reserve remains largely unchanged from the one that debuted in the original Golden Ellipse in 1968. It measures just 2.53mm thick, giving the watch an overall depth of 5.9mm — that’s the thinnest Patek in its continuous collection. It’s not on par with some of the ultra-thin watches we saw at Watches and Wonders (Bulgari set a world record with its 1.7mm Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC), but it nonetheless remains at the forefront of watch technolo g y almost 60 years after its development. “Creating and producing elegant slim watches is a key design rule of Patek Philippe watches,” Steele said. “The self-winding Caliber 240 is a strong movement, it can drive additional functions and complications, and it is reliable over the long term. It’s what we call a ‘no-problem’ caliber. It is beautiful, and it has proved its dependability over time.”

INFLUENCE THE BIG INTERVIEW

Jean-Michel Cousteau on never slowing down

In the private dining space of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands’ Summer Pavilion, legendary ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau sits down with Elite Traveler ’s Samantha Coles to discuss his incredible career and how he hopes to make an impact on future decision makers

“I started diving when I was seven years old,” Jean-Michel Cousteau tells me as we sip on tea and icedco ff ee, taking a break from the blazing Maldivian sun. “There were no regulations in those days. I’ve had the privilege of being exposed to the world at a time where there was no cell phone, no computer — and television was pretty basic. We had no connection like we have now. And I’ve been traveling all my life. Thanks to my mother and father, we were constantly going to di ff erent places, most of the time by boat.” Things have changed quite a bit since then; Cousteau tells me about a diving experience where he was 30 ft beneath the surface and, with a cable attached to the boat that was then connected to a hotel’s communication system, he was able to answer questions while he was underwater. “I was answering people in Japan and Canada at the same time.” This innate drive for exploration and pushing

Fari Islands resort a few days ago. Growing up spending such a huge amount of time at sea has had a profound impact on the 86-year-old: “I was going in the ocean all the time — sometimes before school — it hashadane ff ect on the rest of my life. I am so honored to be able to do that; I have been diving for 78 years. This morning I was diving, and I am looking forward to diving tomorrow morning.” Cousteau recalls a sailing trip to New York City with his father and a cameraman as they were fi lming a documentary. “My father was talking to me about expeditions. Suddenly, he turned his head to me and said ‘It is you, Jean-Michel, you will carry on the fl ame of my faith.’ And ever since then, I have never stopped because I have a mission. I was already in that environment; learning, involved in fi lm production… and since then, I have never stopped, and I never will.” And that fl ame is certainly burning — Cousteau is visiting the resort for the Ambassadors of the Environment program. The educational initiative promotes environmental awareness and stewardship; hands-on learning experiences are combined with scienti fi c explanations to inform participants about the environment. The program champions the importance of understanding ecosystems, as Cousteau explains: “Ocean exploration is critical; there are millions of species that we don’t know exist. There are dozens that we do know but we don’t understand their behavior or what they depend upon.” The Ambassadors of the Environment program aims to inspire individuals to appreciate and actively participate in preserving the natural world, and is especially aimed at younger people. “After decades of exploring and meeting scientists, I decided that I wanted to have a program to share with young people — the future decision makers. The future generations will have all the information and decision power to protect what we all depend upon. If you protect the ocean, you protect yourself.” The Ambassadors of the Environment program at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands is the fi rst in the Asia-Paci fi c region (the program is exclusive to the hotel brand and is available at select resorts around the world, including The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua; The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara — each program is tailored to the location’s natural environment).

boundaries is perhaps in Cousteau’s blood. His father, Jacques Cousteau, was a French naval o ffi cer, oceanographer and fi lmmaker; he co-invented the fi rst successful open-circuit, self-contained underwater breathing equipment, called the Aqua-Lung, which assisted him in creating some of the fi rst underwater documentaries. Cousteau tells me that he would go diving in the mornings before school and that he has been diving every morning since arriving at The Ritz-Carlton, “The future generations will have all the information and decision power to protect what we all depend upon. If you protect the ocean, you protect yourself.”
