Toni Sorenson once said, “Spring is far more than just a changing of seasons; it’s a rebirth of the spirit.” As a native of north Texas, I am used to the cooler winter temperatures. I have experienced a snowy season once or twice in my life and as much as I enjoyed it, nothing beats the spring season. Seeing the rebirth of trees, flowers blossom and yes-the time change, does something to my spirit. It rejuvenates me and gives me the jolt that I need to keep pushing towards greatness. Educators and students-we are in the home stretch! In just a few short months, we will conclude the 2023-2024 school year. Everything you’ve worked so hard for is now

coming to fruition. Many of our senior students have made their decision on their plans after high school graduation. Whether that be a two- or four-year college, the Armed Forces or career, we know that our students can and will be successful. I encourage you to cherish each day. Time moves so swiftly and before you know it, you’re off into the real world. Our hope as your Alief ISD family is that we have prepared you for success. Alief ISD Family & Friends, As the frost of winter begins to thaw, the fields and courts of Alief Independent School District (ISD) are abuzz with the anticipation of spring sports. It’s a season that brings not only the promise of new beginnings but also a time to reflect on the collective efforts that make these opportunities possible for our young athletes. At the heart of Alief ISD’s athletic programs are our student-athletes, whose dedication and drive set the stage for the spring season. Their commitment to excellence, both in academics and athletics, exemplifies the spirit of our community. As they lace up their cleats, tighten their goggles, or secure their helmets, they’re not just preparing for competition; they’re embracing the life lessons that sports uniquely provide. The importance of athletics within our district cannot be overstated. Beyond the physical benefits, sports teach invaluable skills such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, and resilience. These lessons extend far beyond the playing field, helping to shape well-rounded individuals prepared to tackle life’s challenges.

Integral to the success of our programs are our coaches, who serve not only as instructors but also as mentors, guiding our athletes through the highs and lows of competition. Their dedication to developing both the skills and character of their players is the backbone of Alief’s athletic success. They invest countless hours planning, training, and strategizing, all in the pursuit of creating not just better athletes, but better people. Yet, our sports programs have incredible contributions from many others, often working behind the scenes. Our custodial teams ensure our facilities are clean, safe, and ready for action, setting the stage for every practice and game. Maintenance staff work tirelessly, often unnoticed, to keep our fields, courts, and equipment in top condition, ensuring our athletes have the best possible environment to compete. Our nutrition department that feeds our athletes and makes sure they have the fuel they need to compete at the highest level. Our bus drivers keep us safe as we travel to and from our athletic events. Ticket sellers, bag checkers, and clock workers bring order and structure to our events, ensuring games run smoothly and fans enjoy a seamless experience. Their roles are crucial in creating an atmosphere of excitement and competition that defines high school sports. The Alief Police Department ensures the safety and security of all participants and spectators, allowing the focus to remain on the game. Their presence is a comforting assurance that our community’s well-being is always a priority. Lastly, the Alief Administration and School Board’s unwavering support empowers our athletic programs to thrive. Their commitment to providing resources, encouragement, and guidance is a testament to the value placed on athletics within our district. Their vision for a holistic educational experience, where academics and athletics complement each other, is the foundation upon which our programs are built. As we usher in the spring sports season, let us celebrate not only the athletes and coaches who stand in the spotlight but also the entire community that supports them. From the custodians to the administration, each person plays a vital role in the success of our programs. Together, we create an environment where our student-athletes can achieve their full potential, both on and off the field. Greetings! I am a proud member of the Alief ISD team as well as the proud parent of an Alief ISD student-athlete. I came to Alief in 2019 looking for a fresh start, and I have received far more than I expected when I was hired as an HCC Dual Credit English teacher at Hastings High School. I was familiar with the Alief community’s vibrant, multicultural character, ethnic cuisine, and reputation for producing successful entrepreneurs, professionals, athletes, and entertainers, but when I arrived, I found a community that reminded me in many ways of my hometown, Port Arthur, Texas. The Alief area has a unique, energetic small town feel, and Alief ISD is truly a hub for the community; providing opportunities for students to connect with others from various and diverse backgrounds for academic, athletic, and fine arts enrichment.

I am a part of a dedicated team of professionals, constantly looking for ways to prepare and empower our students to achieve their dreams. My daughter, Melinda, has benefited from high quality instruction in advanced academics classes as well as our state-of-the art Career and Technology Center, which has solidified her interest in the field of engineering. Melinda plays volleyball and basketball, but it is quite common to see coaches from the football, soccer, or track and field teams coming out to support them at their games. The Alief ISD administrative team is extremely community oriented, attending fine arts events, festivals, and athletic events throughout the district and even on the road. My daughter came to Alief Hastings High School during COVID in the fall of 2020, bright-eyed and hopeful for a future that included playing college basketball. Thanks to the support system and guidance she received from her head coach, Corey Brotherton, and his assistants, the Hastings Athletic department, her teachers, and the Alief ISD Athletics department, she has earned the chance to fulfill those dreams at Georgia Southern University, where she plans to play college basketball on a full scholarship and study engineering. It gives me a unique feeling of pride to say that the people who helped my daughter are also my co-workers. My experience as an Alief employee/parent has confirmed to me why so many Alief employees continue to choose Alief schools for their own children: because we truly believe that Alief is the best choice for our families. Melinda will graduate from Hastings in the spring of 2024, but I will remain in Alief to continue working with the students in Alief to make sure that we give them the best educational opportunities possible.

