December, 2017

Dear CBA Members and Guests:

The Bar Show, now in its 94th year, is a wonderful and joyful prelude to the holiday season. For almost a century, the show has parodied national, international and local figures in the news with a special focus on the fodder provided by our state and local politi- cians during the past year. The very talented lawyers and judges, all members of the CBA, who write and perform in the Bar Show remind us of the human foibles that can and often do afflict some of the most newsworthy personalities of our era. Through the years, the bar show’s writers have used an incredibly wide and totally unfiltered lens in deciding who is most deserving of a good lampooning. The song and dance pillorying is all in good fun and reminds us as we close out another year with “Much To Sue About Nothing” of the Bard’s sage advice…”with mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come.” Enjoy the show!

My best wishes to you and yours for a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season and New Year!

HORSE’S ASS AWARD

M e l i s s a R e d o n d o appeared in her first musical at age 10, and she hasn’t stopped performing since. From the classical repertoire she studied in voice for over a decade to the occasional Celine Dion or Mariah Carey classic belted out at karaoke, Melissa has developed a reputation as a singer who can bring power and finesse to just about any musical number. It is perhaps no surprise that Melissa is being honored with the Horse’s Ass Award for the best individual performance in last year’s Bar Show. The performance in question

hilarious and heartbreaking as she mined the vulnerability of the woman behind then-president- elect Donald J. Trump. Vocally, she found new colors and shadings in a perhaps overly familiar song and visually she looked the part from head to toe in a stunning white gown that was from her own collection and an enormous wig that was decidedly not. In truth, Melissa has been giving knockout Ba r Show performances ever since she joined the show in 2012, whether as a cheerleader extolling the virtues of Wikipedia to “Oh, Mickey!” or Attorney General Lisa Madigan lamenting her father’s foibles to “A Boy Like That” from West Side Story. Melissa says she is “grateful for all the amazing musical opportunities the Bar Show has provided,” as well as “the wonderful relationships with other lawyers with strange musical theater obsessions.” Professionally, Melissa is the proud owner of a startup company and ser ves a s its in-house counsel. She also has a style and travel blog, Real/ Refined, on which she chronicles her far-flung adventures from Barcelona to Iceland and the many cute outfits that are sure to accompany her. Melissa earned her degree in Business Administration and Marketing at the University of Illinois and graduated fromLoyola University School of Law.

NOT JUST YOUR GO-TO NURSING HOME LAWYERS

This summer, we set the record for a jury verdict under the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act when we achieved a $4.1 million result for our client, surpassing the previous record set by our firm in 2006 of $2.9 million. Although we are proud of these results and our reputation in handling nursing home cases, our results in other serious injury, accident, and medical malpractice matters should not be overlooked. We routinely obtain substantial results in medical malpractice matters and other personal injury matters. Recently we achieved a $9 million-dollar medical malpractice birth injury settlement. We have also set the Illinois record for the largest Jones Act settlement of $7.5 million for an injured boat worker.

OTHER NOTABLE RESULTS:

• $17.7 Million Medical Malpractice/ Brain Injury Settlement • $14 Million Medical Malpractice Lung Cancer Verdict • $10 Million Pedestrian Accident Verdict • $7.6 Million Medical Malpractice Postpartum Bleed Settlement • $6.5 Million Record Kane County Wrongful Death/Trucking Accident • $6.5 Million Birth Injury Settlement

QUILICI CUP

H owdoes she do it all? Bar Show performer, Road Show c oord inator, Playbill editor, previous Horse’s Ass Award winner, larger than life–Kathryn Kelly (our own “Kate”) is the winner of the 2016 Quilici Cup. The Quilici Cup recognizes a cast member who goes above and beyond, helping the show to shine–and surely Kate’s light is bright. It is especially fitting that she receive this prestigious award in her 25th year in the Bar Show. Joining the show in 1993 right after graduating from DePaul Law, Kate was relegated to small bits of dialogue before musical numbers. Eventually she was “discovered” and joined the singing chorus. From there her star has continued to rise and she received the 2012 Horse’s Ass Award for best individual performance in the show. Kate continues to sparkle in featured roles - some of her favorites include Miss Piggy, Hillary Clinton, an Avenue Q puppet, and a reporter singing about Tiger Woods’ rehab. But Kate’s light does not just warm the stage. She has a hand in many parts of the show–just the reason she is being honored with this award. Her big personality makes her a cast favorite, taking new cast members under her wing and acting as a confidant for any cast member who might need one. And then there’s her legendary sense of humor, which she brandishes to great effect, particularly when a little break in the tension is needed. She also

pulls it all together. With the help of co-chair Vita Levar, Kate organizes the photos, captions, articles and bios. Not a small task given the deadlines and editing needed to produce this product. You may think that these contributions earned her this award, but there are many more small ways that Kate makes this show work. From helping a cast member with a quick change to making prop signs, from reviewing choreography to being a sounding board for the steering committee, her contributions– large and small–make her a great piece of the production puzzle. It’s obvious that Kate enjoys the chance to perform on stage. Look for her tonight as Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Cecile Richards. But she notes that being a part of the Bar Show family is part of the experience. “While the chance to perform is lovely, it’s the wonderful people that make the experience whole. They are talented, accepting, and hilarious.” Just this year, she traveled with Joyce Wixson, sang at the wedding of Jacqueline Carroll, and hosted Bar Show bridal and baby showers. Kate is an Assistant United States Attorney. She also sings professionally and teaches at DePaul University. Kate can be found, first and foremost, rooting for her amazing kids (16 and 13). There is no doubt that Kate deserves the Quilici Cup for all she has done for the Bar Show. Thanks Kate! Shine on!

