Paving Futures

Puente is a program in which their goal is for students to go to a four-year university or college. It also helps develop community building skills. It is a great source of network within each other and it helps gain the best high school experience. Puente helps students create self confidence to carry out to college and in their everyday life. - Mr. Higuera

The AVID and Puente programs are a couple of programs that played a big role at Desert Mirage, guiding students in the direction of higher education like college. Albeit they are two very different entities on campus, but they both serve a common goal, to equip students with strong effective tools to become successful in college. "Avid has been beneficial to me because it helped me stay on task, taught me the value of integrity, the importance of obtaining a college degree, and taught me the power of community support. But I actually believe that I was admitted to college because AVID helped me with every step of the way" -Angela Magana. In these programs, the class sessions were always rigorous. The teachers of both programs helped students with different ways to stay motivated and organized while getting the best out of every student. "Puente increased one's cultural awareness. We learned about societal issues that people of color, marginalized groups face daily, and the urgency in every one of our voices being heard, but most importantly, in my opinion, the need for a college education" -Gabriela Barroso. After graduating from each program the students will be empowered and able to face challenging situations, know the importance of determination, and education, thus keep going until their goals are met. It is quite evident these programs were a great help for the students' lives. Puente and Avid will continue to grow and help students reach their full potential for many years to come. Student Teacher Lessons Students will admit that making a connection with any faculty member on our campus made all the difference. All of the teachers and staff included, genuinely care about the wellbeing and future of students. With that said, respect and appreciation were mutual amongst all. Seniors Edna Vargas and Elton Cervantes knew all about it. They received valuable college advice from Counselor Michelle Perez "Note taking was essential in school, they helped me become a better student and they came in clutch when it was time to study." In Puente classes taking notes became a daily thing. The students felt better in class by taking notes. Organization is key to everybody it made life easier after school and in the workforce.
