GO, WARRIORS!
Greetings and Welcome to the Cypress Christian School Community! I am honored to serve as the Athletic Director for all Cypress Christian School students. I am pleased to take a moment to reflect on the exciting journey we have undertaken in our Athletic Department. I care deeply about our athletic program, student athletes and coaches. Being a part of athletics teaches teamwork, builds character, discipline, work ethic and self-esteem. While we always want to put a winning product on the field or court, our priority is the development of the character and integrity of the next generation of men and women. We will continue to fulfill our mission and vision through the vehicle of athletics. I would personally like to express my gratitude to our passionate community and fan base for their continued, unwavering support
of our athletic department. Your commitment to our mission of fostering strong Christian character and values in our students, alongside our athletic programs, is truly inspiring. Because of your partnership and support, we are able to provide our students with a superior education that extends beyond the classroom walls. I invite you to join us on our journey and continue supporting our school’s Athletic Department. Your support can take many forms, including attending games, contributing financially or offering your time and expertise as a volunteer. Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of our students and strengthen the foundation of our Christ-centered
community. Drew Sells

THE ENTIRETY OF CYPRESS CHRISTIAN’S ATHLETIC PROGRAM WENT ON A TEAR EARLIER THIS YEAR. THROUGH THE TIRELESS EFFORTS OF THE ATHLETES AND COACHES, THE SPRING SEASON FEATURED A SERIES OF FIRSTS FOR SOME OF THEIR TEAMS. AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE 2023 SCHOOL YEAR, THE WARRIORS SOLIDIFIED THEMSELVES AS A TAPPS POWERHOUSE IN ALL FACETS OF THEIR ORGANIZATION. HERE IS THE RUNDOWN OF EACH OF THE CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SQUADS WHO TRAVERSED THEIR RESPECTIVE POSTSEASONS TO EMERGE AS STATE CHAMPIONS.
BASEBALL Led by coach David Swan, the Warriors were a force on the diamond throughout the 2022-23 regular season, which would seamlessly carry over into the playoffs. After thrashing Holy Cross of San Antonio (12-1) at Regionals, followed by a nail-biter against Geneva School (6-5) in the State Semis, Cypress Christian would go on to claim their third state title with their 10-7 win over McKinney Christian. Subsequently, Drew Mestayer, and District MVP Zach Thibodeaux would become TAPPS-III all-state recipients, with Jacob Lukaszewski, and Warren Haudek each getting honorable-mention nods.
SOFTBALL Fresh off the heels of yet another remarkable district campaign, CCS Softball endured an emotional rollercoaster in the postseason. The Warriors were defeated by Holy Cross of San Antonio in the Regional matchup and it appeared that Coach Jessi Harvey’s team would miss out on the coveted TAPPS-III title. Or so they thought. Evidently, Holy Cross had an ineligible player on their roster, deeming them disqualified, and sending Cypress Christian to the State Final Four for the third straight year. From there, the Warriors won a close victory over Incarnate Word-Corpus Christi (8-6), before defeating The Brook Hill School (5-1) to earn the program its first-ever State Championship. For their efforts throughout the season, Lucy Davis, Megan Smith, Sarah Olenick, Audrey Petrowski, Chloe Roberson, and Macie Dammeyer each earned all-state honors.
GIRLS GOLF The Warriors made history on the course in May, by earning their first State Championship in school history for the golf program. When they traveled to the Squaw Valley Golf Club in Glen Rose, Texas, the girls team easily had the deepest roster compared to the various schools in contention. By the end of the two-day tournament, Cypress Christian emerged on top with a composite score of 720, which was an entire five strokes ahead of the second-place finisher. Individually, Makena Pham and Megan Carter were the front-runners on the Warriors squad, finishing in the top-10 with scores of 175 and 179 respectively. Other key contributors – Lindsey Brashier (186), Claire Johnson (188), and Paige Petru (190) – each finished in the Top 20 to seal CCS’s victory. GIRLS TRACK & FIELD Cypress Christian’s girls track & field has dominated TAPPS-4A on the track in recent years, winning its third straight State Title. Given the precedence of the program, paired with numerous returning stars, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 2023 was the Warriors’ year. When the team competed at the State Meet in May, the relays were Cypress Christian’s meal ticket, as the girls took gold in both the 4x100 and 4x200. Riley Fox and Sophia Swanton would earn bronze in the 100m and 200m, respectively. On the field side, Mariana Van Dyk and Nicole Santos claimed the title in their respective events. At the end of the day, the Warriors T&F program would claim its third-consecutive State Championship.

\\ By Matthew Ogle HOGAN TURNING CCS FOOTBALL INTO STATE BRAND CU L T U R E A WINNING
IN RECENT YEARS, CYPRESS CHRISTIAN FOOTBALL HAS BECOME THE BRAND IN TAPPS COMPETITION. Reaching the TAPPS-III State Championship three years in a row, winning in 2021, speaks volumes about the players and coaches involved in the consistency of the program. While it may be the players who are battling it out on the gridiron, some credit has to be given to the influence coach Kris Hogan has had on the favorable outcomes the Warriors have enjoyed. One stands to wonder, what is his secret ingredient? “We try to create a culture of ownership,” said Hogan. “When the players own the culture, and it’s a player-driven program, it’s like they have skin in the game. When the players have the steering wheel, they want to be responsible and held accountable for the results. “That bleeds into the offseason and into the details. Also, the culture of unity is big. Our motto is ‘One Heart’ so we want to be unified in what we’re doing, and we want the students to own the process. I’d say those two aspects, plus our Christian heritage, is what makes this program distinct and gives us standards of success.” Several aspects of football comes down to the X’s and O’s, but Hogan is just as passionate about how his players are impacted off the field. “We’re pretty intentional
the brand of CCS in the ensuing months? “We have four goals for the upcoming season,” he said. “We want to win the opener, win the district championship, we want to practice at Thanksgiving and we want to win the closer. There are a lot of great teams in the state of Texas, so positioning ourselves to reach those goals takes a lot of hard work. But, we don’t expect anything less than that.” Another championship might be a safe bet.

