What is the “Dental Amalgam Rule”? The primary focus of the EPA Dental Rule is on the use of amalgam separators that are ISO 11143:2008 certified at a separation rate of 95%. Additionally, dental offices are now required to use an amalgam bucket, as defined in the BMPs, for the disposal of all items that come in contact with amalgam. Why did the regulation pass? The EPA’s promotion of the newly passed “Amalgam Dental Rule” was an effort to reduce the amount of mercury discharged to the wastewater. According to the EPA, amalgam separators are "practical, affordable and readily available" technology for capturing mercury before it is discharged into sewers that drain into POTWs. Mercury captured in a separator can then be recycled properly and safely. EPA expects the annual reduction of mercury discharge to be reduced by 5.1 tons.

The rule was published into the Federal Register on June 14, 2017 and went into effect on July 14, 2017.
