Considering that last season didn’t quite meet expectations, Basco and her team have been working through the offseason to turn things around.

“We’ve been focusing on keeping heavy possession, using the midfield players and outside defenders as we progress up the field,” Basco said. “I’ve been pressing for the girls to put themselves in a goal-scoring opportunity to increase their chances of taking a shot.” With the season already underway, Basco is ready to see what her girls can do. “I’m most excited to see how this season plays out,” said Basco. “A large piece of my team is made up of juniors who have been playing with each other for years. I’ve been waiting for this group to grow to a higher level. So far, I think they have reached that point.”

SOCCER SEASON IS BACK FOR BRIDGE CITY AND THE GIRLS’ TEAM SEEKS TO BUILD UPON WHAT THEY LEARNED LAST YEAR. The Cardinals will be led by senior forward Leslie Carranza, the team’s leading scorer who averaged two goals per game. With Carranza at the front, coach Cori Basco has high hopes for her roster and believes that this is the year they begin to advance their goals. “My expectations this season are to have us move up to a higher district rank,” said Basco. “Also, I would like the girls to continue playing together outside of school. Leslie [Carranza] has been a big standout for us on the attack. I’m hoping we can extend her senior year past the regular season.”
