Melanie McLaughlin expands her benefits expertise with REBC certification

multitasking — like folding laundry while listening to lessons. It took about seven months to complete, but since I started with topics relevant to my job, I could immediately apply what I learned. That kept me motivated, even when things got busy. What would you say to someone considering the REBC? Do it! The program is manageable, even with a full-time job, and the content is practical. For me, the understanding I gained — especially from courses like the ACA and self-funding modules — has been invaluable. The quizzes and applied learning along the way make it easy to retain what you study. It’s 100% worth the investment in yourself. “ ” I started with topics relevant to my job. I could immediately apply what I learned.

With a background as an elementary music teacher, Melanie McLaughlin, senior benefits technology specialist at Intrepid Benefits, is passionate about understanding the “why” behind her work so she can be a better educator. When McLaughlin, based in the Dallas area, transitioned into the benefits industry, she quickly realized the value of deepening her benefits expertise. Recently earning her Registered Employee Benefits Consultant (REBC) designation, McLaughlin shared her journey and why she encourages others to pursue it. What led you to pursue your REBC? Early in my career, I was overwhelmed by the complexity of benefits packages. I wanted to know more than just how to input data — I wanted to understand what it all meant. The REBC program gave me the tools to make sense of key concepts, like ACA reporting and self funding timelines, which directly improved how I manage systems like Employee Navigator for our clients. It’s helped me provide better support and think strategically about how we serve our groups.

How did you balance earning your REBC with your job and life responsibilities? It wasn’t easy, but Intrepid supported me by covering the program costs and letting me set my own pace. I worked on courses after hours, sometimes
