CBU’s annual Christmas tree lighting returns Merry & Bright

CBU’s annual tree lighting event Merry & Bright was back in full swing for Christmas 2021. Students gathered to celebrate the holiday, pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, hear live music and more. Merry & Bright kicked off with a reading from Luke 2 by CBU President Dr. Ronald L. Ellis. Students then lit all their candles in preparation for the tree lighting. After the ceremonial tree lighting, there was live music, cookies and hot chocolate for the students to enjoy. Students were encouraged to pack a shoe box for Operation Christmas Child as well as to take pictures at the photo booth. Brianna Stahl, junior social work major, shared, “I loved going, especially since there wasn’t an event last year. The snow was fun to play in and have a snowball fight.” She added: “The student performances stood out to me. I loved the styles of the groups that performed and they brought a fun, festive element to the event. I love Merry & Bright because it’s a great way to welcome the Christmas

season with CBU, while keeping Jesus at the center.” Another CBU student, Anna Harmon, junior liberal arts major, attended the event. She said, “Merry and Bright was full of festivities — there were so many activities to do and treats to eat. I always enjoy the snow that is on the Front Lawn. The only thing I missed was the band that played Christmas music two years ago.” Anthony Lulo, senior business administration major, said, “My favorite thing about the Christmas tree lighting was being able to spend time with my friends and make new friends along the way. It was also nice that CBU offered snacks and hot chocolate on the side; it definitely helped make the whole experience better and added to the ambience.” Senior business administration major Hannah Turner mentioned that her favorite part was “the tree lighting itself, when everyone lit the candles. It felt like Christmas was finally here and I got to spend that time with some of my closest friends.”
