Former Nimitz High School star quar terback X’Zavier Bloodsaw had quite a career at Texas College. In three seasons, he threw for 8,107 yards, threw 81 touchdown passes, rushed for another 3,425 yards and 12 scores and, to this day, holds all of the major quarterback records at the Tyler school, with the exception of yards in a game. Bloodsaw, now an Assistant Principal at Teague Middle School, was honored for his outstanding collegiate career by recently being inducted in the Texas College Hall of Fame (HOF). Bloodsaw and his fellow inductees were members of the school’s inaugural HOF Class. Bloodsaw, humble and soft spoken, said he was touched by the honor. “This honor means everything to me,” Bloodsaw said. “This is a true testament that hard work pays off. I know that it is not the Heisman Trophy, but it is my Heisman Trophy. To be inducted to the HOF is truly an honor but means even more to me to be the first inductee in 129 years of school existence.” During the April 18 Board of Trustees meeting, Eisenhower High School stu dents Warneisha Horn and Sara Anahi Mendoza Gonzalez were recognized for being selected to participate in the Mickey Leland Kibbutzim Internship program this summer. The program sends 10 high school juniors to Israel for a six-week work and travel experience. The founda tion’s board, composed of multicultural representatives and alumni, chose the participants. The majority of interns are either Asian, African American, Hispanic, or Caucasian, and they must meet a set of criteria that includes strong academics, leadership skills and external recommendations. Prior to the
At Nimitz, Bloodsaw displayed the talents that led him to being offered a scholarship to Texas College. He was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Cougars and in his senior season he led his team to the fourth round of the Class 6A playoffs, were they eventually fell to perennial state powerhouse Katy. After graduating from Texas College, Bloodsaw spent three years in secondary education. He joined Aldine ISD seven years ago and spent six years at his alma mater serving as Offensive Coordinator and as a business teacher. He joined Teague Middle School, led by Principal Gerald Schattle, at the start of the 2022 23 school year. Schattle has had an up-close view of Bloodsaw’s career, having coached him at Teague and Nimitz, and at Teague. He said he is extremely happy his former pupil. “Proud is an understatement,” Schattle said, when asked how he felt about Blood saw being inducted into the Texas College HOF. “I was blessed to see Mr. Bloodsaw on the field as a coach at Teague and Nimitz High School early in my teaching and coaching career. To serve with him students’ departure, they must attend a four-part seminar on Israel and the Middle East. During June, Warneisha and Sara will fly to Israel where they will experience life on a kibbutz and examine Israeli and Middle Eastern life. Activities include interacting with Israeli Arabs and Jews, working on archeological digs, touring the holy sites of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, visiting a youth village and spending one week residing in the home of an Israeli family. U. S. Congresswom an Sheila Jackson Lee called in from Washington, D.C. during the April 18 Board meeting to congratulate Warnei sha and Sara. at Teague has brought me great pride as well. His leadership and gifts were evident back at Nimitz and transferred to Texas College. Our students at Teague are able to witness Aldine excellence serving here at Teague.” Former Nimitz star quarterback X’Zavier Bloodsaw was recently inducted into the Texas College (Tyler) Hall of Fame.

OVER 500 ALDINE ISD ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN DAY OF DESIGN
The event was an opportunity for elementary, middle, and high school students to use knowledge, creativity, and collaboration to develop big ideas using the design thinking process for creative problem-solving.
Over 500 students from across the district walked through the doors of Ei senhower High School on Saturday, May 6, to participate in AISD’s Day of Design. Day of Design is an annual opportunity to recognize the value of design and
its capacity to effect change. Student designers were challenged to reflect deeply on the well-being of people within their local environments and to find innovative solutions to local needs by using design as a vehicle to honor diversity and transcend borders.
ALDINE NAMED TOP SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN TEXAS PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH FREE MEALS
Schools are also working to reduce the stigma surrounding receiving free school meals for children who need them. “School districts like Aldine are trying new things. For example, at a high school level, you’re seeing grab-and-go breakfast in between periods, where kids are grabbing breakfast tacos in the hall in-between classes,” said Sanborn. “At the elementary level, you might see breakfast delivered to the classroom.” Chief Operations Officer Fred Wash ington and Executive Director Susan D’Amico lead the Child Nutrition Ser vices Department. D’Amico, executive director of child nutrition services, stat ed that Aldine ISD serves after-school snacks at all elementary schools and suppers at all secondary campuses. She explained that the district can only do so if the campuses operate an educa tional program. There are “currently about 55 operating with tutorials or classes.” The Aldine Child Nutrition Services Department has earned the right to be described as “exemplary.” Last sum mer, the Texas Association for School Nutrition Department recognized the AISD Child Nutrition Services with the Lifetime Achievement Award for their practices. Staff members work hard to ensure students start every day with a nutritious breakfast, followed by an equally healthy and delicious lunch. This summer, Aldine Child Nutrition Services will again partner with the Tex as Department of Agriculture to provide students with healthy, no-cost summer meals so they are nourished over
The nonprofit organization, Children at Risk, recently released a new statewide ranking of school districts doing an ex cellent job of providing nutritious meals to students. Aldine ISD’s Child Nutrition Department placed first among districts with more than 50,000 students in the state. “So far this year, we’ve served 3,623,377 breakfasts and 6,620,513 lunches. And that doesn’t count all the other things,” said LaTonya Goffey, su perintendent of Aldine ISD. The district also supplies kids with after-school snacks and dinner options. “If a student is hungry, everything else becomes secondary,” said Gof fey. “Learning won’t happen, and our carefully crafted mission statements become meaningless.” In Texas, 56% of students qualify for free or reduced-cost lunches. In Aldine, 92% of its students are economically disadvantaged, with approximately 85% qualifying for free lunch. “We live in an area in the state of Texas where the majority of our children come from low-income households and pos sibly from a food-insecure family,” said Bob Sanborn, president, and CEO of Children at Risk. “These free breakfasts and lunches are part of the equation to ensure kids are successful.” Sanborn says each school district has the same potential for providing top-notch nutrition, and the ones that have seen the most success have proactively sought new options for getting food to kids.

