We must exercise, fuel our bodies with nutritious food to power that exercise, and manage our stress. Each habit directly affects the other. Sleep and Recovery The CDC recognizes insufficient sleep as a public health problem. It is estimated that 50 to 70 million U.S. adults suffer from sleep or wakefulness disorders. Regularly insufficient sleep leads to a host of health problems. Just like exercise and nutrition, a good night’s sleep is not optional; it is vital for our continued health and daily performance. Implementation At this point you may be thinking that you have no time to implement all of this advice. Coming full circle from the intro- duction of this article, to embrace fitness, you must challenge yourself. You will have to overcome common habits in our culture that seem normal and acceptable but are damaging. The road to fitness is not easily

professional standards. We may not yet have heard of examples of fitness failings resulting in negligent performance of professional duties, but it is not difficult to imagine a malnourished, under-slept, hyper-distracted attorney missing details that result in a malpractice lawsuit or a disciplinary complaint. Altering longstanding habits is dif- ficult. But I assure you that making these changes will bring you increased personal and professional happiness and success. The question you must answer is whether you wish to prioritize fitness as an overall lifestyle choice. From a day-to-day perspective, the habits described in this article are no more difficult to execute than those you may possess now; they are merely different choices than you may currently be making. If you have a number of poor habits, it will be more challenging to implement this advice at first . However, once you get over the hump and adjust to this new set of behaviors, they will seem no more difficult than your previous ones. Further, you will feel better equipped and more in control of your life than you ever have. If nothing else, I urge you to think of fitness as a professional responsibility. If you are not employing healthy habits, you are not permitting yourself to operate at your optimal level, and every activity that you perform is shortchanged, includ- ing your client obligations.
