VALERIE BENTON , who put forth Eighth Amendment and Fourteenth Amend ment arguments in a petition for certiorari to the Supreme Court. “I wrote the initial draft of the petition for certiorari for Carl Lindsey, in Lindsey v.
Ohio , arguing that the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual pun ishments, and the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantees of due process and equal protec tion, bar the execution of individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, when their cognitive impairments and functional limitations mirror those of individuals with intellectual disability under the Supreme Court decision in Atkins v. Virginia .”
Her work was part of an internship this past summer with the Federal Public Defender’s Office. “This experience solidified for me what I want to do after I graduate, criminal appellate work, and helped me feel more confident that I will be able to succeed in that arena.” For these and other Chase students, being in classes is only the beginning of preparing to become lawyers.
