Desert Mirage HS 2020

Altars The most essential part of the celebration is the altar. Do not get it twisted the altar is not for worshiping but rather to welcome spirits back to the realm of living. They usually have water, food, marigold flowers, family photos, candles and even toys.

Celebrating the Fun

Many students and family come out to support the school but also celebrate with us the dead. There are clubs all around campus guiding our guest as well as vendors fundraising for there club.

Mr. Higuera could not resist himself and joined the fun.

Beliefs

It is believed that the spirits come back to the world of living to be with their families one day out of the year. As stories have been passed down it is said that babies and children who have died or also called "angelitos" arrive on October 31 and the adults come the following day.

Classrooms and pods are decorated very creatively. Some are very elaborate others more simple but still beautiful. They are all built for the same reason, to celebrate the dead and welcome their spirits. Drip

Clothes make a statement, costumes tell a story. Dressing up and disguising yourself as a skeleton is part of the fun. People of all ages have their faces artfully painted to resemble the Day of the Dead

"You make me un' poco loco.' (You make me go crazy) Friendship is like peeing on yourself, everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings. Jazmine Gamboa and Monica Rivas are clowns when they are together. It was pure comedy at the Dia de Los Muertos Carnival with the two.

"Hay que vivir sonrioendo, para morir contentos. (Lets live smiling so we die happy) The only thing that will make you happy with who you are, and not who people think you are. Jazmin Vega

Calaveras means "skulls" but in the 1800s it was used to describe short, humorous poems, making fun of the living. At Desert Mirage we have a tradition where the art classes draw skulls and drawings all over campusgrounds.
