law schools should expose students to the practice of law in rural areas and encour age students to focus on the humanity of law and the people they read about in cases. “Law has many tentacles. Being in a courtroom helps you learn the process, but that’s not all. You should use the law as the base of your thinking.” Never one to rest on her extensive lau rels, Burke plans to continue her advocacy. For the past 10 years, she has worked on a program called “After 22.” The program’s mission is to provide specialized academ
ics to individuals with special needs no matter what their age. In the future, she hopes to see a more unified court system – one in which all court partners, including judges, work together and communicate rather than working in silos. She encourages judges to remember that they may have been advocates but after donning their robes, they become peacemakers. As such, they must try to calm lawyers and have them get their point across without being dis agreeable.
Burke reminds us that we should all have empathy and kindness to those we serve and work with. She has led by example because “justice is not a place; it is a service.” Judge E. Kenneth Wright Jr. presides over the Circuit Court of Cook County’s Munici pal Department District 1 and is a long-time member of the CBA Record Editorial Board.
