PUMP HOUSE MUSEUM + LEARNING CENTER (SEASONAL) 2282 Ottawa Beach Rd • (616) 607.6854 historicottawabeachsociety.org Imagine strolling the shores of today’s Tunnel Park, gazing at stars and listening to the roar of . . . lions. Or swinging in an “Airship” over Lake Macatawa while basking in the glow of 500 lights. Back in the time of Holland’s earliest amusements, these were just a sample of the delightful diversions at hand. Come learn about the Lakewood Farm and Zoo and the Jenison Electric Amusement Park in the historic setting of the Pump House Museum. The Holland’s Earliest Amusements display chronicles the stories of the elephants and camels that transported visitors along Lake Michigan to arrive at one of the largest private zoos in the nation. It tells of the “Figure 8 Toboggan” wooden roller coaster that drew thousands each summer by ship and by train from Chicago, St. Louis and beyond to Holland. Interactive displays allow visitors to take virtual tours of both parks, and a hands-on digital exhibit enables visitors to learn about the Big Red Lighthouse in nearby Holland Harbor. The Pump House is the last surviving structure of the Hotel Ottawa Complex that burned in 1923 and is a central feature of the Black Lake Boardwalk linking the Mt. Pisgah dune stairs to the Holland State Park. It is open seasonally from mid-June to Labor Day, offering live historical programs throughout the summer. A center for curiosity, inspiration and exploration, the Kruizenga Art Museum is a cultural resource for both Hope College and all of West Michigan. With 4,000 square feet of gallery space, this teaching museum engages students and visitors alike in the study of art frommany different perspectives and disciplines. The museum's exhibitions change regularly throughout the year and feature artworks from a wide range of historical periods and cultural traditions. The artworks on view are drawn from the museum's extensive permanent collection and loans from diverse museums and private collections. Although every exhibit includes interpretive labels, visitors are invited to explore the displays with an open mind and to find their own meaning in the artworks. The museum is open to Hope students and employees and to the public at large. Call or check the museum's website to learn what is currently on view and dates for receptions heralding new exhibits. Public visiting hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm; parking is available in Hope College visitor lots and on city streets nearby. The museum is always free, and all are welcome.