about the discipleship process,” he said. “We have another phrase that we use, it’s ‘Gentlemen Warrior’, which is the epitome of what you want a man to be. Gentle, kind and considerate when he’s supposed to, and then be a ‘Warrior’ when it calls for it. “We’re just using football, and all sports here, as a platform to build the new generation of husbands, dads, voters and business owners.” Hogan spent 17 years at Grapevine Faith before joining the Cypress Christian family three years
“For me, the biggest blessing is to help kids reach their full potential,” Hogan said. “Sometimes you can’t do it for them, but you can certainly give them the tools and the position to succeed. That’s been a very gratifying process for me in my coaching career. “Since I’ve moved here, I’ve loved Cypress. This is an unbelievable place with unbelievable people and I feel called to be here. I feel blessed to be a part of this community.” With all that in mind, what should we expect from

SENIOR OWEN WITSCHONKE IS A TRIPLE THREAT ON THE WARRIOR FOOTBALL TEAM, JUGGLING ROLES ON OFFENSE (WIDE RECEIVER), DEFENSE (SAFETY) AND SPECIAL TEAMS (KICKER); BUT OWEN’S TALENTS EXTEND FAR BEYOND THE FOOTBALL FIELD. He is also a triple threat in CCS athletics, participating in a sport every season – football in the fall, basketball in the winter and track & field in the spring. Over the past three years, Witschonke has played a pivotal role in state championship victories in both football and track & field. His accomplishments speak volumes about his dedication and skill. Being a multi-sport athlete in high school can be incredibly demanding. success. He’s developed a rock-solid work ethic and maintains a steady daily routine that keeps him on top of his game both on and off the field. He hits the practice field every day, and immediately after, he dives into his homework and studies. This disciplined schedule grants him balance and allows him to indulge in his other passions, such as watching sports and serving as a small group leader in his church’s junior high ministry. Additionally, he is a Bible study leader with other high school seniors. A verse that holds particular significance in Owen’s life is 1 Timothy 4:12, which states, “Let no Owen, however, has cracked the code to

He instills the importance of building strong character alongside the pursuit of championships. In Owen Witschonke, we witness this philosophy in action, as he shines brightly as a beacon of both athletic talent and unwavering integrity on and off the field.
Hogan instilled a newfound belief in Owen’s abilities and encouraged him to believe in himself and his abilities. He entrusted Owen with roles on both sides of the ball and special teams, elevating him to the status of starting safety in addition to his role as the team’s kicker. Coach Chrissy Woodward will lead the charge, after spending four years of coaching at state power Cypress Ranch. Despite being a part of a nationally-ranked volleyball team, there were several reasons that compelled Woodward to take her talents to the private school sector. “I was looking for a good balance between work and home life,” she said.. “I have three kiddos of my own. So, that kind of pushed me forward to move in this direction. I heard great things about this school and I knew they had great athletes. I want to build a successful culture here and we have the ingredients to do so.” Given the change in direction, what kind of culture will the new coach be bringing to Cypress Christian volleyball? “I think it has to do with looking at your foundation of coaching,” said Woodward. “I go back to structure and discipline. You want to have a little bit of fun, but you have to bring the competitive element into play. “This school has great athletes, but we haven’t been as successful in the volleyball program. CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IS BLESSED TO HAVE A UNIQUE GROUP OF RUNNERS ON THE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM EVERY SEASON. It takes committed individuals to attend early morning practices and endure Thursday afternoon speed work sessions in the heat of Houston, TX in August and September. Head Coach Justin Begnoche and his team talk frequently about how this sport uniquely needs to ‘see you dig’ (CUDIG) because the five team values are Competition, Unity, Discipline, Integrity and Gratitude. They wholeheartedly believe these characteristics make teammates who exhibit Christ to everyone around them as they seek to become better racers and followers. This dedication to excellence displayed by CCS student-athletes and volunteers has earned the cross country program an excellent reputation in the greater Houston area. This is evident when the team hosts the annual CCS Warrior Invitational, with this season’s record attendance surpassing 1,800 runners. Junior Caleb Burgos has played a vital role in the growth and success of the cross country program since his sophomore year. DIXON BUILDING ELITE WARRIORS L E V E L N E X T
If athletes are trained effectively, tested frequently and performances are consistently increasing, confidence is built. A confident athlete is one who will excel at their sport. At CCS, we believe in developing exercise prescriptions based on the demands of high level athletics. For every athlete, an offseason, preseason and in season training protocol is created to maximize strength, hypertrophy, power output, speed, flexibility, agility, body composition and develop motor patterns appropriate to the activities being trained for. Nutritional strategies are also implemented to prepare athletes for each phase of their training. With these protocols and series of events in place, students are mentally and physically prepared for each phase of their competition year and the demands associated with it. Preparation for DI, DII, and DIII collegiate athletics is also at the center of the program. At Cypress Christian, we are always learning and developing our craft. We strive to use the most up-to-date, effective programming possible to develop our athletes and prepare them for the high demands of next-level athletics.