Kathryn A. Kelly

serves as the unofficial dance captain, a non-dancer who helps with movement on stage. Director/choreographer Marla Lampert often leaves it to Kate to get everyone coordinated–not too hard, as she is a certified aerobics instructor. Kate also leads the Road Show cast as they perform for charities throughout the Chicago area from January through June. Kate is the point of contact for the event, directs the show and keeps things humming (she’s quick to say she couldn’t do it without cast member and friend Rainell Rains). While coordinating the schedules of this group is akin to herding cats on steroids, these shows allow the Bar Show to spread joy and laughter to a larger audience while helping raise funds for charities: benef iciaries have included Oakton Community College, other local non-profits, and the Chicago Bar Foundation. For many years, Kate has contributed to the show’s playbill, the one you are reading now, and heads the committee which

SPEAR CARRIER AWARD

S he describes herself as an 80-year-old woman in a 35-year-old body with the sense of humor of a 25-year-old man. She also can be described as this year’s recipient of the Spear Carrier Award, which recognizes an unsung hero in the cast. She is none other than six-year cast member Julia Riley Davila. Julia found out about the show from an ad in a CBA email, and although she had never seen the show or even heard of it, she was inspired to audition. “It seemed like a fun thing to do–and it is!” exclaims Julia. In addition to performing in the Bar Show, Julia also is on the Costume Committee and looks forward to suggesting ideas for numbers and writing lyrics in the future. Julia’s favorite part of the show is the cast. “We get to play together,” she explains. Julia’s favorite role thus far is Pikachu in the Pokémon number from last year. Julia points

worked for the past six years. She received her undergraduate degree in 2003 from the University of Chicago, where she majored in history with a minor in math; Julia received her law degree in 2010 from the University of Missouri. In the midst of all that education, Julia served in AmeriCorps, the United-States- based version of the Peace Corps. Besides Ba r-Show-ing a nd banking, Julia is a triathlete. This year she competed in her third Chicago Sprint Triathlon since 2012 and finished with her best time. She also enjoys quilting and making her own ice creams and sorbets. Julia describes the Bar Show as something unique in Chicago– “it’s the opportunity to prove to people that lawyers can be fun and entertaining,” explains Julia. Unique, fun and entertaining– something that the Bar Show and this year’s Spear Carrier Award winner have in common.

Julia Riley Davila

out that Pikachu is an actual Pokémon character, and it was great fun to costume herself and the other Pokémons. Her favorite musical number, however, is from a few years back–the Kate and Pippa Middleton number set to Katy Perry’s “California Girls.” Julia designed the fascinator hats that Kate and Pippa wore and described the number as “just very fun!” By day, Julia is VP, Assistant General Counsel at JPMorgan Chase Bank, where she has

JULIE AWARD

The 2016 Julie Award winner: Fitness Junk

A s anyone who has secretly watched the entirety of any exercise infomercial or seen a NordicTrack gather dust in the corner can tell you, fitness trends come and go quickly. And while some intrepid souls make sweat stains the new black, the rest of us can end up feeling like flabby extras fromOlivia Newton John’s “Physical.” The 2016 Julie Award winner mined all of that fitness awkwardness for comic gold, with Bar Show director and choreographer Marla Lampert turning sweatbands and spandex into the best production number in the show. The Julie Award was initiated in 2013 in honor of former Bar Show head writer and veteran performer, the Honorable Julian Frazin, whose infectious songs and high-energy performances lit up the show for many years. Judge Frazin has retired from the Bar Show, but its cast and crew still aspire to reach his levels of crowd-pleasing excitement.

Fortunately, some of the Bar Show’s fitness junkies were on hand to counterbalance the novices’ enthusiastic but less- than-polished Jazzercise and bring Jay Schleppenbach’s lyrics to life. Bringing their expert moves to the table were Mark Arnecilla, Kate Bowen, Tony Calzaretta, Jacqueline Carroll, Jenny Jeltes, Amy Keller, Caitlin Maly, Carissa Meyer, Ebony Smith, Danny Teinowitz, Diana Vargo-Lewandowski, Kathryn Weber, and Hillary Weigle. Together, these fitness “haves” and “have nots” had audiences chuckling and tapping their toes to one of the best-loved pop tunes of the past decade. Congratulations to the entire “Fitness Junk” ensemble, winners of the 2016 Julie award!

