CBA Record September-October 2023

A second plot in the book centers around Pinky’s quirky neighbor and what he is doing. Pinky refers to him as “TWO”; he who has no friends, and Pinky suspects he is up to no good. Pinky investigates him surreptitiously with some help from her friends, and the inquiry leads to potential questions of foreign espionage. A murder ties the two plotlines together, albeit a bit tenuously. Turow is a gifted writer when it comes to developing characters, exploring human relationships, and making mun dane legal issues engaging. In this novel it is not courtrooms that are featured, but an administrative hearing process by the police and fire boards. Suspect is an entertaining read, and we expect nothing less from Turow, but some of the plot and narrative, including a photo of two of the main characters that features heavily in the book’s outcome, is a bit suspect. But even with that, the book is worth reading. It will be interesting to see if Pinky Granum’s character repeats in a future novel. For now, enjoy the master storyteller’s latest work. I suspect you will enjoy the ride.

Suspect By Scott Turow Grand Central Publishing (2022) Reviewed by Daniel A. Cotter S ome fiction writers are prolific, coming out with a new book prac tically every year. James Patterson or John Grisham come to mind. When one thinks of the modern legal fiction genre, Chicago’s very own Scott Turow does not follow that prolific pattern. He has, however, published 13 works of fiction in his long career, going back to Presumed Innocent in 1986. In my opin ion, Turow is one of the greatest prose writers of our time in any genre. His latest work, Suspect, is a case in point. Presumed Innocent featured attor ney Sandy Stern and, over the years, we have seen Sandy as he aged and eventu ally retired. (Unlike some fiction series, Turow has not held his main charac

ters in age abeyance.) In The Last Trial, which we reviewed in the CBA Record, the 85-year-old Stern tries his final case. Suspect features Stern’s granddaughter, Pinky Granum, who made an appearance in The Last Trial. Pinky is not a lawyer, but a colorful, bisexual investigator who is “inked from neck to ankle and with a magenta Mohawk.” This book is a good read and involves accusations against the female police chief for sexual harassment. Three male offi cers have accused her of soliciting sex in exchange for promotions, but their cred ibility soon comes into question. There is a phone picture that Turow strings along throughout, and eventually we learn who the picture includes.