the summer break and ready to return to school in the fall. The Aldine child nutrition team also focuses on wellness. It has taken the ini tiative to educate students about healthy eating by hosting elementary students in their garden to teach them about fruits and vegetables and how to cook healthy meals, led by our district chef. Goffney also thanked AISD partners at Children at Risk for serving alongside AISD as advocates for children to pro vide them with a better quality of life, beginning with nutrition.

I will continue to do my best to represent you and Aldine ISD in a first class manner. I want to say thank you to our School Board and Superintendent Dr. Goffney for their hard work and approval of the new stadium. W.W. We will continue to be proud of Thorne Stadium and the years it served our Aldine community. The new complex will be ready in 2024. I want to thank our neighbors in Spring ISD for making George Stadium available to us this football season so our varsity football teams have a stadium to compete in. I am looking forward to an exciting year of competition. All of the teams have worked hard during the offseason and are prepared for competition. We will approach this year focusing on our Three Stripe goals. Student Achievement: High percentage of scholarships. I want you to be involved with all the affiliated programs within Aldine ISD. flipped the culture in two short years. The Golden Eagles went 9-1 in 2022, winning district for the first time in over 16 years. “I grew up two streets over from here... 1360 Greens Parkway in a one bedroom apartment with my mom and sister,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to be back home and to give back to the community that really poured into me as a kid. I was molded by great teachers, coaches and counselors at Nimitz and now I want to give these kids that same opportunity.” The Falcons went 4-6 overall and 2-5 in district play in 2022. “Our expectation is to win the day,” he said. “We want to win in the classroom, the hallways and in the community. If you win in those facets, then the wins on the field will come naturally. “We are BOD! – Built on Discipline,” he said. “That’s where it starts and finishes. We are to be disciplined as a team and a family united as one. With both of those, everything falls into place.”

MACARTHUR HIGH BASEBALL COACH ERNEST GONZALES EARNS 400TH CAREER VICTORY
It all started with an 8-7 win over then Jeff Davis High School (now Northside High School) and 37 years later, MacAr thur High School head baseball coach Ernest Gonzales notched his 400th career victory with a 2-0 win over Cy Park on Feb. 24. Prior to a recent District 14-6A game against Westfield, the Aldine ISD Athletic Department recognized Gonzales’ ac complishment with a ceremony, attend ed by Aldine ISD Board Members Rose Avalos, Connie Esparza and Steve Mead, along with Director of Athletic Services Sandra Mader, MacArthur High Principal Shauna Showers, head football coach and campus athletic coordinator Wayne Craw ford and members of Gonzales’ family. Gonzales remembers his first win like it was yesterday. “Yes, it was my first year as Terry High School head coach. We defeated Jeff Davis, 8-7,” he said. “I still have the ball with all the player’s signatures.” Gonzales has 416 overall victories, with 405 coming at MacArthur, where he has served as the Generals head coach for the last 31 years. He admitted he didn’t think much about win No. 400 until his family made him realize it was a pretty big deal. “At first, I really didn’t believe it was of any significance until my wife, children,