The 2016 award recipient, “Fitness Junk,” featured Lindsey Millman, Melissa Redondo, and Gina Reynolds as workout aficionados literally singing the praises of FitBits to the strains of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.” Meanwhile, a ragtag group of fitness novices–including Sandy Andina, Ron Balfour, Ellen Duff, Frederick Joseph III, Michael Kedzie, Mghnon Martin, L. Steven Platt, Valerie Raedy, Jay Schleppenbach, Stan Slovin, and Millicent Willis–lamented no more “cheese fries with a side of scotch” or “Netflix and eating string cheese,” dressed in short shorts and tube socks. Once again Barb Burns and the talented Bar Show costume department enhanced the hilarity with great workout “outfits.”

AMONG THE PLAYERS IN CHRISTMAS SPIRITS

“The time has come when you should know just who these lawyers are. They're each and every one of them a credit to the bar.” Those are the opening lines to the now-famous Christmas Spirits standard, The Junior Partners . The lines are also appropriate to introduce to you a few of our cast members.

VALERIE RAEDY

P icture it: there you are, an undergraduate student studying abroad in Milan, Italy. You find yourself at the local’s bar where the owner has just challenged you to sing opera in his establishment! Would you take that bet? Valerie Raedy did! Puccini’s famous soprano aria “Oh Mio Babbino Caro” soon angelically f loated over the din. The locals expressed their appreciation accordingly by buying her drinks. What a memory! But this story actually starts in Vancouver, Washington. Valerie was born “a loud and dramatic child.” Her parents put her in choir in 3rd grade in hopes of getting some peace and quiet for a few hours, but her choir teacher quickly found another teacher to pawn her off on. In 6th grade, Valerie started taking private voice lessons with an amazing teacher, and after much work (on her teacher’s part), Valerie eventually learned how to sing “a little bit and mostly stay in tune.” She was given a music scholarship to attend Lawrence University and Conservatory to study classical voice and where she majored in Government and

suit-type,” presently working for the federal government, but the music inside her just could not be suppressed. Valerie missed being “an interesting person” and thus found the Bar Show–“full of people like her who just like sitting at a desk all day too much to give it up, but want their moment in the spotlight every year.” You may recognize Valerie from past Bar Show performances as a news girl from the future, or singing about social media run amok, or, her favorite, being stalked by a drone. Look for her on stage this year as forgotten sister Tiffany Trump. Valerie feels privileged to be part of the cast and to be surrounded by such “intelligent, fun-loving, and goofy people.”

Music. It was during these years that she found herself singing in that fateful bar in Milan. Because things were going just too well, Valerie decided to give up voice all together and earned a Juris Doctorate from Chicago-Kent College of Law. She became “another typical

attorneys who reside or practice law in Cook County and are ill, incapacitated or superannuated. Through the Fund, the CBA provides financial assistance in the form of grants and loans. Eligible recipients also include lawyers in Cook County who receive assistance from the Lawyers Assistance Program and are in need of medical assistance.

“I can say without hesitation that the generous support that I have received from the Wolf Fund has enabled me to receive medical treatment for several disabling conditions and prevented me from becoming homeless. My hope is that I will be able to return to the full-time practice of law and someday make a substantial contribution to The Chicago Bar Association’s Wolf Fund in return for all the help they have given me. I am ever so grateful.” - Wolf Fund Recipient

LINDSEY MILLMAN

L ike many kids in her nat ive L os Angele s, Lindsey Millman grew up singing , da ncing , a nd performing. Unlike many of those kids, however, Lindsey became an attorney rather than guest starring on a couple of episodes of That’s So Raven and working as a barista. Lindsey considers dance her f irst love and has been fortunate enough to train and perform professionally across the country. As an active member of the Chicago arts community, Lindsey continues to perform all over the city, from midnight modern dance shows in converted warehouses to acoustic guitar sets in dive bars with crowds you can count on one hand. You might recognize her from previous Bar Show roles like one of the

“So Indicted.” Look for Lindsey on stage too in a memorable p e r f orma nc e a s Kou r t ne y Kardashian, one of the forgotten sisters. She is thrilled to be able to fulfill her love of performing and choreographing with such an amazing and talented cast. While Lindsey didn’t exactly pursue her law career just so she could perform in the Bar Show, she does feel lucky to work at a firm with a strong history of supporting the performing arts. She is a Commercial Litigator at Quarles & Brady, a longtime sponsor of the Bar Show, where she regularly helps clients take their most complex and challenging cases to trial. Lindsey got her J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2013 and her B.A. from the University of Wisconsin- Madison in 2009.

Schuyler sisters in “Dear Lin- Manuel Miranda” or an aggressive personal trainer encouraging everyone to buy “Fitness Junk.” You might also know her by her choreography. She had the Obamas and their friends rocking out in “Shut Up, You Can’t Blame Me!” and will get Robert Mueller and his staff moving in this year’s

First daughters Malia (Ebony Smith) and Sasha Obama (Mghnon Martin) want to be where the people are.
