YLS Special Issue: The Benefits of Belonging

After being in the Bar Show for the last two years, I’ve realized something impressive: that between its big band, sym- phony, chorus, the Bar Show, and its new @thebar podcast, the CBA offers so many opportunities for creative people to get involved and meet other talented lawyers with creative backgrounds. I finish watching Markham’s perfor- mance as the twinge of jealousy fades away. I am truly happy for her successes, as I am for other friends who continue to perform full time. More importantly, the CBA has given me a way to continue expressing

my creative performer side, while I work to further my law career. I’ve learned that I do not have to give up one of my life’s major passions to pursue the other. With the CBA’s help, I can do both. Mghnon Martin works as a law clerk at the Circuit Court of Cook County. She continues to sing and play throughout the Chicagoland area in her free time, is a two-year cast member of the CBA’s annual Bar Show, and is a co-host of the CBA’s new podcast, @thebar.

Thanks to all the organizers, participants and sponsors who came out to support the Young Lawyers Section’s annual fundraiser for The Chicago Bar Foundation on February 23. Everyone embraced the 70’s theme of Disco Nights while trying their luck at casino games and poker at the University Club. Event Chair Carl Newman and his committee raised over $15,000 to help further the CBF’s work in making the law accessible to all.
