YLS Special Issue: The Benefits of Belonging

percent were men.The discrepancy between male and female equity partners is even vaster. In 2015, women comprised approxi- mately 18 percent of equity partners, which is only 2 percent higher than in 2006. This income disparity, however, is not due to women working less hours. In fact, the median hours reported for a female equity partner in 2016 was 2,224 hours compared to 2,198 hours for male equity partners. There is no doubt that 2017 was the year of the woman. The statistics and studies outlined above, however, suggest that law schools and the legal profession can–and should–be doing more to make our profes- sion more inclusive of women. Although it is clear that many barriers still exist for women entering and remaining in the legal profession, it is also evident that progress has been made and more change can be expected. By recognizing these current issues and working together to generate solutions in this environment of female empowerment, the legal community can become a strong catalyst to ensure parity and inclusivity.