especially my sons, and grandchildren were very excited about it,” he said. “We spoke about it around the dinner table and at every family gathering. They were full of joy and happiness. It made me realize the people that I had spent so much time away from all of these years because of coaching, were very happy and proud of me. I had several of my fellow coaches, athletic directors, administrators and school board mem bers congratulating me and telling me it was well deserved. It made me realize it was a major accomplishment and very significant.” Gonzales began his coaching career in 1980 in Spring Branch and moved to
Terry High School in 1986. In 1992, for mer Aldine Athletic Director Joe Young offered Gonzales the head coaching job at MacArthur and the rest is history. Gonzales is married to former Aldine ISD employee Louisa, his high school sweetheart. They have been married for 52 years and have three children, Kelli, Ernie and Eric (MacArthur Class of 1998). All are college graduates and each has a master’s degree. Ernie and Louisa also have four grandchildren, Julianne 13, Joseph 10, Harlow 10, and Oliva 8. Gonzales said he does not plan on slow ing down anytime soon.

Sarah’s mother, Samar Fatima, found the NSLI Y scholarship program for her, encouraging her to pursue her passion for traveling and learning about new cultures. “I owe every achievement and every stride in my academic career to my mom, as she has helped me seek out opportunities. She is my greatest inspi ration,” said Sarah. Sarah decided to pursue the NSLI Y pro gram to contribute her unique perspec tive and background since South Asians are often underrepresented in immer sion programs. “I want to better understand Korean culture and the language and gain a deeper understanding of day-to-day life in Korea,” said Sarah. Sarah will graduate as valedictorian of the Class of 2023 at Nimitz HS. After completing the Summer Korean Lan guage program, Sarah plans to attend at the District 14-6A District Track Meet held April 12-13 at DeKaney High School. Chavez finished in first place in the 800-meter run, the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run. His three first-place finishes accounted for 30 of the Generals’ 105 team points. Sarah will travel to Seoul, South Korea, this summer for this program. The U.S. Department of State’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth programs emphasize rapid language ac quisition in an immersion environment by combining in-class language instruc tion, a cultural program, and homestays. Students will receive approximately 20 hours of language instruction each week, totaling 120 hours. By the end of the program, participants will increase their language proficiency and gain a deeper understanding of the host coun try’s culture. Every year an estimated 3,000 appli cants from all over the US apply. From that, 600 are chosen as finalists.

Aldine ISD held its fourth annual Super intendent’s Top 10 Scholars Celebration on Thursday, May 11 at the M.O. Camp bell Educational Center. The event recognizes the Top 10 scholars at each of the district’s 10 high schools. The Top 10 students were treated to ice cream and received medals to signi fy their standing as the top academic achievers at their respective high schools. The students were also given the chance to share with the audience what college or university they will attend and what they will major in. This group of Aldine seniors have been accepted to John Hopkins, Harvard, Yale, the Uni versity of Michigan, Boston College, the University of Texas, Texas A&M Univer sity the University of Houston and many other prestigious institutions of higher learning. Chief of Staff Sheleah Reed delivered the welcome and congratulated the seniors for their hard work to reach Top 10 status in their respective classes. “This is truly a special event, and I am so excited that we can gather to cele brate the academic accomplishments of our outstanding scholars,” Reed said. Reed then introduced the key note speaker, Blanca Soto. Soto is a graduate of Aldine High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in environmental de sign from Texas A&M University and her Masters of Architecture from the Uni versity of Houston. She currently serves as a project manager at PBK Architects, a Houston-based firm specializing in designing educational facilities. She is also a licensed architect in the State of Texas. Soto shared with the students her story of her journey that took her to where she is today. She knew at the age of 12 that she wanted to be an architect. Soto challenged the Top 10 scholars to continue to work hard and take advan

tages of opportunities when they are presented to them. “There is no straight path toward success,” Soto said. “Everyone has their own path and their timeline. A&M was no easy walk in the park. I went to school with people way smarter than me, with people who had more cultural experience, with students who had gen erations of college graduates in their family. But that was ok. I just had to keep working hard and at the end of the day I graduated alongside these same students, some of who became friends.” Following Soto’s remarks, Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goff ney congratulated the Top 10 scholars as being some of Aldine’s “best and brightest students,” and shared with the scholars the importance of the medals they received. “The medal you are wearing now sym bolizes your hard work and dedication,” she said. “It reminds me of a quote that I go back to often that has served me well when I need a bit of motivation or just a push in the right direction: “Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do.”
She said she hoped the students will take that quote to heart as they ad vance in their academic careers, and also challenged the Top 10 scholars to make the most of their opportunities in college and beyond. “Make memories. Take advantage of ev ery opportunity to be involved, student government, choir, sports, set. Try it all! And finish. Live your best life and have fun. On behalf of myself, our Board of Trustees, and the administrative team, congratulations on a job well done.” To see a list of the Top 10 scholars from each Aldine ISD high school visit AldineISD.org.
