ALDINE HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTER BRIANNA PONCE IS A STATE CHAMPION!

Aldine ISD had three high schools that earned national, state and Houston-ar ea rankings in U.S. News’ 2023-24 Best High School Report, which was released this spring. Victory Early College High School, under the direction of Principal Phyl lis Cormier, was ranked 404th in the national rankings and was ranked 53rd in Texas and 13th among Houston-area high schools. Victory was ranked No. 1 among Aldine ISD high schools. Blanson CTE High School, under the direction of Principal Ben Ibarra, was ranked 220th in Texas, 2,211th in the nation and 70th among Houston-area Aldine ISD is home to a state champion! Aldine High School senior powerlifter Brianna Ponce brought home the gold medal in the unequipped division (165 pounds) recently at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Associa tion’s State Tournament. Ponce lifted 280 pounds in the squat, 140 pounds in the bench press, and 355 pounds in the dead lift for a total of 775 pounds. Brianna becomes the first student-ath lete in the history of Aldine ISD to be crowned a state champion in powerlifting. Not bad for a program that’s only been in existence for two years. Brianna and her teammates Paola Saenz and Liz Carrizales finished fourth overall as a team at the state tourney. Carrizales, who finished first at re gionals as a junior, finished fifth in her weight class while Saenz placed ninth in her weight class. Power lifting coach Todd Polvado said Brianna saved her best performance of the year for the most important meet of the year.

Pictured with Brianna Ponce, second from left, are head coach Todd Polvado and team mates Paola Saenz and Liz Carrizales. The Aldine team finished fourth at state.

“Brianna was just phenomenal,” said Polvado, who has been coaching power lifting for 13 years. “She had a great day. She hit all of her lifts. She came in prepared. She also set a state record for the dead lift.” Polvado said Brianna has a strong work ethic, which is key to being a successful power lifter. “She’s a hard worker,” he said. “She’s mature and is a self-motivator with high character. You can trust her to work out on her own and she’ll do it (workout) right. A power lifter has to be consis high schools. Blanson was ranked No. 2 among Aldine ISD high Schools. Carver High School, under the direction of Principal La’Keishia Williams, was ranked 568th among Texas high school, 6,447th in the nation and 132nd among Houston-area high schools. Carver was ranked No. 3 among AISD high schools. The 2023-24 edition of the Best High Schools includes a numerical ranking of nearly all public high schools nation wide, totaling more than 18,000 based on multiple objective data sources. Data used to rank high schools includes, enrollment, graduation rates, student body demographics, location, type of

She was very determined.” In addition to the gold medal she won at state, Brianna also won medals at five other meets. “It meant a lot,” she said, about being a state champion. “It made me realize that if I work for it, it could be accom plished. I started lifting to get stronger and I just thought I’d give power lifting a try. I’m glad I did.” And it certainly worked out for Brianna. school, state assessment results and Advanced Placement (AP) and Interna tional Baccalaureate (IB) tests. SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Aldine Community, The end of the school year is finally here! It's a period of ecstatic highs for students anxious for summer fun in the sun to begin. Others find themselves between mixed emotions of anxiety and excitement transitioning to the next stage in their future. I hope you know how proud we are of our Aldine Community. From graduating from prekindergarten to high school, excelling in academic competitions, and participating in community service, you have all hit significant milestones in your lives. These achievements are not just individual triumphs but a testament to our community's strength and unwavering commitment. Your collective efforts in academics, sports, arts, and community engagement have made these milestones possible. Your contributions are invaluable and integral to our success. Continue meeting your goals and living out your dreams.

President

DR. KIMBERLEY BOOKER

PAUL SHANKLIN Vice President

Secretary

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of our staff members and stakeholders. Your invaluable contributions have made this school year a resounding success. Your unwavering support, whether through volunteering, attending events, or simply being there for our students, has been instrumental in our achievements. Your dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. Once again, we have demonstrated the power of collaboration in providing our students with many choices and opportunities. Your support is not just appreciated, it is the backbone of our success. As we forge our journey of excellence, we know that we are not alone but part of a strong and supportive community. As we wrap up another successful year, I am thrilled to share a snapshot of our collective achievements. The most significant development of the '23-'24 academic year was the Aldine ISD community's approval of the three Bond 2023 propositions, a monumental step in the district's history. This approval not only endorses the district's mission of providing a rigorous educational experience but also underscores the community's active and crucial role in shaping the future of our schools. A Bond Oversight Committee, comprising community members and financial experts, will diligently oversee the district's bond program, ensuring its timely, quality, and budget-compliant completion. The initial projects include the reconstruction of Carver High School, Aldine Middle School, and Lane School, and the establishment of the Education and Performing Arts Center. Each community member's contribution is crucial in realizing these plans. The List of Highlights and Points of Pride is not exhaustive but a glimpse into the many remarkable things happening across our district. Please take a moment to reflect on these accomplishments and see how we are making significant strides in our strategic plan. 2023-2024 Highlights & Points of Pride Headlines • District Announces it will Launch Eisenhower College Prep at Eisenhower Ninth and Eisenhower HS in Fall of 2023 • AISD's Finance Department Earns Certificate of Achievement From GFOA • Over 50 Aldine ISD High School Students Named 2023 College Board National Recognition Program Awardees • Aldine ISD to Launch Second Unified Champion Basketball Games • Blanson CTE High School Named to Prestigious AP School Honor Roll for 2023 • La Promesa: NewSchools' Video Features How the School Builds a Culture Where Students Excel

