On the Local Battlefield O n Nov. 3, in the bustle of the presidential election, another battle was fought locally for the mayoral office of Riverside. In a general run-off election, Patricia Lock Dawson, environmental consultant, small business owner and board member for the Riverside Unified School District, obtained more votes than her opponent Andy Melendrez, current Riverside city council member, and is now set to replace the former Mayor William “Rusty” Bailey III. While the final results took weeks to finalize due to COVID-19, ultimately, Dawson gained 58.8% of the total votes, securing her win as mayor. “I’m very excited, I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful,” Lock Dawson said. She said she is planning to take a running start in office if elected and move Riverside into a place that is more inclusive for all. This particular election brought a new wave of interest into local politics. Mayor William “Rusty” Bailey III has served since 2012, and his decision step down created buzz around who would lead in his place. Many CBU students felt this was an opportunity for them to partipate in choosing a local leader. Keilah Diaz, a freshman photography major, is a first-time voter in an election. Diaz says she is passionate about political issues and believes strongly in participating in local races. “I believe that being involved in local government is crucial,” Diaz said. “There is so much importance in voting for those who play essential roles in our local communities, especially during a pandemic.” Patricia Lock Dawson is the new mayor of Riverside, with the intention of moving the city forward for the better.
