The perfect day trip is in the eye of the beholder! Maybe it’s spent taking in cultural or historic sites, or hiking scenic trails? Perhaps paddling down a winding river or dropping a fishing line in one of our 11,000 lakes is more your speed? If winter is your season, hitting the slopes or snowmobile trails may be the coolest way to spend your day. Beer and wine tourism are some of the top reasons people visit Michigan, as is sampling ciders and spirits at area tasting rooms. The Kalamazoo area is home to several of these destinations, which when paired with quaint bed-and-breakfasts and unique farm-to-table restaurants, creates the tastiest of day trips. Whether you’re into maritime history or architectural treasurers, Muskegon has just what you’re looking for. Where else can you tour an authentic submarine – the World War II era USS Silversides (which sits adjacent to the USCGC McLane, also open for tours) or explore the homes of former lumber barons at the Hackley & Hume Historic Sites? Other attractions include the Fire Barn Museum, Muskegon Museum of History & Science, the Lakeshore Museum Center, and Muskegon Museum of Art. Those seeking a rejuvenating getaway can soak up the spa services at destination resorts like Inn at Bay Harbor in the Petoskey area. The Petoskey Hot Stone Massage is one of the signature treatments that is sure to help you relax, as well as facials, manicures, pedicures, and scalp massages (among other offerings). While in the area, take a short drive to Boyne Mountain Resort to check out the new 1,200-foot SkyBridge, the world’s longest timber-towered suspension bridge.
