NABIP Engagement
Why NABIP? Two members, two journeys, one common goal
NABIP offers plenty of reasons to join, but what drives people to take that step — or come back year after year? For insurance professionals like Sislestina Samuels and Brenna Patterson, NABIP membership is more than a line on their LinkedIn — it’s a strategic move to deepen their expertise, expand their networks and have an authentic voice in our industry.
Starting fresh: Sislestina Samuels’ push for growth
While she’s still new to the organization, Samuels sees NABIP as a long-term resource. She’s particularly interested in networking opportunities and hands-on training that can help her expand into group benefits. Returning with purpose: Brenna Patterson and the power of advocacy Brenna Patterson is no stranger to NABIP. In fact, this is her third time returning. But she doesn’t see that as a sign of uncertainty. Rather, it’s proof of the organization’s ongoing relevance. “I keep coming back because the information and connections I get here are unmatched,” she says. Starting in insurance in 2008, Patterson worked on the carrier side before transitioning into a brokerage. Now a benefits account manager in Oregon, she leverages NABIP’s continuing education, networking and legislative advocacy to stay ahead. “The legislative side is what really keeps me engaged,” Patterson says. “There are so many new people making decisions about health and benefits policy, and they don’t always have industry experience. NABIP gives us a way to educate them, to make sure
Samuels knows the power of professional organizations. She spent two decades as a member of the National Association of Realtors but never considered joining NABIP — until now.
they understand the real-world impact of their choices.” Beyond advocacy, Patterson sees NABIP as a practical tool for professional development. She plans to pursue her REBC designation and take advantage of the membership discounts on certification courses. A membership that evolves with you For both Samuels and Patterson, NABIP isn’t a static benefit — it’s a resource that grows with them. Whether they’re looking for guidance or a returning professional using it as a platform for advocacy, they believe NABIP offers something deeper than just networking and education. It’s a space where professionals at every stage of their careers can connect, contribute and build something bigger than themselves. “It’s not just about staying informed. It’s about being part of the conversation that shapes our industry,” says Patterson.
In addition to her Real Estate license, Samuels has
a growing insurance business in
Metro Atlanta. She’s focusing on Medicare, ACA plans and life insurance, but she wants
more. NABIP, she realized, could be the key to that next step. “I’ve been in the business for years, but I never took the time to join,” Samuels says. “This year, I knew I needed to be part of an organization that represents my industry.” “What I need right now is training and access to people who’ve already built the kind of business I want,” she adds. “I don’t just want to figure it out on my own — I want to learn from those who’ve done it.”
