PASSING by Nella Larson

What readers may expect to be a reflection of two women struggling through life attempting to pass (claiming a racial or ethnic identity that they do not possess) quickly turns into a book about envy – and not in the way you might think. While these two women think they are complete opposites, at their core, readers will see that they are indeed the same, and they essentially want the same thing: freedom. In the end one woman gets it while the other becomes more imprisoned than they were before. Grab this quick read and see what the cost of freedom truly is. WHILE JUSTICE SLEEPS by Stacey Abrams

In this first novel under her actual name (Abrams previously wrote novels under the name Selena Montgomery), Abrams has written a political thriller involving a sitting Supreme Court justice who has designated his clerk to be his guardian during a self-induced a coma. Although it gets off to a slow start, the plot picks up and mixes the political thriller with the legal genre. It is an entertaining look at the question of what happens when a lifetime-tenure officer of the United States government is not able to serve but has not made any indication of intent to resign. The book is entertaining and engaging, and I would not be surprised if the law clerk protagonist, Avery Keene, is seen in future works by Abrams.
