I am saddened to report the death of Carl F. Holtz, #4224, of Estero, FL, on February 6, 2022, at the age of 81. We climbed many of the 46 together and enjoyed treks in the ‘Dacks and the Catskills as well as the AT, the Long Trail, and the Northville Placid trail. Carl was a charter member of The Wild Geese, a hiking club, and made our epic hike of the 95-mile Dingle Way in SW Ireland. In 2017, we day hiked in Death Valley, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks— the last of our 49 outings. He was an expert map read er and navigator in the woods, and an inspired backcountry chef with a wicked sense of humor. He was also a talented musician and had an Oscar for technical film achievements. I am grateful to have been his friend. —Jim Coyne, #3815

Carl Holtz finishing his 46 on Gray Peak on 10-08-1997.

My brother Raymond Fortman, #5142, passed away unexpectedly on 7/14/22. He inspired me, Doug Fortman, #10659, and Jim Haynor, #10660, to take up hiking back in the 1970s. The three of us hiked many of the high peaks and experienced many hiking adventures together over the years. After Ray completed his 46, he moved to Texas with his wife and didn't do much hiking after that. How ever, Jim and I vowed to complete our 46 together. We have enjoyed a love of nature and hiking adventures all our lives and we have my brother Ray to thank for that. —Doug Fortman #10659

My husband, Friedel Schunk, #1468, passed away on November 30, 2022. He was 85 years old. His backpack reminds me of his many outings and his knowledge of the Adirondacks, and the Northeastern Mountains. —Helke Schunk, Germany
