Carefree Travel Guide 2023
Sun and Sandy Beaches The Great Lakes State boasts mile after mile of sugar sand beaches, connecting quaint port towns along the Lake Michigan freshwater coastline. Here, families can build sandcastles or frolic in the cool waters by day, and soak up sunrises and, if they’re lucky, the Aurora Borealis (northern lights) by night.

Holland is nestled right on Lake Michigan and is home to Holland State Park, Tunnel Park, Kirk Park, and Laketown Beach. These areas have expansive stretches of sand to set up and enjoy a sunny day on Lake Michigan. But these beaches aren’t only good to visit in the summertime! Pay a visit to the Big Red Lighthouse at the state park in the winter for stunning views of the frozen lake and amazing sand formations created from the blowing wind and chilly temperatures. Named for the concrete passage that cuts through the sands, Tunnel Park encompasses 22 acres just west of Holland (on Lakeshore Drive). There are plenty of beachy areas for swimming and sunbathing, while the dune climb gives a bit of a workout with the reward of unparalleled views. Kids love the playground with its various play structures, and the picnic areas, grills, and restroom facilities make this an accommodating place for gatherings with family and friends. Many amenities are barrier-free, including the tunnel to a beach overlook deck. Tunnel Park does allow leashed dogs and is open April 1 through October 31 with a vehicle parking fee required.
