Jennifer Muehlhausen pursues a robust benefits education

A NABIP member for several years now, Jennifer Muehlhausen, assistant vice president, active enrollment at the Nebraska Bankers Association, works in the voluntary employee benefits department for the Lincoln-based association. Recently, she earned her REBC through NABIP after completing the year-long course. What led you to get your REBC certification? I work with health/vision/and dental benefits along with life and disability coverages and was looking for a way to gain more knowledge. I didn’t have an insurance background when I started with the association, so I felt I could better serve our customers with more education. Looking on the NABIP website, I found the Registered Employee Benefits Consultant Designation. I reviewed it and thought this would benefit me and help me understand more about the ACA and other laws. So, I presented it to my supervisor and to the president, and they said, ‘Yes, let’s go ahead and have you sign up.’ What was the time commitment like for you? The program works by having four mandatory courses and three electives that you can choose from. Each course contains one to 12 modules, each lasting one to one and a half hours.

I’m hoping this leads to more growth within our organization, more opportunities, and I hope it opens the door to taking more of a deeper dive into insurance. It’s all pertinent information, and being able to utilize it within your role in your company is huge. The REBC course gave me a better understanding. You have one year to complete the course. Toward the end, I was probably designating about two hours a day to the course studies and then about two hours for the final exam that you have to take in order to pass that. It’s very comprehensive. How do you expect having your REBC to affect your career? I feel very accomplished and