She learned from her sister, who ran at Elsik, while she is leading the way for her twin younger brothers – Cordell and Cornell. “We all started running in middle school and haven’t looked back,” she said. “We all motivate each other and compete in a fun way. The sport has made me mentally strong and keeps me in great shape.” Juniors Cordell and Cornell are inspired by their older sister. “There are times when I don’t want to get up and go to practice,” Cordell said. “She never lets me miss. She has influenced me mentally in approaching the sport and taking it more seriously.” “It’s good to look up to somebody,” Cornell said. “She just happens to be my older sister. She inspires me.” Iron sharpens iron, which has made the Furlows razor sharp.

SPEED IS THE FAMILY BUSINESS AT THE FURLOW HOME, AND BUSINESS IS GOOD. Elsik's Tybriune Furlow is the one of the fastest sprinters in all of Alief ISD after advancing to the Regionals in 2023 in the open 100 and 200-meters. What will the senior do for an encore? “I’ve just been hard at work since last season,” she said. “Losing doesn’t feel good, so that’s why I’m so motivated at practice.” On the senior’s to-do list in 2024 is to run a 10.6 in the 100-meters and a 24.1 in the 200-meters. “I know those are college-level times, but that is the goal for me,” she said. “I want to run in college, so I know what I have to run. I also know I need to maintain a high GPA, so I’m always on the Honor Roll.” How about that for a role model?

WHEN ONE SEES THE STATURE AND PROWESS ON THE FIELD THAT JACOB ROMERO DISPLAYS, IT COULD BE ASSUMED THAT HE’S BEEN PLAYING BALL HIS WHOLE LIFE. The contrary happens to be the case for the Hastings’ junior outfielder. “I actually started playing pretty late, when I was 14,” he said. “I fell in love with the game when the Astros won the World Series back in 2017. My favorite player to watch was definitely George Springer, which is part of the reason why I became an outfielder. “But, I try to model my game after Mookie Betts because he’s one of the top players in the MLB, despite not being one of the bigger players. He still competes with the big guys, which is really impressive and he serves as a good model for me.” Romero certainly caught on quickly, considering his freshman year performance earned him a first-team, all-district nod. He was on the trajectory for another all-district performance last year, however, he would suffer a season-ending injury. him for the remainder of his sophomore campaign. “It was pretty rough,” said Romero. “After everything happened, I wasn’t able to be out there with the guys, doing what I wanted to do. But, as soon as I healed up, I went right back to it. I’ve been grinding to recover to the form I had before the injury.” Now that he has made the steady recovery – at the behest of his coaches – Romero has a one-track mind. “I’m hoping to have one heck of a season... even better than

my freshman year,” he laughed. “I’ve been working my butt off all Summer, Fall and Winter to get back. The workouts, hitting and throwing practice, and consistent recuperation have all led me to this. I’m going to make sure it was worth it.” He’ll have his work cut out for him, as he and his Bears are tasked with competing in a crowded District 23-6A. Night in and night out, Hastings will face likes of perennial State contenders such as the 2023 Finalist Pearland, along with Alvin and Strake Jesuit. But, given his steadfast determination and positive disposition, Romero is sure to put on a show as he returns to lead Hastings in their Spring campaign. “As an athlete, I’m proud to represent Alief – especially as a baseball player,” he said. “Not too many people play here, let alone exceed high expectations. So, every time I step on that field, I’m going to make sure I play with pride and passion. I’ll be going 100-percent, no matter who we play or where we compete.” With a mindset like that, first-team, all-district should be the minimum for Romero in 2024.

I’ve met so many great people doing so many different activities.” Outland is in the National Honor Society, she’s the secretary of the FFA Chapter, she pitches for the softball team and she’s also the school mascot. “First, I love animals so that is why I got into FFA,” she said. “I wanted to be a vet, but I’ve changed my career path a little. I don’t raise animals, but I just love being involved with them. I do the rabbit tours with little kids and I dress up like a rabbit, because I have mascoting experience.” A few years back, Outland heard a message from above. “I was listening to the announcement about being the mascot, and I went for it,” she said. “I’ve really gotten into it. I’ve also interned for the Space Cowboys (Astros minor league team) with their mascot. She has been great. She’s given me advice on improving my performances, she helped me repair and sew my outfit and has been a great mentor. I’ve been able to

Fostering Resilience, Adaptability, and a Lifelong Love for Learning Innovation & Collaboration

