CBA Record March-April 2024
THE YOUNG LAWYERS SECTION
in their years of practice, regardless of the length of their career. The best piece of advice I can give you as you embark, or continue, on your legal career is to always keep your ears, eyes, and minds open, not just to new advice, but to new experiences, networks, and oppor tunities. The CBA members you meet at lunch, the ones you see at the local gym, the ones you mingle with at YLS events, or the ones you run into in court all have their own experiences and their own sto ries. Help others where and when you can without expecting anything in return.
Always be fair to those with whom you do business and play the long game. It was just over 63 years ago that President John F. Kennedy delivered his inaugural address after being sworn in as the 35th President. Everyone recalls the famous “ask” that he made of the Ameri can people. But it is the preceding sen tence that I think holds most true for us as young lawyers. In fact, just three years later, his brother Robert Kennedy high lighted the same line when speaking to the younger generation in South Africa amidst Apartheid in his Day of Affirma
tion Speech: “The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it–and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.” I invite each of you to take what you learn from this issue of the CBA Record and what you have learned–and continue to learn–from those voices around you to be that light. You may not realize it, but in some way to someone out there, you already are.
