The Chicago Bar Association Symphony Orchestra and Chorus provide unique opportunities for members of Chicago’s legal community to pursue their love of music.Their musical endeavors in turn provide opportunities for attorneys at all stages of their careers to interact with members of the judiciary outside the courtroom. Judges from both the state and federal courts have been a part of the CBASO and Chorus from the beginning. Cellist Julia Nowicki, who served as a Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County from 1984 to 2006, co- founded the CBASO along with cellist Susan Chernoff Huvard over thirty years ago. “Even though Susan and I had only the idea, I am very proud of my role in the creation of the orchestra. The CBASO is definitely the consequence of a successful collusion. Susan and I met as stand partners at the Do-It-Yourself-Messiah. We had a lot of fun. We thought starting an orchestra of lawyers was worth a try. We went to a CBA Board of Directors’ meeting to pitch the idea. By the time we arrived, we felt foolish and ridiculous. But we forged ahead anyway.” “Little did we know that Esther Rothstein would greet our idea with overwhelming enthusiasm. That is all we needed. Next thing we knew, we were interviewing candidates for a conductor at the old CBA dining room. (Don’t we all still miss it?) Two minutes into our interview of David Katz, we knew we had our man.