This program provides students with real-world access and experiences that serve them for a lifetime. Students enrolled in Journalism write in a variety of forms for a variety of audiences and purposes. Students plan, draft, and complete written compositions on a regular basis, carefully examining their papers for clarity, engaging language, and the correct use of the conventions and mechanics of written English. In Journalism, students are expected to write in a variety of forms and for a variety of audiences and purposes. Students will become analytical consumers of media and technology to enhance their communication skills. Published work of professional journalists, technology, and visual and electronic media are used as tools for learning as students create, clarify, critique, write, and produce effective communications. Students enrolled in Journalism will learn journalistic traditions, research self selected topics, write journalistic texts, and learn the principles of publishing. Students may use their skills and talents to gather information, conduct interviews, and write news articles or stories for their school newspaper or website, or yearbook. Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) provides opportunities for future leaders to receive training in leadership skills, teamwork, discipline, and character development. Students participate in physical fitness training, including exercises, drills, and activities to improve strength, endurance, and overall fitness. Community service projects such as volunteering at local events, assisting with disaster relief efforts, or supporting veterans' organizations. JROTC students learn and practice military drill and ceremony techniques, including marching, formations, salutes, and flag etiquette. JROTC also provides the opportunity to participate in field training exercises, which can include map reading, orienteering, teamwork challenges, and

these programs, Alief ISD has built a strong and thriving fine arts community. The success of Alief ISD's Fine Arts programs can be seen in the achievements of its students. Our elementary music and art programs are our foundational starting points for all fine arts programs in Alief. One hundred percent of our elementary students participate in these programs weekly. Performing provides students with the chance to showcase their hard work and talent. Band, choir, and orchestra students showcase their talents in front of an audience. This can include festivals, parades, recitals, competitions, and community events. High School music students who receive Superior Ratings, advance to the State level in band, choir, and orchestra solo and ensemble contests. The students selected to perform in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State concerts are chosen for this prestigious honor through a competitive process held across the state at District, Region, and Area levels. All-State is the highest honor a music student in the state of Texas can receive while in high school. Over 70,000 students initially enter the TMEA All State competitive process - 1,875 students are selected to perform in 18 All-State ensembles - All-State performances. The Speech and Debate programs at Alief ISD's middle and high schools are rigorous and rewarding. Students compete in multiple Improvisation, and Solo Acting, at the annual Middle School Speech, Debate, and Drama Tournament. Students also hone their skills in Original Oratory, Readers Theatre, Solo Improvisation, Duet Acting, LipSync, Prose, Pantomime, Poetry, Vocal Solo, Storytelling, and Original Spoken Word Poetry. Through innovative projects and collaborations, students are able to apply their learning and make meaningful connections across various platforms. the prestigious District of Distinction Award for five consecutive years. The Theatre Arts programs in Alief ISD also have a strong presence. They participate annually at the Texas Thespian Festival, where they have produced National Qualifiers, MainStage Callbacks, MainStage Finalists, and Nationally qualified duets. Scholarships for theatre education and theatre directing are also awarded, providing students with opportunities to further their passion for theatre. Alief ISD's Fine Arts programs offer a diverse range of opportunities for students to explore and excel in various artistic disciplines. With a commitment to equity, meaningful relationships, respect, growth mindset, and innovation, Alief ISD provides students with a supportive and enriching environment to develop their artistic talents. The achievements and recognition received by the students in these programs are a testament to the dedication and excellence of the Alief ISD Fine Arts community. Learning (DEAL). The purpose of DEAL is to promote student achievement, and to enhance student learning, promote success, and progress in the art of dance. The Texas Dance Educators Association All State Dance Team is composed of dancers representing schools from across the state of Texas. This year’s ASDT was the largest with over 200 dancers, participating in an exciting convention experience that included dance workshops, leadership training, master classes, and networking with other students. Visual arts students in Alief ISD have excelled in various competitions and awards. They have received top honors, including Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mentions, in the National Scholastic Art Awards. The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Art Awards have recognized Alief ISD students as Class Champions, Best of Show, and recipients of the Gold Medal award. High school and middle school art students also compete in UIL regulated events, such as the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) and Jr. VASE, respectively. Elementary and intermediate students participate in the Texas Elementary Art Meet (TEAM). These competitions provide a standard of excellence and celebrate exemplary student achievement in the visual arts. The Alief ISD visual arts program has been honored with

simulated military scenarios, giving students a glimpse into what the future may hold for them as military personnel. Alief’s middle, intermediate and high school cheer teams may compete locally, regionally, or nationally, but their main purpose is typically to cheer for sporting events and encourage audience participation. Cheerleading is a year-round activity, starting with tryouts during the spring semester of the preceding school year. Teams attend organized summer cheerleading camps and practices to improve skills and create routines for competition. Student cheerleaders may compete with recreational-style routines at competitions year round, participate in parades, and community festivals. High school cheerleaders usually have varsity and junior varsity squads. High school cheerleading contains aspects of school spirit as well as competition. The school spirit aspect of cheerleading involves cheering, supporting, and "hyping up" the crowd at football games, basketball games, or Alief community events. The dance programs promote district-wide team collaboration, provide master Dance Master classes, and expose students to the professional world of dance.
