Hope and Holland have shared a common history since the college and community were foundedmore than 170 years ago by the Reverend A.C. Van Raalte. As the town grew and diversified, Hope, too, expanded. Its original “Five Acres” blossomed to 125, 10 students to more than 3000, and its facilities from 1857’s Van Vleck Hall to the Pelletron particle accelerator on campus today. In the 21st century, Hope is a distinguished four-year liberal arts college that effectively combines academic excellence with a vibrant Christian faith. The supportive and welcoming community attracts students not only from all over the country, but from around the globe. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1, Hope’s internationally recognized teacher-scholars engage students in collaborative, graduate school style research in all fields of study.
