SPEAR CARRIER AWARD
S he describes herself as an 80-year-old woman in a 35-year-old body with the sense of humor of a 25-year-old man. She also can be described as this year’s recipient of the Spear Carrier Award, which recognizes an unsung hero in the cast. She is none other than six-year cast member Julia Riley Davila. Julia found out about the show from an ad in a CBA email, and although she had never seen the show or even heard of it, she was inspired to audition. “It seemed like a fun thing to do–and it is!” exclaims Julia. In addition to performing in the Bar Show, Julia also is on the Costume Committee and looks forward to suggesting ideas for numbers and writing lyrics in the future. Julia’s favorite part of the show is the cast. “We get to play together,” she explains. Julia’s favorite role thus far is Pikachu in the Pokémon number from last year. Julia points
worked for the past six years. She received her undergraduate degree in 2003 from the University of Chicago, where she majored in history with a minor in math; Julia received her law degree in 2010 from the University of Missouri. In the midst of all that education, Julia served in AmeriCorps, the United-States- based version of the Peace Corps. Besides Ba r-Show-ing a nd banking, Julia is a triathlete. This year she competed in her third Chicago Sprint Triathlon since 2012 and finished with her best time. She also enjoys quilting and making her own ice creams and sorbets. Julia describes the Bar Show as something unique in Chicago– “it’s the opportunity to prove to people that lawyers can be fun and entertaining,” explains Julia. Unique, fun and entertaining– something that the Bar Show and this year’s Spear Carrier Award winner have in common.
