LANDSCAPING Ideas for Big Yards By Angela Smith

Having a home in the country means you have a much larger yard to maintain, especially in the warmer months. But a bigger yard means more space and flexibility to customize it how you want it. Before you decide what you want to do, ask yourself some questions:

Here are a few tips on how to make your yard stand out without breaking the bank. Plant perennials. These beautiful plants (Allium, Sage, Baptisia, Buddleia, etc.) return every year and save you the added cost of planting every season. They are also wonderful highlights for the front or back yard. Add gravel to your garden area. Gravel requires little to no maintenance and it’s inexpensive. Put gravel down where there’s more traffic to give it a modern look.

Turn trash into treasure. Old copper, wood scraps and other “throw away items” can be recycled and made into furniture or décor for your yard. Use your imagination. Make your own fire pit with stone and brick. It might take a little leg work, but it’s an affordable option that can be enjoyed by you and your guests. Add solar lights to your walkway. These lights run off of solar energy so they will not only save you money, but they will light your walkway and add some safety in the dark.

Spruce up your entryway. Touch up the paint, add some potted plants and wreaths to add some extra class and curb appeal. Simple upkeep. It may seem like a no-brainer, but no addition or fancy flowers will make your yard beautiful if the grass is overgrown and there are weeds everywhere. Keeping your lawn mowed at least twice a month and pulling weeds regularly will keep your yard clean and beautiful.

• Do you want some added curb appeal?

• What purpose do you want your backyard to serve? Entertainment, relaxation, a garden or a mixture of everything? • What is your budget?
