LEGALIZATION WATCH
Has Sports Betting Legalization Reached a Pause? A s noted last month, California voters will decide the future of sports betting in November. Beyond that possibility, the legislation outlook has paused a bit around the country with four states (Maine,Massachusetts,Nebraska,Ohio) waiting to go live. Beyond those and California, no legislation seems in the works in other states, according to theAmerican GamingAssociation. In Florida, the state’s sports betting deal with the Seminole tribe also remains tied up in court. With the case now involving the tribe, state officials and the Department of the Interior, don’t expect a resolution anytime soon.Adding Maine, Massachusetts,Nebraska and Ohio to the betting pool will bring the number of U.S. legalized states and territories to 36. The largest potential market remaining without any legal sports betting isTexas. With no active legislation and not much interest among lawmakers, don’t look for the betting windows (or apps) to open anytime soon in the Lone Star State. The state’s bettors will instead have to head to the neighboring states of Louisiana,Arkansas and New Mexico. Arizona,Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut,Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,Kansas,Maryland,Michigan, Mississippi,Montana, Louisiana,New Hampshire, New Jersey,New Mexico,NewYork,Nevada,North Carolina,Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Dakota,Tennessee,Virginia,Washington, Washington D.C.,West Virginia,Wisconsin and Wyoming. States with live, legal betting (32 with D.C. and Puerto Rico) States that have legalized, but have yet to launch (4) Maine,Massachusetts,Nebraska and Ohio. States awaiting legal resolution (1) Florida (Seminole lawsuit has put a stop to sports betting as of Nov. 22).
