Companion animals are big business. According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), an estimated $72 billion was spent on companion animals (i.e., pets) in the United States last year. This was an increase over 2017, showing $29 billion spent on food, $17 billion spent on vet care, $15 billion spent on supplies/OTC medicine, and $6 bil- lion on services such as grooming and boarding. With the exception of live animal purchases, all categories of the pet industry continue to grow.