AISD NEWS FEATURE ALDINE EDUCATION FOUNDATION CELEBRATES HISTORIC SCHOLARSHIP CEREMONY

In a landmark event, the Aldine Educa tion Foundation (AEF) hosted its annual scholarship ceremony during school hours for the first time, ensuring all students could participate, given the many who work after school. Despite initial concerns, the ceremony saw an impressive turnout, with over 200 families and loved ones in attendance at M.O. Campbell Educational Center. The event was also broadcast live online, garnering more than 500 views. The ceremony commenced with a pri vate Meet and Greet in the M.O. Camp bell foyer, where scholarship recipients and donors mingled. A highlight of the day was a heartwarming surprise from Whataburger—a commemorative table tent proudly declaring ‘Graduate 2024’ for each student. Linda Flores Olson, Director of Aldine Education Foundation, welcomed at tendees, remarking on the significance of this momentous occasion: “There are few things as exciting as new begin nings, and starting college is definitely one of the biggest new beginnings for graduating seniors. Congratulations!” The event featured a patriotic Colors presentation by Aldine HS JROTC and a pledge led by Aurelio Manriques from Avalos PTECH. Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney, Superintendent of Aldine ISD, extended Fourteen Aldine ISD high school students were selected earlier this school year to join Leadership High School (LHS), a leadership development and diversity awareness program from Lone Star Col lege (LSC) for sophomore and junior high school students who attend public school and live in the LSC service area. UNSTOPPABLE ON THE DIAMOND: ALDINE HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL DOMINATES DISTRICT WITH 12-1 RECORD

The Aldine High School baseball team is on an unstoppable journey this season, dominating district play with a 12-1 record and claiming the coveted number-one spot. But it’s not just their victories on the field that are making waves; it’s the unwavering leadership and character exemplified by their team captains, Jordan Toups and Julio Gon zalez, that are truly setting them apart. Coach Toups, the driving force behind the team’s success, recently took a moment to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of his two team captains. “This year, they have truly been the definition of what senior leadership is all about,” Coach Toups stated. “What I admire about their character this year is the selflessness they have displayed.” Indeed, Jordan and Julio have embod ied the essence of leadership, demon strating humility in victories and taking ownership of the team’s losses. Their actions speak volumes, inspiring their teammates to strive for excellence both on and off the field. Coach Toups shared insight into the team’s mindset com ing into the season, emphasizing their Aldine ISD Police Officer Ariel Holliday has been named the inaugural recip ient of the Officer of the Year Award from the Houston Area Police Chiefs Association for her outstanding work as the community outreach officer for the Aldine ISD Police Department. Some of the initiatives she has undertaken have been: Paint the Convert, Trunk-or-Treat, Donuts With a Cop, and Shop With a Cop are only a few examples of her work. At the state level, Officer Holliday was honored with the Blauer Police Officer of the Year award at the 2024 Texas Police Chiefs Association Conference for her work with the Aldine ISD Police Department. The conference was re cently held in Galveston.

determination to prove the naysayers wrong. “We set out this year to prove all the doubters wrong,” he declared. “When the preseason rankings came out from Texas High School Baseball, we felt an extreme level of disrespect not being on the list.” Julio Gonzalez and Jordan Toups, standout players for the Aldine Mustangs, have both received scholarship offers to play baseball at the collegiate level. Gonzalez has offers from junior colleges, while Toups has been scouted by Division I schools. As the team reflected on a success ful season, Julio Gonzalez shared his thoughts: “I am very proud of this group of guys and how hard we worked to get to where we are right now. It has been an honor leading this amazing group of guys who are willing to strive to get bet ter every day. We did our job in district and made history.” Jordan Toups echoed similar sentiments. He expressed his pride in wearing the Aldine colors and his role in guiding the team to success. “I’m honored to be able to play and lead this team. We worked hard all year, and I’m proud of what

