When a client requests a copy of his or her file relating to the lawyer’s representa-
tion of the client, what, if anything, is the lawyer required to turn over consistent
with the lawyer’s ethical obligations? This article examines the ethics opinions
on this question from the Illinois State Bar Association and the American Bar As-
sociation, and also addresses the requirements set forth in the Illinois Code of
Civil Procedure.
