CBA Barristers Big Band is founded. 2000 In December 2004, one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded (approx. 9.3 magnitude) creates a tsunami that devastates South Asia, killing thousands. 2004

2001

Almost 3,000 people are killed in suicide attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and in rural Pennsylvania. The attack launches the global War on Terrorism. Justice Joy V. Cunningham becomes the first African American Woman to serve as CBA President. 2004 Barack Obama is elected president. 2008

Pro Bono Week In 2005 CBA President Justice Michael B. Hyman and The Chicago Bar Foundation held the first Pro Bono Week. Pro Bono Week is now a national celebration.

2006

The CBA Chorus is formed.

Twitter sends its first tweet.

Anita Alvarez becomes the first Hispanic woman and first sitting Cook County State's Attorney to serve as CBA President. 2009

2013

Nelson Mandela dies.

Aurora Abella-Austriaco becomes the first Asian American to serve as CBA President. The world strikes a deal on climate change, dubbed the Paris Agreement. 2016

The CBA's @theBar podcast launches. 2018 The U.S. legalizes same-sex marriage. 2015

2020

Covid-19 creates a global pandemic, killing millions and sending workers home. Courts, law practices, and the CBA work online.

2022

The CBA co-signs the Illinois Judges Association's Declaration of Judicial Independence in an effort to keep politics out of America’s court systems.

CBA Mediation Service is launched.

U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade .
