As children, both were re quired to take art and music classes, which have brought them the lifelong pleasure of creativity and culture. Their required classes included Chinese callig raphy, which Mei continues to do. They married in Taiwan, where his father was dean at a middle school, and his grandfa ther was a Buddhist priest who was edu cated in Japan. He has two brothers and two sisters, all artists. Mei has a brother and a sister, and is the granddaughter of Taiwan’s first woman senator. Mei won awards for her art while she was a stu dent in a private school. Her mother was artistic and was a dentist who moved to Halifax, Canada, did research and later moved to Ottawa. Her uncle had taken family members out of Taiwan one by one, due to fears of a Chinese takeover.

As a computer programmer analyst, he did machine lan guage coding and design in Unix and Assembler. Sony was one of many firms that were worried about planning for Y2K due to memory space in the computers.

Justin sang and played violin; he also went to Juilliard, where he studied under Sally Thomas. Both sons, also art ists, have moved into the workforce in other fields. While Tenn has been an active art ist for 20 years, his field was computer software, working for 20 years for Sony until he retired in 2005. He also worked for Sony’s music division, enjoying tick ets to concerts by Sony-label musicians.

After his computer career, he went to local art schools. Subsequently, he has taught at community schools in Emerson and Bergenfield. Among the places he has taught are the Tenafly Se nior Center and at the Rockland Center for the Arts in West Nyack, New York. His artwork has been seen in librar ies statewide and in banks around the county. He has taught moms after they dropped their children off at school. Mei says that a lot of young people want to learn art so they have a hobby after they retire. Tenn recommends hobbies for retirement years.