we’ve accomplished during district” said Toups. Their leadership and talent have been pivotal in the team’s success. Fuelled by this perceived slight, Coach Toups utilized it as motivational fuel, plastering the locker room and dug outs with reminders of their underdog status. Instead of letting it weigh them down, the team embraced the role of the villain, rallying together and forging an unbreakable bond grounded in accountability and camaraderie. As the season progressed, Aldine High School’s baseball team continued to defy expectations, fueled by the leadership of Jordan Toups and Julio Gonzalez. Their commitment to excel lence, coupled with their unwavering character, served as an inspiration to all who witnessed their journey. With their sights set on even greater achieve ments, this team is poised to leave an indelible mark on the annals of high school baseball history.

CLIPPERS AND CONVERSATIONS: A STUDENT-TEACHER VENTURE

holds profound significance. He empha sizes the importance of equipping young minds with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship. Reflecting on his motivation, Smith emphasizes the dire need to bridge the gap between class room education and real-world appli cation, particularly for the underserved communities he serves as a teacher. He stresses the transformative potential of hands-on learning, envisioning a future where students build businesses and revitalize their communities through newfound skills and knowledge. Throughout their journey, Smith has witnessed Zach’s transformation from a beginner to a proficient tradesman and aspiring entrepreneur. Despite initial challenges, Zach’s ambition and recep tiveness to guidance propelled him. As a mentor figure similar to a father figure, Smith takes pride in Zach’s growth, remembering the gratification from witnessing his development over time. Beyond the immediate goal of launching Exclusive Fadez, Smith emphasizes the broader mission of preparing students for the complexities of life beyond academia. “It’s not just about passing them through school,” he asserts, “but about making a tangible impact in our community and in the lives of our youth.” Through their collaborative efforts, Smith and Zach are sowing seeds of empowerment and self-sufficiency, nur turing a generation of individuals poised to thrive in an ever-changing world, one hammer, install, appointment, and haircut at a time.

can engage in candid conversations about life’s challenges and triumphs. Henry’s journey to entrepreneurship is deeply intertwined with the support and guidance he received from his father, and business partner, Mr. Peter Smith. Reflecting on his upbringing, Henry credits his father for instilling in him not just the skills of barbering but also the values of hard work. His collaboration with Smith has blossomed into a dynam ic partnership built on mutual respect and shared goals. Henry chuckled when asked about his and Smiths’ relation ship, “Smith is my dog.” Smith stood in the background smiling while nodding his head. Together, they envision the barbershop as more than just a business but as a vehicle for meaningful change in the lives of those they serve. With a commitment to community-building at its core, Henry’s ultimate ambition is to evolve the barbershop model, expanding its reach and impact to empower even more individuals on their personal and professional journeys. Peter Smith, the veteran educator at Eisenhower High School and plumber, electrician, cabinet maker, and wall fin isher, has emerged as a pivotal figure in Henry’s vision of opening a barbershop, embodying the essence of mentorship and hands-on guidance. It all began when Zach shared his dream of obtain ing a barber license and founding his own establishment during one of Smith’s astronomy classes. Recognizing the po tential in Zach’s dream, Smith embarked on a voyage of community empower ment, imparting business insight and

In a story that blends sports, education, and entrepreneurship, the journey of former Eisenhower High School quarter back and standout student Zacchaeus Henry takes a remarkable turn. Teaming up with Peter Smith, a respected Physics and Astronomy teacher at Eisenhower, Henry embarked on an inspiring venture that transcends the traditional paths of the student-teacher relationship. Their partnership culminated in establishing a unique barbershop, Exclusive Fadez, located at 4444 Cypress Creek Park way. Their partnership is not just about grooming hair but about promoting community and creating opportunities. Henry’s journey into opening his bar bershop extends far beyond personal ambition; it’s rooted in a deep desire to impact his community positively. Beyond simply pursuing self-goals and carving out a career path, Henry’s vision encom passes a broader mission: to inspire and uplift the youth while supporting local entrepreneurs. He sees his barbershop not just as a place for haircuts but as a hub for promoting a positive mindset and effecting meaningful change within the community. Henry aims to create a space where “individuals from all walks of life can come together, share their stories, and collectively strive for prog ress by providing a platform for dialogue and connection.” As a former standout quarterback, Henry understands the sig nificance of community spaces in bridg ing divides and fostering understanding. He views the barbershop as a unique avenue for outreach, where individuals ranging from police officers to athletes

From conceptualizing the layout to rewiring the en tire suite, Smith has been instrumental in trans forming an old space into a vibrant new barbershop named Exclusive Fadez.
